Nice build! Not only does the 540XL stay nice and cool, it also has tons more torque. Years ago before the 540XL came into existence, I swapped an MMX and a 2650kv into my Stampede 4x4. On 3S that thing was ballistic, it could hit 55mph with ease, and the motor stayed nice and cool without a heatsink or fan. I never felt the need to run 4S but I knew 70mph was in easy reach hehe. But it was overkill for the Stampede.
Great update to that truck to give it the R mode! The wheels and tires and body nice but the lights made it awesome a little more fine tuning sweet ride!🤔😉👍📹💯✔️👋👋👋
For the over heating issue all you needed to do was add the ESC cooling fan and a heatsink for the motor. Would cost about $35. FYI the Hoss and the Raptor both use the same ESC the only difference is the Hoss includes the fan. This thing is plenty fast on the stock electronics but hey it's your truck.

Awesome video guys! ❤ Has made me buy a Ford body for my Slash and some road tyres, going to change it to a street basher this weekend (if body arrives). You made a gorgeous car, and made me jealous 😂❤❤
I believe the reason you don’t see a big difference between the stock motor, esc and the Hoss motor, esc is you’re using the same lipo battery. The difference in motors is how they handle the power given to it. The VXL 3s is built to have max power on a 3s lipo while the Hoss setup is built to deliver its max power on 4s lipo and the Hoss setup might turn the same or little less rpm’s as the VXL 3s it makes a lot more torque which means it can handle a taller gear and not overheat.
Based on the way that cross pin bent, I don’t think speed had anything to do with it. I’ve ran mine at similar speeds. What most likely happened was the pin was missing its e clip long before the failure.
Should the shock shaft rebound all the way out? In theory should it not stay exactly where you leave it, after all the oil is just a resistance, my understanding is the shaft should only rebound out about 1/4 of the way which is caused by the air bubble inside of the rubber bladder in the top of the shock pushing it out slightly, I could be wrong I'm happy to learn. 👍
That kinda makes sense, articulation for crawlers and the need for the wheels to be in contact with the surface as much as possible when bashing, every day's a school day 👍
The 540xl is a 2400kv motor where the standard vxl motor is 3500kv. You're losing about 30% of your rpm, which is why on the same/similar gearing it was much slower. The double bullet connector/adapters aren't helping any either.
I called traxxas because I had the same issue with the app and they said because of the newest smartphone update the app isn't working properly. They will have to come out with an update for the app
The 540XL is a 2400kv motor, vs the VXL-3S motor which is 3500kv. GEAR IT UP. I'm running the Maxx power system in my truck,. and an 18 tooth pinion. It's ridiculously fast on 4s, and just fast on 3s.

If you want power, don't buy traxxas electronics, they're pretty weak. Throw in a castle 5700kv 540, then gear it down a bit to limit it to 50-60ish. This will give you way more torque and acceleration off the line. For a 5700kv you will want a heatsink with a cooling fan though, but it's worth it. Also get a high volt 3s lipo, rated at 11.4v. Gives a little more punch and wheel speed without being too much for 3s rated motors. Also traxxas drag slicks are honestly pretty bad, way too stiff and horrible traction. Proline super soft drag slicks give easily double the grip. Once you got the vehicle set up for high torque, you'll want that traction or you'll just spin out of control.
@@3X7Outdoor no I still have them on my raptor if they do break imma go with XO-1 axles. I thought they would break after I hit about 80mph they still holding up. Tough lil truck
So based on this, I’m guessing your guys aren’t familiar with what KV means? Simply put, with motors it means RPM/Volt. Why? No clue. But that’s what it means. So of course the 540xl improperly geared wouldn’t match the stock motor. The reason the hoss can reach the speeds it can with a 14T pinion is because of the tires. They play a huge role in determining what gearing needs to be ran. Bigger tires are the same as a bigger pinion. To appropriately compensate for the kv you’d need a 19t, so 18t was pretty close.
Would not of chosen traxxas motor or electronics to replace it with that's for sure. And please save the word "Insane" for the yougoober algorithm chasers.
@@3X7Outdoor for one, the reason your shock rebounds when you depress it in without a spring is because it’s full of air. Every shock I’ve ever built and watched being built, you’ve got to bleed the air out. Loosen the cap just past the oring or if it’s got a bleeder screw, use that, but you have to depress the shaft all the way in. Bleed out the air and any excess oil. While holding the shaft in, tighten the cap down. If it wont tighten all the way down, it’s still got too much oil and or air. It may take a few times doing this. But you’ve got to bleed the air out. No shock should rebound like that especially if there isn’t a spring on it. When you’ve got it set up perfectly, you should be able to depress the shaft all the way into the shock body, that’s called a “dead shock” and that’s exactly what you’re looking for. The springs are what gives you your rebound, not the air trapped inside the body. Oil weights and pistons are what give you your dampening. All that air in a shock will blow it seals. It’s sad that a traxxas rep told you that’s how you set up a shock. Bad information.
Your problem is the electronics is the problem. Traxxas electronics are trash. Put your a hobbywing max8 combo in there and it’ll move like nothin you’ve drove before
