Ja. Level Rachmaninov.
      Danke, danke, danke.

This is so far ahead of any other performance. Right from the first phrase, Sokolov shines. Romantic music is where Sokolov is truly himself. I’ve never heard another pianist able to play Brahms so beautiful, not to mention the incredible etude encore. Casually performs the op 25 no 12 etude in the most passionate and sonorous way. Bravo.

Thank you so much for posting this! I have been looking for just such an interpretation of this masterpiece! The remarkable thing about this piece (at least to me) is that Brahms seems to have worked a very delicate balance of the tempo (especially in the solo sections of the first movement). And the pianist needs to be cognizant of that. If he/she plays too fast where he/she needs to be playing slow, they will almost certainly run out of steam later on. Grigori Sokolov is the first pianist that I’ve seen who appears to have recognized this balance. The result speaks for itself……❤❤👏👏

Every time I listen to Sokolov play this great Brahms creation, I am feeling and sensing Ludvig Van Beethoven playing it himself. Astounding! IS sokolov channeling Beethoven, or is Beethovens spirit right next to Sokolov and inspiring Sokolov with his ( Beethovens ) divine musical mind ?
Sokolov is a musical PHENOMENON. Artists of his caliber come into physical manifestation only every 130 -200 years and leave humanity a legacy that ennobles ALL humans tenfold.

Few pianists REALLY do the right hand solo thirds from the last movement convincingly. MAH, Zimmerman, Pollini arguably, and that's probably it, with Hamelin with the cleanest runs, as far as I can tell. But with Sokolov we get all the thirds with art. Nothing mechanical.

How does he get that striking but soft crystalline effect at 23:25? Una corda perhaps? Love the bigger than life expression and the creative tension between orch. and solo.

For many years I have regarded the performace of this concerto by Emil Gilels and Fritz Reiner (Chicago Sym) as definitive Now there are two definitive perfromamces: Sokolov and Gilels.

Mr Sokolov is a marvellous pianist. Perhaps it’s my hearing, but the large orchestral forces sometimes obscure the piano’s sound. I prefer the Brahms concertos with a smaller orchestra and more transparency. Just a thought. And probably my ears.
