    I am in awe of you both! Also I’m in the process of watching your videos to catch up and learn your story from the beginning. It made me so happy when you stated you would be selectively clearing your yard. Who knows what perennials, bushes, and trees are waiting to be discovered. I find it sad when new owners totally clear their yards without realizing or caring what is already growing there which could be beautifully incorporated into their plans.

    • @CicadaAndCo
      @CicadaAndCo  4 месяца назад +2

      Hi! Welcome to our channel, we hope you enjoy catching up on our story! 😊 We completely agree about the yard. We’ve seen so many houses in our town with mature plants get completely clear-cut when new owners move in, and we love creating a space for pollinators and native plants for a number of reasons. Not to mention, SHADE is so valuable in Florida! Our yard feels a few degrees cooler when walking through our gates, like a shaded park. We usually post a new video every Sunday evening, so more soon! 😊

    Got excited when I saw a new video, love you guys and this house. Hope you saved the kitchen sink - it's pretty cool - would make a good sink for an outside kitchen area or planting station area.
    Finding that hidden ship lap is pretty awesome - glad you mentioned leaving it and working around it. The same with the built in cupboard above the ship lap, that could work in the design as well. Very nice that you found the original cabinet doors for those cupboards - score! Like to see as much original features left in the house that you can.

    I have been binge watching the last few days and have to say you two have taken on a huge task, but I think if anyone can bring this house back to life and make it into an amazing home, it's you. I love the fact that you are going to try to keep and restore the original built-in in the kitchen and are trying to preserve the true style and beauty of the house. I have seen way too many people get into historical homes and gut them to the point where they lose all their original charm and historical characteristics and end up looking like uber modern, cookie cutter homes you could find in any newly constructed subdivision. It looks to me like you both understand the value and the importance of being able to renovate and update your home to include all the modern conveniences while maintaining the true historical nature and appearance of the building. It's not going to be easy, as we have seen so far, and it's not going to be cheap, but in the end, you will have a gorgeous home that you can be proud of. Also you get huge bonus points for not gutting the landscape of the property to throw down a lawn or a pool and instead try to clear enough to have the space you need for outdoor living while keeping a natural, safe environment for the pollinating insects and other wildlife. Well, maybe no rats or venomous snakes!!

      @@CicadaAndCo I can't wait to see the final results. I know I have a long time to wait before it gets to that point, but I am definitely going to enjoy watching the entire process. We had an old historical home near where I used to live that was owned by a hoarder. The roof was caving in, the upstairs wall was starting to go. No one had seen the front door for at least a decade due to the overgrowth. It was packed floor to ceiling with trash and we really expected that it would not be able to be salvaged. But once he agreed to let the house go, the historical preservation society, along with some amazing contractors and a new owner gutted the entire place and managed the miracle of bringing it back to it's former glory. To see it now, a year or so after the renovations were completed, you wouldn't even believe it was the same house! I expect that the two of you and the contractor you hired are going to be able to do the same with Casa Marie and I am so happy I found your channel so that I can follow your progress and see your dream for the house and property become a reality.

    Built ins! How exciting. So there were at three era of kitchen? Original white + red/ white plaid wallpaper, then 50's aqua, and the white? I'm curious about that boxy area to the left? Of the built-in, where the shiplap wrapped around to. Is there a built-in / shelving on the not-kitchen (dinning?) area? Can you, (did you) take out the other three walls of the boxy area? I am really looking foward to what y'all came up with for the kitchen.

      That space to the left of the kitchen built-in is a built-in in the small powder room. We’re thinking if flipping if so that it become a cabinet in the kitchen since we have very little kitchen cabinet space.

    I have a Florida home from the same era and when we did our renovation we found a few walls like the one you found. It's not bead board, it's 1 x 6 solid wood that is placed horizontally from floor to ceiling. It's crazy hard to remove but decade it's solid as a rock. My guess is that they used this technique when they needed walls to be super strong like in a kitchen or bathroom to support cabinets. our was n our master bath and we just put water poof wallboard over th top of it. It would be cool to trip it down and strain it or white wash. We also bought our front door and some odds and ends from Florida Victorian in DeLand. Our front for was a 70's ugly door but we replaced it wait a solid oak door with alligatoring paint and it fits the house perfectly.. Best of luck moving forward, these old homes are great but a never ending project even after your renovation is complete..

    The deeper you go the more you find which leads to a Delmar, what do you keep with out impacting on what you want. Hard call to make. I like the idea of building out and up as some of the wood looks a bit on the dodgy side, if you do add an extension will you keep it in the theme of the rest of the house or go modern. By the way I do admire your enthusiasm for this time consuming work. Looking forward to your next post, sorry I mist you on Sunday's premier as I was looking at the inside of my eyelids 😅 keep up the good work Gary 🇬🇧🇬🇧
