This makes me want to make a plugin for these runs; something that automatically counts melons collected, turns off hoppers on day 100, etc. Also, combining it with performance mods, like Optifine or Sodium/Lithium, as performance is, evidently, a big issue. I doubt I have the time to dedicate to learning Minecraft plugin coding for Watermelon%, considering I'm a high-school senior, but I've made far worse time management decisions, like writing this comment *about* melon farming.

Obviously the rails might be an issue for that but as long as most of the machine can move up with needing manual collection/ fixing. That might take more materials and is worse if the extra mats needed are limited by the rates of the slime and iron farms. This should help save time towards building that 4th layer. 2) This is definitely more draining sanity wise, but the losses to the farm breaking are very bad so making extra sure they are being checked as often is possible seems necessary. If by day 69/70 everything is built that "only" 10 hours of routine checking and maintenance to do. This is all a very delicate balance of passion and sanity and speed, so do whats best for you and your goals. You have a good team/ fanbase behind you supporting this honestly very difficult goal. Even though its in Minecraft and a game and melons, this is a legitimately difficult engineering task. Some numbers are just that big. I'm sure you can get there.

This is 100% every thing Minecraft is about man, doing wild projects learning the ins and outs of mechanics to create insane videos… you’ll make the 10 mil!!! Seriously your content is always some of my favorite to watch without a doubt
hey just a few thoughts on how to further min/max with farms - some may or may not suit your personal rules for the challenge - but the two most important aspects seem to be resource grind / farm construction -> resources to start building auto farms at scale. and then being able to build at scale repeatably and reliably. CONSTANT BOTTLENECKS: the storage placement grind takes an insane amount of time - its also prone to clogs/failure/ overflow - you being a manual hopper often for large chunks of time.... and in the last video you noted farms running slower due to lag; which the silly large amount of hoppers you're using are perhaps the biggest contributors to... likely followed by the near 10K double chests. that time to craft and build that and lag it generates is killer... HOW TO SOLVE A BUNCH OF THIS (IMO): 1. in your current routing it when you first loot the end - just block up the bottom door of the closest end city to your gateway to save the two shulkers , take the time to bridge there from the gateway - just take the 2 seconds to mine a few stacks of netherrack at some point in the nether - nothing to destroy it in the end and endstone or wood/ stone take to long - and not pearl for future prep) first gateway - proceed as normal; noting coords 2. as soon as you have slime, wood, and iron farms up - you can either craft (or dupe - vanilla mechanic same as TNT) rail - and build ianxofour's shulker farm in the overworld near spawn if possible. it's reliable; generates shells fast , is easy to refill if it breaks, and after you've built it 2-3 times it's mindless and super quick. once built - collect the two shulkers you saved from earlier after railing your bridges from earlier using a furnace minecart to push it thru gateways... 3. Ian uses glass for the layers - which - before building the shulker farm - if not opposed... go back to your end portal - red mushrooms are ez as you have already found dark oak - and you have the rest of the minimal build - make an end portal gravity block duper - they take 1-2 minecraft days to build and even the basic ones are insane in items per hour. dupe sand on one side (3 blocks), and gravel on the other 3 ((9 blocks) more later). 4. smelt the sand into glass while you mine down like the 9? ish stack of obi for the shulker farm portals while you basically AFK the duper on the end side - the overworld is loaded via super simple chunk loader. 5. Shulker farms are insanely productive. the wood would still be the potential bottleneck. Each double chest of shulker shells is 1728 shulker boxes when combined with (18 stacks logs = 9 stacks chests, so 36 is the 18 stacks to convert to to shulker boxes - not bad). 6. this seems like way more work... but when building a module a shulker box loader is 10000x faster (like... 60-90 seconds each)to make than your chest/ hopper walls & far more dependable as each is a copy of the previous module - speeds up the farm, saves lag, saves time placing blocks, reduces iron cost - making peaceful viable in the latter 3rd potentially. unless planned and pathed obsessively - may add time up front / first 1/3rd? not much.... *SUPRISE TWIST* : ....but that's why i mentioned that the end portal duper is easy and quick to make and use gravel on 9/12 blocks.... how long does your dirt grind take right now - because the gravel produced from the end portal that you can load into your free shulkers at that point takes it from hypothetically 60k blocks to 30 k blocks - that's *days* and huge iMO - just mine half your current dirt - then use it with gravel to mass craft coarse dirt - then place the coarse dirt as the fields- when turned into farmland with a hoe - it becomes actual farmland - if you mine it you get dirt - not course dirt back.... shulker loaders and cut your dirt grind in half + way more repeatable and reliable... grind in have and you're over 10m EZ- the sheer amount of lag that could eliminate...also way way way less manual labor and more time to monitor and fix small issues before they become big issues IMO you could hit 15m cheers man - want to see you beat this!
I'm not sure if the shulker farm approach works. Ianxofour says his farm makes ~250/hour. Storing 10 million needs 6000 boxes or 12,000 shells so you would have to run the farm for 48 hours or 150 minecraft days. Oops. You would need two or likely even three of them. But then you are mining obsidian for an hour. You also need to build all the extra farms and time to craft the boxes (and build tens of shulker box loaders, we have ~200 melons/s). 10 million is 3000 double chests, placing them and the hoppers takes maybe 3 hours? Not that much time to work with. He could build the farming layers first and then place most of the storage chests later while the farms are running. From watching the video, the dirt placement looks awkward. I wonder if series of 12 wide block fillers would be faster. Should be fewer blocks to place in total.
@@whocares2277 ...so I read this and didn't forget about it and actually took the time test it... You're correct as to the claimed yield of the farm. I've made some minor tweaks on both the overworld and nether side, also I use the piston/wither rose kill method "upgrade" - unsure if that contributes, and the ez refill portal above the farm that restocks the farm if ever needed, which, just saves on downtime tho rare...but after a few AFK sessions to test... I find i average 350ish - 500 per hour (turning down simulation distance === more; diminishing returns after all the nearby farms are unloaded (built over river in spawn chunks; main base complex is huge & full of farms & partially loaded in my usual 18 chunk simulation distance . What's helps the most (maybe?) is the huge portals spawn tons of zombie piglins & since I'm above a river so the snow golems don't melt - covered the bottom sides of the portals with trap doors & put some turtle eggs on trapdoors as well, so they fall into the water, which I dug out to y=0, made source blocks w/kelp, and replaced the floor with magma blocks, which pull them down till they despawn. Pretty sure I don't lose any shulker spawns to the trapdoors on the portal frames & AFK at a height where the player bubble is spawnproofed. Regardless. Sorry for the essay. My point - you're right that even my "improved" version is far too slow... And rek is dealing with slices not whole melons... So it's more like 10k double chests iirc. There are however almost as quick and easy to build farms that give like 2.5k + shells per hour which can be built with minimal resources... That would suffice for the run. A simple TNT sapling/bone meal tree farm could produce all the wood needed in a fraction of the time of chopping, and with an elytra a half hour in the nether soul sand valleys once could fill enough shulkers with bone blocks to supply the farm for the whole run... I kinda really still think shulker loaders and reducing grind are the key... If those things are in place it just comes down to block placement speed.... Which, rek seems to spend a lot of time practicing. Again sorry for the essay. I find the challenge interesting
@@whocares2277 okay last thing .. again I find this interesting lol I'm so sorry... Taking the time to build a wood farm and shulker farm and using shulkers to store melons is... 1.21 will be for Melon runs what 1.16.1 was for SSG/speed running in general. Autocrafters completely change the run. I mean . Storing whole melons only takes 1/9th the space, and the redstone to supply a loader with shulker boxes crafted on demand from a chest of logs and shells.... The golden age of melon speed runs is coming lol

The grind is impressive, and congrats on the PB. I still think you can reach 10 million. Obviously you made some mistakes in this run but I think that's really not what's important. This challenge is about exponential growth, and what matters with exponential growth is to get started as early as possible. You need to find a way to get the melon harvesting to start earlier. And for example, maybe you can get away with smaller/less farms early on, and then you add/expand your farms later on while some melons are already getting harvested. Another thing, maybe build more layers but smaller ones, to have less issues with render distance, lag, ghost blocks and so on, I dunno if that's an actual fix but expanding vertically instead of horizontally might be worth exploring.
I think the strategy he has right now is actually better. The growth is actually square, not exponential. The tempo the farm can grow at is capped by how fast a single person can expand it, not by how fast it can supply itself with seeds. Horizontal setup requires less infrastructure and is easier to build, so it will be actually easier to start earlier. Any bootstrap setup that you'd want to have in the meantime would have to be compromised on some aspect. If that aspect is automation, you have to manually harvest once in a while, but that'll slow down the other work, and every additional second of work of the big one is worth more than a second of work of the bootstrap one. If it's compromised on size, not automation, you still have to get the redstone, minecarts, chests, slime blocks, hoppers to build it. If you harvest them manually, this will be just too much of a waste of time (especially the slime balls), if automatically - you may as well build the main farm. The one optimization I maybe see is building the first layer manually with the first strip end-to-end working, and then the rest, so that you can populate it with melons right away. But for the rest the supply of seed will quickly outgrow your building abilities.
any sub -optimal farms that aren't the final optimized end game modules would be wasted time - it would always be a better use of time to grind the resources to build the optimal farms that scale in ways that support the "in theory" math. they'll never produce enough to matter end game & the most important time to hit in this challenge is being ahead of building the optimal farms ahead of what the "in theory" spreadsheets say are required to hit the target... the real world rarely goes perfect... being ahead gives a cushion to deal with those things.
16:11 the reason the villager fell of was because he was path finding to the left bed instead of the right one, also i think netherack doesn't count as a full block so when he was pathfinding he fell of because he thought the block was a full one, (mobs will fall of blocks like cloosed trapdoors because they think there full blocks)
You should do a integer melon limit speedrun at one point. No specific amount of days, just try to be as fast as possible. I don't think it would even take THAT long, considering the farm is kinda exponential in a way
it is absolutely not exponential in any way, it is at best quadratic growth, but he is already hitting tps and chunk loading limits, so realistically it's pretty grim, would take months of unbelievably tedious work
If your playing on 1.21 then you can use the oozeing potion and a simple mob/animal farm to farm slimes way more efficiently. PhoenixSC just made a video explaining it
I love seeing your content because you mix crazy ideas with the actual ability to pull them off because you're a speedrunner and so you know more and can do more than most.
So I know this would take time and so it may not actually help the melon production, but it wouldn't lose much time if you happen to come across a pillager outpost or woodland mansion I think. would it be at all useful to get allays, split a few, and then give them watermelons to pick up any that fall on or beneath the farm like you showed at 37:30? You'd need to set up jukeboxes down below the farm with hoppers and such to get the watermelons. and perhaps if you have the iron for it, a minecart and rails to carry you around the farm so the allays pick up the watermelons that are on the layer itself. And then probably you'd need to occasionally come off afk and place the watermelons in a chest so your inventory doesn't get filled up (that you maybe set the ctrl and q buttons to something else and hold them down while facing a hopper) Idk how effective this would actually be unfortunately (and I also don't know if somehow the allays would cause lag, since that was definitely a problem while you were building and we wouldn't want to make that worse), but it could help if you happen to come across allays while you're building and mining in the first 20 days, and it might be at least worth testing?
You are my favorite minecraft youtuber. I am so glad you redid the Mellon challange. I would like to see you try to beat mine craft 100 times in the same world. Or even 50 times in under two days.
Hey rekrap, good video but i think you can make two blocks of dirt and then two blocks of melon stalks next to each other then modify the harvister because sometimes melons cant grow because there is already a melon there from a different plant.

*SUPRISE TWIST* : ....but that's why i mentioned that the end portal duper is easy and quick to make and use gravel on 9/12 blocks.... how long does your dirt grind take right now - because the gravel produced from the end portal that you can load into your free shulkers at that point takes it from hypothetically 60k blocks to 30 k blocks - that's *days* and huge iMO - just mine half your current dirt - then use it with gravel to mass craft coarse dirt - then place the coarse dirt as the fields- when turned into farmland with a hoe - it becomes actual farmland - if you mine it you get dirt - not course dirt back....
shulker loaders and cut your dirt grind in half + way more repeatable and reliable... grind in have and you're over 10m EZ- the sheer amount of lag that could eliminate...also way way way less manual labor and more time to monitor and fix small issues before they become big issues
IMO you could hit 15m
cheers man - want to see you beat this!
Should be fewer blocks to place in total.
bump
@@phishphan49 Still not sure about the shulker farm, but crafting the slices to melons is game-changing.

Another banger of a video that you would never see from any other RUclipsr. Good shit mr.rap
Ive never seen a more depressed reaction to a new pb
16:11 the reason the villager fell of was because he was path finding to the left bed instead of the right one, also i think netherack doesn't count as a full block so when he was pathfinding he fell of because he thought the block was a full one, (mobs will fall of blocks like cloosed trapdoors because they think there full blocks)
Also ghost blocks are caused by server lag

You know it’s a good day when Rekrap uploads!!!

20:40 When Rek just left the diamonds within reach alone, it made me cringe inside.
And then probably you'd need to occasionally come off afk and place the watermelons in a chest so your inventory doesn't get filled up (that you maybe set the ctrl and q buttons to something else and hold them down while facing a hopper)
Idk how effective this would actually be unfortunately (and I also don't know if somehow the allays would cause lag, since that was definitely a problem while you were building and we wouldn't want to make that worse), but it could help if you happen to come across allays while you're building and mining in the first 20 days, and it might be at least worth testing?
I had to watch rekrap make the waterlogging in 0.25, and still had to watch twice!!! This guy puts in soo much effort. deserves the sub.
