Matosinhos is a great area! That entire area north of Foz do Douro is amazing. I’m a US expat. After living in Lisbon for more than a year and paying around 1500 Euro a month the Algarve was waiting for me so I was happy to leave, get close to an amazing beach and cut my rent by more than half. I think Lisbon is a nice city and I’ll be happy to visit, but there is some crime especially in the outlying areas. Porto in terms of safety is definitely better. Also cool that your SEF appointment went well! I always have a good experience with them, and am coming up on my first two full years of residency. I’ve been curious about moving to Asia but at this point I have things so good here I guess I’ll just wait and see what comes. Good luck to you guys!

Living in Portugal is fairly inexpensive as the video said. If you’re looking for a cool place to just hang out, Selina in Porto usually always has nice music and Caparinhas during the summer. Of course Porto has the best food. Good luck getting through this lockdown.

I'm curious: Do either of you speak the language? Do you have Portugese friends? How easy or difficult is it to meet Portugese vs expats? How long does it take to become good friends with local Portugese at the level that you would be invited to their home for a meal for example?

    • @ExpatsEverywhere
      @ExpatsEverywhere  3 года назад +9

Not sure how David's Portuguese is. Kalie and I are learning Portuguese now. I came with a decent understanding of Brazilian Portuguese pronunciation so I'm having to relearn that to speak more European. Yes, we have Portuguese friends. I would hope they would invite us to their house for a meal 🥘 😁 The major issue right now with all of this is covid. It's made meet ups and such incredibly difficult. In terms of meeting Portuguese vs expats, that depends on a couple of things, one is age, another is personal interests, and a third would be how outgoing you are. If you really want to make friends with the Portuguese and you focus on going to group meet ups or things where locals are, you won't have any problem. If you just stick to expat bubble things, you'll limit yourself to expats. Does that help? - Josh & Kalie

Although limited to 1 or 2 brands (and unless we aren't really talking about the same product) I have found corn tortillas easily in a Continente store. You may take a look at their online store and search for "tortilha de milho". Also, you can buy authentic american goods from 'Glood' or 'Liberty American Store' - both brands have physical and online stores. The less savoury part will be the shipping costs, of course, but maybe still worth it to topple that feeling of "saudade" from the things you miss most. Take care & stay safe! :)

So would a monthly pension of around 3,900 Euros/month work well in a place like Aviero?
I think it will, based on the numbers I crunched at Numbeo, but someone living in Portugal would have a more "hands-on" understanding.
    ---
Also, I've been working with a Portuguese immigration attorney to start my process to move to Portugal. I wanted to nail down some tax issues before I made any final decision. The lawyer spent some time with Portuguese tax experts to answer my questions... and I just got a response today about it.
It turns out that government-service pensions are not taxable under the terms of the US-Portugal DTA (Double Taxation Agreement). In other words, a pension earned from working for the federal, state, or local government can only be taxed by the country issuing it (ie: the United States). And that includes military retirement pay and any Veterans Administration disability payments.
That said, it doesn't cover civil pensions like Social Security. That *is* taxable by the Portuguese government.

I did not know they have one of the top health care systems in the world. Is there any article or video on this topic? I wonder if doctors and nurses speak English even in the rural side? For someone with health issue it may be better to live near to leading hospitals or international airports right? :P I heard stories how the ambulance never arrive and the person on the phone didn't speak English and didn't understand the not so good Portuguese :(
Which bank would you recommend that speaks English, can do multi currencies and well connected to major Asian and American cities? I am using Citibank which awesome but they don't run retail banking in Portugal.
Two years ago i was visiting Cascais and visited a bank that is very popular, trying to find information on what will be needed to open a bank account. The lady who greeted me asked me to wait and she would bring someone who speak English. I asked several others and told to be patient and wait, i waited for almost 2 hours, while some ladies were chatting and laughing, there was only one or two customers when i was waiting, they were not busy... and i just want information to prepare things. I dont understand.. I imagine things will be more normal with international banks?

@@ExpatsEverywhere Thanks for the video. Useful info.
Could that €1000/month enough to cover rent of an unfurnished studio (T0), food, utilities (electricity, water, garbage, and internet), and transports but excluding entertainment in Lisboa or Porto or their suburbs?
Also, can I live comfortable with that budget to live in Madeiras or in one of the Azores islands? From some of the RUclips channels I’ve seen so far, I’m kind of like to live in Horta in Faial Island.

@@as-1982 Yes, we've interviewed an expat that'll come out in a few weeks and he says €1,000/month if you're not living in Lisbon or Porto. Housing a decent apartment in this cities just eats up so much of ones budget.
As far as the islands go, it'll come down to housing more than anything, but it's doable. It just depends on your expectations for the kind of lifestyle you want to live. - Josh & Kalie

If this can help , i make 665 euros per month (minimum wage in Portugal) + my mom makes 300 euros monthly , so we living basically on 1k euros monthly, currently we pay 515 euros for an T2(2 bedrooms) , this without counting all the Bills and etc, at the end of the month the money is gone , since you looking for 3 people , you wont find Rents for less than 650 euros for 3 people

Great interview with David! We are wanting to move to Portugal as soon as the travel restrictions lift! I'm a burned-out American Nurse & my partner of 14 years is a legal alien, here in the US. He is originally from Germany and kept his citizenship. Is the Golden Visa program still a viable option for me? My Beloved says that we can always marry! I know it sounds silly, but after all this time it feels Unromantic to marry out of necessity!!!

There is another vlogger I follow which could not only answer your questions about the Setúbal area, but also give a slightly different perspective about the expat life, since she is of Portuguese descent. @Expats Everywhere, you could try a convo as a mutual interview for both your channels - just search for Lisbon Diaries and get in touch with Liz. She has great stuff regarding her experience here, both on RUclips and IG. Stay safe!

I lost everything in the dotcom stock market crash. ($$$Million dollar portfolio). I'm a minimalist, would be looking for a studio in a smaller beach type town that's progressive and health oriented. Maybe Fall of 2022. I'm in Tucson AZ now and just signed a lease on a studio apt here. Thanks! Bruce
