I'm so happy to see this. I was there. It was my father Judd Woldin's idea to make Raisin in the Sun into a musical and he wrote the music with Bob Brittany who wrote the lyrics.
I just directed a production n Memphis in 2018. I saw it in 1973 when i was about the same age as Ralph Carter. The show was and is still indelible in my heart. Your Dad… well❤❤❤.
My God this is the 1st Tony's Award I ever saw. I was in 10th grade and decided at that moment, I liked musicals. I had to have this song. I went out and bought the album. It changed my life. Thank you for posting. I went to Drama School and moved to NYC because of this clip. Still here and loving it! Thank you!
I had the absolute pleasure of seeing this on Broadway. Aside from Ralph Carter and Virginia Capers, it starred Joe Morton, Ernestine Jackson and Debbie Allen. I was mesmerized by the story, the music and the performances; I didn't know the original play then and certainly understand now where this musical got its power. Thanks for posting this clip. Lovely to see Esther Rolle who would've made a great Ruth Younger!
The title of Virginia's song is "Whole Lotta SUNLIGHT". I stood backstage many, many times listening to her sing that song in this show. I was a teenager and never got tired of hearing it, although I preferred "He Come Down This Morning", the song she sang at the beginning of Act 2,
I cannot thank you enough for this posting, I saw this on Broadway when i was a young boy and Mrs Capers performance was one that always remained close to my heart; a truly moving moment. I was lucky enough to see it a few times. Joe Morton, Ernestine Jackson and Debbie Allen who also won a TONY ( she was great!!! too). There must be some legal thing with the rights because this musical is long over due for a revival. (Diane Paulus Hint Hint!)
I adore this song! We sung it in school when i was growing up. I had no idea that little Michael Evans-(Good Times) Ralph Carter had such an amazing and lyrical voice! Thanks for posting this!
I remember watching this when it originally aired and saying to myself.......wow, dude from Good times can sing!! I also remember Debbie Allen appeared in Raisin, I think it was her first major role.
Raisin is a glorious musical! Moving, inspiring, entertaining and ready for Broadway! You can catch the 2017 revival at Astoria Performing Arts Center.
I was in this show in the 80's a powerful piece of musical theatre. So many stars that we know today. And believe this show was deserving of the Tony as well as Seasaw. Seasaw was explosive. I couldn't have chosen just one.
I am so happy you posted this because I have always heard about this musical but never herad any songs from it.I heard that Nell Carter was going to do this musical before she passed away.
Thank you much for sharing this! Love it! Ralph is so talented. Never saw the show live but listened to the music. There were other great songs and singers on the album. Your youtube channel is awesome!
Musik is so universal. I'm hearing "Waltz For Koop" by Koop at 3:33. Now speaking of Ralph Carter, he was quite a talent, much of which was unrecognized.
Looks like in the last few seconds of Ralph's song, start watching at 3:13, a movable floor begins to pull Ralph offstage. Look carefully, he's moving faster than he is walking. Wonder why that was necessary?
Yes, Ralph Carter should've won the Tony. The child that replaced him on when Raisin went on the road was named "Darren"... can't remember the last name, but he wasn't nearly as good as Ralph Carter.
Think Ralph would've been A bigger star if they didn't let the white writers take over the Good Times show and turn Michael into A corny black teen instead of an educated revolutionary teen where he had everyone's attention!
What is the deal with Broadway sleeping on amazing opportunities to revive underrated productions with a minority cast? Didn't this win Best Musical? Why hasn't it been revived? Any musical with a minority cast is usually better than 90% of what is out there. Ain't Misbehavin', The Color Purple, Once On This Island, Caroline or Change Purlie, Dreamgirls...even Smokey Joe's Cafe was incredible because of the POC representation. I want to see more! I know some have been revived through Encores or limited engagements...but it's not enough. I'm so happy I'll be seeing A Strange Loop on Broadway after seeing it at Playwright's Horizons.
yeah Raisin needs a revival in the 21st century, shockingly Purlie hasn't gotten a revival in almost 50 years, (though the play Purlie Victorious is playing on Broadway as of this posting)
Never will understand how he didn't become a bigger star. Such an amazing talent PLUS good looks and humor.
I wonder if being so short held him back in his adult career.
How can you not love Ralph Carter? What a natural!
RIP Esther Rolle and Virginia Capers

I am so glad that your father had such a brilliant idea!

I swear Virginia Capers had a smile that could light up a stage!
Yes indeed
Why isn't this musical not performed more? Love it love it love it!
Right! I still don't know why ENCORES in NYC have NEVER done a concert version or anything.

AMAN : ESTHER ROLLE DID PLAY AS MAMA YOUNGER ON CHANNEL 13 TV WHEN "A RAISIN IN THE SUN" STARRED ESTHER ROLLE AND DANNY GLOVER WAY BACK IN THE DAYS
Black play at it best

Debbie Allen didn't won a Tony for Raisin but Ralph Carter was nominated

I saw this play on Broadway in New York City growing up..
An amazing woman. An amazing musical! Amazing performance!
I agree,, he was bursting with talent. He should of kept acting and singing after Good Times. I guess life got in the way.
...Ralph Carter appearing courtesy of RAISIN.
👍🏽💯🤗
And I never really knew what that meant until now.
LOVE HOW GOOD TIMES PLAYED THAT OUT UNTIL LIKE SEASON 3 HAHAHA. @@ericfishlegs

Whoa.. to those who do not know. Virginia Capers played the grandmother in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. SHe is an award winning musical actress!
I am so happy you posted this because I have always heard about this musical but never herad any songs from it.I heard that Nell Carter was going to do this musical before she passed away.
I had to watch this again!!
Thank you much for sharing this! Love it! Ralph is so talented. Never saw the show live but listened to the music. There were other great songs and singers on the album. Your youtube channel is awesome!
It's sad we as black people don't rep the Tony awards like we used to do....
At least The Wiz won 7 Tony Awards. That's special something
R.I.P. Virginia Capers (a.k.a. Hattie Banks on the fresh prince of bel air) September 25th, 1925 - May 6th, 2004
Ralph Carter should of won a Tony
REMEMBERING ELIZA "VIRGINIA" CAPERS (SEPTEMBER 22, 1925 - MAY 6, 2004) [09/22/2017]
Virginia Capers was wonderful. Hard to believe she's still in her 40s here thought!
She was probably 50s depending on when this was filmed
@@keonta81 It literally says Tony Awards 1974 in the title of this vid. It’s April 21, 1974. She’s 48 here.
@@jaquen1977 ok
She's playing an older character, so she is made up to appear older
Great performance!!

OMG! Ralph was so cute and talented.
Virginia Capers...she played Uncle Phil's mother on Fresh Prince of Bel Air..wow small world...
Michael Evans from Good Times and Granny Banks from The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air.
Golden Angel where was bernadette? (She was as the sister on good times)
Sweet💓👑🙏🏽🌍
A brilliant musical. Why hasn’t there ever been a revival?
Looks like in the last few seconds of Ralph's song, start watching at 3:13, a movable floor begins to pull Ralph offstage. Look carefully, he's moving faster than he is walking. Wonder why that was necessary?
Time for a revival...........
yeah this could use another revival

Broadway in the 1970s was popular but Ralph Carter was a child star sang professionally never mind about him being gay that's just who he is
Ralph was so cute.
Oh wait, I was talking about Florida.
RIP!
Why RIP? He's not dead ...
Maybe they were referring to Virginia Capers who sings the second song. She passed in 2004
Esther rolle and Virginia capers both passed on
I don't know, my mind was somewhere else.
Michele Lee for Seesaw should have won the Tony in 1974.
🙄🙄🙄🙄
Riana
All those whites in the audience, damn!
