Mbongeni Ngema should be recognized and acknowledged he did something that many producers were afraid to do he fought directly through acting and music against the system that oppressed and targeted black lives.
Ikr? I saw Sarafina performed on stage in my country. Most of the cast were teenagers. They were all St. Lucian and had convincing South African accents. They were a talented bunch.
Tears flow freely from my eyes every time I watch this movie. The pain our people endured and continue to endure, is immeasurable. When shall this oppression cease??? We continue highlighting it but not enough has been, at least not where we are at the moment. God bless motherland Africa!

Saew it live on stage, enjoyed one of the cast, as he visited my sister in our apartment. 2015, I am watching this clip, listening to the soundtrack, and, dancing in my car! This music will never grow old Mr. Hugh Masekela, the master musician!!!
Actually the music is by Mbongeni Ngema who wrote the play as well, Hugh was in exile ,Mbongeni put the show althogether by himself, he also won a Tony for Woza Albert
I saw the musical at age 12 in Germany many, many years ago. I remember crying, feeling terrible pain and giving standing ovations to the artists in the end. That musical made me understand on an emotional level what apartheid was, even though I had no connection to South Africa in any way.
I passed on my high school prom in 88, and went to see Sarafina! on Broadway with my date instead. Best Broadway experience to date. I feel sorry for those who only know the musical through the movie. It doesn't even come close to the live performance. Hopefully you can get a small sample here. The production was robbed at the Tony Awards by the way.
What is real name of Sarafina? Travelling to SA soon. Could I meet with these wonderful people of Sarafina in JHB at Park Station then go with them to the Mall of Africa and enjoy ourselves there?
