My flock just started laying. When the first egg came the noise woke me up at 4 in the morning. i thought something was eating the chickens so I threw on some cloths and went to see what was going on. The whole flock was gathered round the egg looking at it trying to figure out where it came from. The head chicken pecked at it to see if it was alive. I was afraid she would break the shell so I scooped it up and it was still warm. It was a magical moment for all of us.

She was singing “what the hell just came outta my butt?! I knew I felt funny put I thought I had to poo and instead of all that I dropped breakfast for you!!!” All of her chicken friends joined in the chorus!! Lol but seriously, that was really quite a celebration!!
I just got 10 laying hens in March. I’ve never had hens before. The first one laid her egg 3 days ago. That’s what mine were talking about too. Strangest creatures!💗
This happened today with my dad's chicken and i got soo scared!! I ran to my parent's room to tell them and after my dad went to check it out he was laughing at me!

I'm regretfully considering getting rid of them because over the winter rats got in my car and chewed up some expensive wiring. I dont want to get rid of them but I dont know how to protect my car from the rodents they can draw. My car sits next to the coop and I dont have anywhere else to park. Winter is coming. I need to make a decision. I wish I could find some responsible chicken owners to sadly take them off my hands.

My chickens are 21 weeks on Tuesday, only 1 hen (Silver Laced Wyandotte) has been laying since end of week 19. Ive got 1 Bl Australaurp, 1 Buff Orpington, 2 Ameracaunas. Info says at 20 weeks the Buff and Australaurp could be laying as well. Lol, it's an egg hunt every day in case they r laying in a different place than the Wyandotte.
Pine straw is the best nest material I have found. Been using it for 20 plus years. Easy to clean out and stays in place. The hens can get the nest made and it holds its shape.
One of my hens went to the nest box today she was in there a while the other hen and rooster started making the same noises but the hen in the nest box didn't lay a egg
No, she did not lay a blue-ish green egg. She laid a dark brown one. The blue-ish green egg must of been laid by another chicken. Maybe an Americauna or another chicken breed.

Looks like Pharaoh wants to cover her egg. My Wyandotte did the same thing, but I gathered it. She hasn't covered any others (6!)

Shavings are good for litter, but nest boxes should have hay or straw. Too easy to get broken eggs; then you have a problem.

Black copper maran hens have a bit of brown on their neck. This one doesn't. I don't think it's a true black copper Maran.
