Yet another flight on American's 787, it's starting to feel like home. I'l be flying it even more in 2020. I was all ready to tear into it, but it honestly wasn't all that bad. What do you think of American long haul? let me know down below! Timestamps: Getting To Barcelona Airport: 0:24 Sala VIP Joan Miro 0:53 Boarding: 1:22 Takeoff: 2:24 Food: 3:17 Landing 4:36 Conclusion: 5:38
How so, my thoughts on captain Marvel stand 😂. And I did fly it more in 2020, went to NZ and back from AUS just as COVID was starting. ORD-BCN is still on American’s schedule!
Hmm the pre landing service was probably so lacklustre because they forgot to load the actual pre landing snack. AA usually serve the ice cream mid flight and a warm snack just before landing.
Awesome job ! I'd say my favourite TATL economy experience has been Aer Lingus on their A330. Great crews, respectable comfort and I love Dublin's US preclearance facility in order to clear US customs and immigration in Ireland and arrive in the US as a domestic passenger. Plus for 13,000 BA Avios to go from Chicago, JFK, Boston, Dulles and Toronto to Dublin with little to no fees : it's a bargain
Glad you enjoyed it! And you're absolutely right about that sweetspot on Aer Lingus! I haven't flown them or been to Ireland since...1996 or 1997 I think back when they made a stop in Shannon. I've been wanting to review them (especially the A321LR) for a while but then 2020 came. It's definitely now on the list as I sure wasn't of drinking age back then...
My recent top choices for transatlantic economy are, in order: AF A350, DL A330, and DL A350. Why the A330 above the A350? Delta acquired several A350s from LATAM, and not all have been retrofitted with WiFi. Once that is done, I’ll prefer Delta’s A350s.
Very funny,I like your humor. Great reviews. My first international trip was on a 767 for 10 hours on Air Canada Rouge. Price was reasonable and employees great! Seating was torture including food. Coming from that to AA, we tried Main Cabin. At that point we didn’t know you could buy more legroom. Actually it was Basic Economy. We just didn’t like spending an extra $1500 for premium economy.
Well I'd say it's an airline I love to hate...I fly them a lot (about to fly them for ~35 hours in the next 2 weeks in economy) and I promise to be as fair as I can, but I have some fundamental disagreements with the management and their (lack of) vision.
All being well, we (my wife and I) will be crossing the Atlantic (London to Chicago) with American in economy in just under a month. This will be our first transatlantic flight from Heathrow - we live in the north of England and Manchester is our usual long-haul airport. But the offerings to N America from Manchester are getting ever thinner - for example, one option that I've used before is a United flight on a 767 from M'cr to Newark. It's only recently been 'upgraded' to a 767 - just a couple of years ago it was a 757, but even with that improvement I didn't fancy it. United's previous itinerary from M'cr to Washington Dulles has been dropped. So we're looking forward to this flight, me especially, as it will be in a 787, an aircraft I've never flown in before. On return we'll be in Premium Economy - better chance of getting some sleep on the overnight flight - and when booked, that was also supposed to be in a Dreamliner, but the most recent thing we heard from American (before the COVID-19 crisis) was that the aircraft had been switched to a 777. I mentioned that schedules to N America from M'cr are getting thinner. Curiously, the opposite is happening for services to Asia. For example, Emirates now offer 3 (!) A380s a day to Dubai from M'cr, and they fill them; and Etihad, Singapore Airlines, and Qatar also offer flights from Manchester. I know, from the experience of booking the trips, that it is easier to get from Manchester to, say, Karachi, Mumbai, Singapore or Bangkok than to Memphis (which is where we're actually going in April).
That's very interesting as airlines juggle around their planes due to COVID-19. H haven't flown on a American 777 in years so I can't compare, but it should be similar (other than 3-4-3 in economy). I'm scheduled to fly to London this summer on a refurbished United 767-400 this summer, we'll see if it goes! As for the north of England yeah that's tough. I know service to Manchester has been cut, but there is also seasonal service to Edinburgh in Scotland to Philadelphia (AA) and Newark, IAD, and Chicago on United.
I'm flying on this plane from Chicago to Barcelona, then catching a connection to Florence. I'm sure I'll be in the very back and my original layover in Barcelona was 3.5hrs and I just received notice it's now been reduced to 1 hour and 40 minutes. This is my first international flight, so I'm not sure but do you think that's enough time to get off this plane and find my connection? I will have only carry on bags with me. I'm seeing the size of the plane and now I'm thinking it's going to take me an hour just to de-plane from economy 😬 Anyway, thank you for this video. It's been very helpful in my planning.
You should be fine, El Prat isn't that big of an airport, though to be fair I haven't changed there myself. As long as you're on a single ticket you should be fine (and protected if anything goes wrong). Enjoy Italy!
Awesome video, down to the point and not too long. Question though...AA's Basic Economy offering - I thought the seats don't recline, you don't get meals , you don't choose our seats and no complimentary entertainment? Or is this different because it's an international flight?
Glad you liked it! Yes you are right a lot of the specifics of this basic economy are because it was on a long haul 787. I did pay to select the seat, but I was able to at the time of booking ($12). On domestic flights it used to only let you pay to select a seat 7 days before, though right now it's also at the time of booking. The domestic fleet you won't get a meal (except like 2 routes) and the in-seat experience varies wildly (I have a few videos of different configurations, depends if it's legacy US Airways or legacy American). American is now standardizing the interiors in a horrific initiative called "Project Oasis" which will remove in-flight entertainment and make the seats much tighter at 30 inches. They do still recline and there is streaming entertainment on your own device, but I have an upcoming review of that and *spoilers* it's dreadful!
@@Travelog Ahhh, got it. Thanks very much for the clarification. It's too bad that AA will be removing the IFE's. It's rather unfortunate because personally, I don't want to pull out my mobile device just to stream movies or shows. I had multiple awful experiences streaming from my phone and tablet on United, trust me, when you are 25 minutes into your 9 hour flight across the pond only to find out you cannot connect to any movies or shows but yet can watch the stupid UAL short video clips, it totally sucks and because I can't sleep well on flights, I relied on IFEs to pass the time. What also sucks is that we cannot depend on the FA's to help troubleshoot our connectivity issues with personal devices. US airlines have not learned anything from any of the top international airlines....
Indeed, I feel as though the big US airlines have really lost their way. I don't feel as though they are even trying to compete on quality, to them air travel is nothing but a bulk commodity. I'm very curious on how the current outpouring of Mexican beer is going to impact the industry moving forward as airlines are desperate to win back customers.
I'll be honest, he was before the time I really got invested in this, so I can't really take a stance based on personal experience. While I've flown TWA, Pan Am and Northwest as a kid, I didn't really get invested into the business/customer side until 2015 or so.
Indeed that's a fair point. That's why I hang on desperately to jetBlue, Southwest, and Alaska domestically. But I don't think I've ever used my American/United miles to fly up front on their own aircraft. I may take one for the team and fly Polaris at some point, but I'm in no hurry...
This is why American Airlines has a potential for going bankrupt. American could’ve kept their original Moniters and would’ve made so much more money. Now people aren’t flying American and instead choosing other airlines
I reluctantly booked AA at the end of my transatlantic cruise out of Rome to Boise by way of ORD and SEA. It's a 787 in economy. 8 years ago, I swore I'd NEVER fly AA again. Unfortunately they are partners in the Alaska Air mileage program and it was only 22500 miles from Rome to Boise, as opposed to 45k on BA. We'll see how it goes. My expectations couldn't be lower unless it was Soviet era Aeroflot on a Tupelov jet. So, maybe it'll be OK.
Ha indeed! I love to hate on American (it's like 1/2 this channel), but in many ways it's a solid "alright." The app now accurately tells you when there's boarding, and the food isn't (that) bad. I just returned from 26 hours on them on LAX-AKL/SYD-LAX and am editing 2 more American videos now (out in June/July)...and I survived at least!
Yeah god no. I've seen photos from some long haul LCC's (e.g. French Bee) and I wouldn't wish that on even my worst enemy. At this point on American I'd try for a wide body whenever you can. The plan was to fly project oasis Maxs all the way to South America...
I wish to travel on American Airlines. My children and I am very used to Economy. We got upgraded to business class from Hawaii to Los Angeles on Air Alaska. I looked at it,s economy seats and they looked close together. I always like having a screen to watch things on when flying. My disabled son is in a wheelchair and so usually a helper takes us to the passport control and security. Then we get lifted onto the plane with them using an ambulance lift sort thing. Yes, it takes us to the door of the plane. They have a narrow wheelchair to take my son to his seat.
Because they are my most flown airline and the one I have status with. But from both a customer perspective, as well as corporate management, they are sadly the worst. There isn’t a single thing (seats, routes, service, etc) that they do better than another US airline.

Hmm that could be it, like I said it's been years. Some Iberia ground staff were also on strike, that could have also impacted the catering perhaps.

Thank you for your video, I am waiting to fly on the 787, i heard so many good things about it. Again I appreciate your work.

Thanks, glad you liked it! Next week I'll be flying it again in economy for a total of...27 hours and 20 minutes. My opinion on it may change :)

You are probably the most brave person in the world surviving the Basic Economy Nightmare!
Heh it wasn't that bad, American allows a carry on, and they let you pay for seats.
I actually prefer basic economy simply because the wing view
Do they give alcohol in economy?
On international routes, yes.
To me it sounds like you're saying American Airlines sucks but the DreamLiner is a good aircraft.

You got a window seat for $12 😳!!!. Lucky you. Good flight review 👍.
I’m just curious so what did you think of the former American CEO Tom Horton
I'll be honest, he was before the time I really got invested in this, so I can't really take a stance based on personal experience. While I've flown TWA, Pan Am and Northwest as a kid, I didn't really get invested into the business/customer side until 2015 or so.
I think the bar has been set so low - particularly with American carriers that when things are average it seems like a miracle.
Indeed that's a fair point. That's why I hang on desperately to jetBlue, Southwest, and Alaska domestically. But I don't think I've ever used my American/United miles to fly up front on their own aircraft. I may take one for the team and fly Polaris at some point, but I'm in no hurry...

Feels weird hearing you say something positive about AA
I know it was odd, I'm sure I've made up for it since!
I reluctantly booked AA at the end of my transatlantic cruise out of Rome to Boise by way of ORD and SEA. It's a 787 in economy. 8 years ago, I swore I'd NEVER fly AA again. 3:55 So I am the only one who actually enjoyed that movie?
Ha hardly, it did make over a billion dollars after all! I know it was a cheap shot, but hey it was too easy I had to!
Lets hope Project OASIS wont hit the Long Haul fleet
Yeah god no. I've seen photos from some long haul LCC's (e.g. French Bee) and I wouldn't wish that on even my worst enemy. At this point on American I'd try for a wide body whenever you can. The plan was to fly project oasis Maxs all the way to South America...
SQ JFK to FRA service, amazing.
It's on the list to review once we can travel again...
$19 for wifi...
I have been in the back of A 787 for 13 hours
Ha, I can imagine. In fact there's a follow-up to this video of LAX-AKL/SYD-LAX that's about that long.
Good old Chiraq.
Yep! There’ll be another fun CTA story in the KLM 787 video...
Not impressed w AA when flying Atlantic! Iberia a330 was way better!
Iberia is so much better than American service food offerings and even snacks! we flew economy! very roomy A330
