you can get free tap water almost everywhere in germany either at home or if you ask. what they are talking is about free water and refills in restaurants. that is a different story because in germany most restaurants have high quality food with fair pricing. also in germany the restaurant staff is paid a wage they can live with. the most income for a restaurant is selling drings. its not like in the USA where you are kicked out of a restaurant after your last bite, in germany you are enjoying the time and it could be that you are staying several hours there.
free water or refills would exploid this and they would have you kicked out fast , like in the USA, because a new table full of ppl brings the money and tip for the staff.
    greetings

"Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit" is not newer, it is the same age - it is simply the third verse of the original, and verses 1 & 2 are now deemed problematic. And it is complicated: the "über alles" part was originally not so much an expression of national superiority, but for putting German unity as a primary political goal in the days before a German state existed. That meaning was twisted during the Third Reich, and the more inclusive-meant geographic mantra (Memel, Belt) turned into an imperialist battlecry.

Saunas in Germany can be segregated by gender, but there are often mixed saunas, too (because most people here don't care). The fact that you are not allowed to wear clothes there is for hygienic reasons. A towel is fine, as you have to sit on it and not on the bare wood.
A nudist beach is specially designed for this and it is indeed the case that you are not allowed to wear clothes there. If you don't want to take your clothes off, you have to go to a normal beach.
I always wonder why people get upset when people go swimming naked, etc., after all, it's a natural state and nobody has ever been born with clothes on.
Most restaurants will give you free tap water if you ask for it, but it will be room temperature and not cooled down. It's ok to pay for your drinks and not have free refills, because our restaurants pays enough to live from it, in contrast to the USA, where waiters are often dependent on tips. There is also no obligation to tip in Germany. You can do it, but you decide how much you want to tip. If someone gives a tip, it is usually rounded up. For example, the amount of the bill is €18.00, then it is rounded up to €20.00. Of course, you can also give more if you wish, or nothing at all if you were not satisfied. The important thing is that you don't have to tip at all, whereas in the USA tipping is expected and is quite high at around 20%.

If you're too lazy to return the deposit, just put it next to a trash can. There are enough poorer people who collect it and bring it back to the store for the deposit. One bottle brings 0.25€, so it's already a good source of income and the bottles are taken off the street.

German here. I like your right to free water. Our tap water is of high quality and can be served without any problems. Of course, cleaning the glass requires some effort. Or they could at least provide more public drinking fountains.
Nudity: At most beaches you should wear at least swimming clothes. Only on the "FKK beaches" you need to be nude. But don´t be surprised if you see women topless tanning in a public park. Nothing unusual here. But in saunas (Temperature 60°C up to 100°C) you sit on your towel. Bare naked. Often even mixed saunas for both men and women. Saunas are for wellness or recreation after sports.

2:30 small amendment: English "you" is the formal version like "Sie" in German. English dropped however the informal "thou / thee", which is equivalent to German "du". To Germans the American custom to address others with their first name and "You" seems therefore a bit strange - if you use the first name in German, you are usually at the "du" level with that person.
5:00 The anthem he talks about was only introduced after WW I in 1922. The lyrics were written by Hoffmann von Fallersleben in 1841 as a patriotic song challenging the particularist interests of the aristocratic rulers of the different states within the German Confederation, using the melody of the Austrian Imperial hymn. The song became one of different battle and drinking songs of the mostly student national democratic movement during the second half of the 19th century. The Nazis forbade the second and third verse and used only the first together with their party hymn. The anthem was then tainted after WW II, and for some years West Germany had no anthem at all, which led to some embarrassing events; in 1950 they played the carnival song "We are the inhabitants of Trizonesia" at an international football match instead of an anthem, and in 1953 chancellor Adenauer was welcomed in Chicago with the even older party song "Heidewitzka, Herr Kapitän" (about a boat tour on the Rhine). So Adenauer propagated using the third verse of the 1922 anthem again. The second verse was discarded because its subject is - in the style of 19th century drinking songs - mainly wine, women and singing, while the third says "unity, law and freedom are the base of (national) happiness".
6:20 That is partly outdated - in most places you can now pay by card or by ApplePay. Only smaller places or market stalls are mostly still cash-only, but for very small purchases (like a single pretzel or bread roll) you should still use cash because of the fees and provisions the seller would have to pay otherwise. Most shops however will prefer EC debit cards over US-based credit cards. MasterCard and Visa will often be also accepted, but not everywhere, and only a very few places accept American Express.
8:10 Like others said already, tap water is cheap and of very good quality in Germany. Bottled water however can be expensive (depending on the brand), and many Germans prefer sparkling water from bottles. And since many restaurants make a good part of their money from selling drinks, they will normally offer (bottled) water only at a price not much smaller than that for beer or soft drinks. In most restaurants you can however ask for a glass of tap water, and most will charge either nothing or only a small fee (called "Gedeck" or similar, supposedly for cleaning the glass and the service).

I don't know how different Hindi is from Sanskrit (please tell me), but Sanskrit is an indogermanic language just as English, German and French, which all come from the same roots. So there are a lot of similarities between them which can lead to a little bit of understanding, at least of single words. If I remember correctly brata means brother and in German it's Bruder. You see, it's not so far off. In French it's a bit different, it's frère, but there you have similarities to for example the Italian fratello.
FKK gives people who like to be naked the opportunities and the places to be naked. It has a long tradition in Germany, like FKK swimming or camping. The "law" that you have to be naked, also in saunas, is there so that nobody can just come by dressed to watch naked people. Around FKK lakes it's not uncommon to find people hiding in the bushes with binoculars and stuff like that. So the rule protects the FKK-people and separates them from people who want to enter for other reasons..
He was talking about mineral water, because that's the only water which is sold at german restaurants. It's sold to them in bottles, so of course it has also a price for the consumer. No matter, if he thinks it's expensive, I bet it's almost in any restaurant the cheapest product on the menu. And if you're half dead from thirst, everybody will surely give you free tab water, but you have to understand that Germany is not a hot country like India, so water has not the same worth in a german mind. It's more common that we see it as naturally given (which is actually not true, but you know what I mean). We're never short of water, you can even drink out of lakes and some (!) rivers, because the quality is so good, so it's rather strange if someone is "begging" for water. But in the hottest two weeks in summer, when especially older people sometimes get unconscious from the heat, it wouldn't be a problem to get free water because of this medical issue.

There's a technical side to the thing with the Credit cards: a store needs to have the equipment, and secure and encoded connections to a credit card service or payment company in order to process credit card payments - which leads to additional expenses that especially small businesses just can't afford. There are even some cases where businesses can't even get access to because of Germany's everlasting problems with digitalization and that "New Land called The Internet"... and with 1960s phone/data cables / landlines...

7:10 The reason why the water in the restaurant is not free is because it is bottled. Like Coke, Sprite or apple juice, water is sold in bottles. That costs money.
And the other water from the tap also costs the restaurant operator money. German water is one of the cleanest in Europe because it is purified in treatment plants and strictly monitored. Every town or municipality has its own sewage treatment plant. Every household pays for its water consumption via the energy supplier. This may be cheap, but it still costs money. I currently pay €17/month for my water consumption of approx. 2m³ of water (cubic metres). It's the same in the restaurant. And they have to pay a lot more because they also use a lot of water.

In Germany, tap water is always good drinking water because there are strict regulations. (Exceptions prove the rule).

  • @xasanth6318

the "no free water" is due to a regulation (from the EU if I remember correctly) that you need to sell bottled water due to health reasons... even though you can drink tab water (and most people do it at home)... so by regulation you should get a closed bottle when you order water (so it couldn't be cheap tab water)... given sometimes the quality of the tab water is still higher than some bottled waters :D

Concerning the Water, they just serve "mineral water" in German restaurants. They could serve tab water, but this would mess up the whole calculation. The restaurants here compete with other restaurants, wages have to been payed etc. So if they would serve free tab water, the result would be the prices for the food would go up. Simple as that.

Here in Germany, I would say it's just the right to have access to water, a basic right. Having to pay for it in one case or another is a first-world problem. Because you also have to look at everything that goes with it. From the money that the energy supplier gets for the water consumption, he pays his employees, the machines, tools, spare parts, new sewage treatment plants, can build new buildings, sewerage systems, cleaning, etc., and so on.

Two things I must heavily object:
Regarding the jaywalking: It is NOT forbidden by law and in most areas it is quite common. There are however some areas where it is dangerous, especially for kids, and therefore locals are not very happy to see it (and you of course should see the danger and just don't do it). Grown ups are to be a "role model" for kids. There is no penalty either, unless you put yourself or others in danger. I personally know more persons getting a ticket for it in the USA (1) than in Germany (0).
Regarding the Water: If you need (tab-) water, it will most likely be granted for free if you ask for it politely. Just don't expect to get free water in a restaurant offhandedly.

There are Gender mixed ones, gender separated ones, also Textilsauna, where you can go in with bathing clothes. FKK is more rarely than in the 70th. This are separated areas at an Beach or Sea. You can go there and sunbath naked. Elsewhere not. There you need to be with clothes. So it's an Area you're allowed to it if you want. But next to it the way bigger Area is for clothed bathing.

It's hard to believe, but even in Germany, mineral water doesn't beam itself out of the ground into the bottle, and bottles don't beam themselves into the restaurant either. So what's wrong with the restaurant charging money for mineral water that it has bought? Of course you don't have to pay for a glass of tap water. Of course you have to pay for mineral water.

When it comes to small talk, it depends on the individual whether they like small talk or not. This is the case all over the world. I like to make small talk and know many people who do too. For me it's a kind of stereotype to say that Germans generally don't like small talk!

    Nr.9:
Credit cards are a plague anyways and only cash is the real deal.
Cash: you can only give as much as you have and its not tracable, so its lived freedom and control.
CC: every payment is tracable and is being traced and you can lose control quite quickly, if you dont have proper limits set and/or do meticulous notices or online banking to control how much is left and not to mention, that it could cost you alot extra if you go overboard, not only you'll have to pay the debt...
Which what a CC really is...a debt card, but you would also have to pay heavy interest or maybe even fines...and if that CC company doesnt like a person, organisation or shop you have paid or donated to...they can and will cancel your card/account, just because they deem them problematic and you with it.
That is why they also have set limits into place, how much you are legally allowed to pay in cash and are lowering that every so often...they dont want you to have that freedom and they want you to act a certain way, and controlling the money, without the option to go cash, would grant them total control and would give them the option to literally switch you off (money to live from).
Thats why we in Germany keep fighting to keep our cash and ppl tryin to lie about it, black money, money laundering and so on as "reasons" for taking that freedom gradually away, wanting to replace it with digitial money only...all they want is total control, without any exit strategy and no bankruns and so on...thats why they also start to go after gold and silver and are tryin to get rid of or take over bitcoin and co.

Water in restaurants in germany comes from bottles not from a water pipe. Bottles cost money (and Pfand). Water from a water pipe also is not as good as the one from bottles here in germany. I don't know about the US but I'm not sure drinking this "free water" is a good idea.

Do not wish me a happy birthday beforehand:
In my opinion, this also has something to do with politeness. If someone is kind enough to wish me a happy birthday early, then I should also be kind enough to invite them to my party. Little bit arkward situation.
But it's also a dark thought as to whether you will live to see the birthday yourself.
Yes, Germans are very skeptical. But it's a quirk that you learn to live with ^^.
    But both are just theories.
Edit: And we always wish "Happy Birthday" afterwards or on the same day, but not before.

Nudity is a must in the sauna, if only for reasons of hygiene. That's why you sit or lie down on a towel in the sauna. This should be placed in such a way that no sweat can get onto the wooden benches. As far as swimwear is concerned, it is usually made of synthetic materials, which can spread harmful substances when exposed to heat. A lot of sweat would also accumulate in the swimwear, which you would later spread again in the pool, which should be avoided. Swimwear also blocks the evaporation of sweat from the skin, making it more difficult to cool your own body naturally.
If people are brought up in such a way that they do not know how to deal with natural nudity in a mentally relaxed way, they develop personal deficits. This not only leads to problems for themselves, but also to problems in their attitude and behavior towards others, especially towards women.
I personally like FKK (naturism) very much.

concerning the birthday in advance i think this applies:
James 4:13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:
14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.

    Free water:
It is simply rude to ask for this in a restaurant. In Germany the restaurants earn money with the drinks and food is available for a fair price. In addition, less water is drunk in restaurants, more beer or soft drinks. If someone is really thirsty, he can always drink water from the tap, I sometimes go to the sterile, well-maintained toilets. But I also have little money ^^.
But in general, if you go to a restaurant, you should be able to afford a drink. It's also more of a special outing to visit a restaurant, practically a little vacation. We don't get the bill straight after the meal, but often sit with our friends for a long time and have a drink. It's not like in America, where they want to clear their seats quickly.
That's why it's rude to order tap water, but it's also okay if only one person at the table does it and the rest compensate.
Once again, this is how our restaurants earn their money! And the waiters are also paid by the restaurant manager, not just through tips.
    It's fair, but it's a different culture.

There are a lot of really good countries in Europe, when you get fed up with Germany, try Belgium, Sweden, France, Switzerland...Switzerland has the same quiet hours as Germany...I always say our national sport is standing next to a pipe at 10pm to listen if the neighbours (upstairs or downstairs) are making more noise than allowed.
As Switzerland is very safe, the police are not busy, and if the neighbour complains you are too noisy, you can expect the police to show up. However, you can ask for water in Switzerland!! But you should take your shoes off!!
Belated birthdays are better than in advance! Advance is very very bad luck :D The Swiss too are very relaxed about nudity. You can have men or women only, but you have a lot of mixed sexes saunas too. Believe me, it is so hot in a sauna, you do not want to have sex, or even get close and touch another person!!
The coin for the cart: nearly everywhere in Europe. Only the Germans are big on "you should not jaywalk". As far as I know, the rest of Europe prefers you to cross at crossings, but you do not get fined.

Well, the Anthem part is plain wrong. Even though it is true that it’s not in the official Anthem anymore, it’s not forbidden. It’s still Part of „Das Lied der Deutschen“.
I find it embarrassing and shameful that Nazis miss used part of the Anthem to suggest ‚Deutschland, Deutschland über alles, über alles auf der Welt‘ would mean Germany would stay above every other nation or be superior.
The real meaning and context comes from the history in which Germany was heavily divided in very small regions, all doing what they wanted. The desire to unite all the small parts into one Germany is written in this removed part.
Instead of educating people about the abuse of of those words by the Nazis it was just removed
