Is The NHL Cover Athlete Curse Real? Part 1 - The Early Years

- Every year, EA sports gives one hockey player the prestigious honour of being the cover athlete for their latest NHL video game, where their likeness is then plastered all over the title's promotional material in order to help sell copies. Though these cover athletes are expected to dominate the league during their time on the game's box art, not everyone has been able to live up to the hype. In fact, many fans of the Madden NFL franchise believe that being on the cover is actually a curse, as the player often produces a noticeably weaker season than the year before or gets hit hard by the injury bug!
But how true is this for the NHL series? Well in this 3-part miniseries, join me as we attempt to answer the question: is the NHL cover athlete curse real?

tomas sandström is actually not finnish, he was born in finland but lived in sweden and played under swedish flag.
Like Jesse Puljujärvi was born in Sweden, but he plays under the Finnish flag (or Komarov etc.)
@@villeinonen yea, Komarov is from Estonia
If he was born in Finland than he’s Finnish
Yes he's born as a Finnish Swede, but moved as a kid to Sweden with his family. Internationally he indeed represented Sweden as Markk correctly said.
@@gobolts7375 so do you consider Bobby Nyström as Swedish then?
My brain is having a very hard time processing hockey information from a British accent.
EA sports really, REALLY needs to bring back a PC version of the game...yes you will likely be prevented from having the full GM mode etc, but who cares, give a scaled back version just so people can play.
Great vid, for future reference... the curse doesn't necessarily refer to immediate dropoff of stats following their cover.
It takes the "years" following, as in comparing career before and afterwards showed the curses wrath and also less due to stat production ... It moreso refers to the strange number of player(s) featured going on to either succumb to either career shortening injuries, or their career progressing seemingly as if they'd angered RNGesus himself!
P.s.
In Andy Moog's last name, The Moo is pronounced Mohg/Mow, like "mow the lawn", not like a cow's moo.
To be fair, players usually get put on the cover at their peak and frankly a drop usually comes after a peak. But I know what you mean, my dad was huge into this as sports games were just coming out as he was leaving college and he said it seemed like every cover athlete seemed to get hurt the next year or have shortened season following (all sports not just hockey) meanwhile I was always sad when my favorite player wasn't picked.
@@Rynoheonlydoesawsome we don't take kindly to those who go using sound logic against our conspiratorial rantings 'round these parts!!
🗣🗣
You left out Ray Bourque on the NHL 94 cover, he's the dude diving at Sandstrum.
Ray Bourque scored 19 goals and 82 points in 78 games in the 1992-93 season, and the next season he scored 20 goals and 91 points in just 72 games. so clear signs of improvement.
@@themadprofessor5756 he also won the Norris in '94
I’m not sure he was credited tho. Could be wrong
Short answer? No. Patrick Kane was on the cover of NHL 10 (still the best hockey game ever made), and scored the Stanley Cup game-winning-goal.
THE BEST HOCKEY GAMES EVER MADE ARE TABLE-HOCKEY GAMES, WHERE YOU NEED A LOT MORE SKILL THAN THIS VIDEO SHIT.
Andy " Moe-guh"
Short answer: No
Long answer: Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Crosby not even on this bish😭. Go Flames. Gaudreau next year
Great upload. Looking forward to the next part.
I love that he’s British. I think it’s awesome that he loves the sport. Great job OMR!
Can't wait to hear what you have to say about Danny Heatley 2004 cover.
@8:55 that is Jay Wells, not Randy Moller.
Clark donatelli and ray bourque are also on the nhl 94 cover
I never comment on youtube videos, but I loved this and need to see parts 2 and 3. Please continue this series
I’ve heard of the Madden curse, but never an NHL cover curse.
Pretty sure that the NHL Hockey 92 and NHLPA 93 game cover athletes were a bit odd because the 92 game had an NHL license but no NHLPA license and vise versa for the 93 game. NHL 94 was the first game to have official team and player names in the same game.
Crosby never made the cover
"ive complied a list" *shows wikipedia* 😂 saying that i love the videos
I will say this, I really miss the goalie equipment in the early 90s. Maybe because that’s when I still played.
I grew up in 2000s using old equip from 90s .. and man did it suck .. :D I felt soooo much better swaping to newer equipment.
@@Chujometlofuk Yeah, I’m not saying it protected well because it certainly didn’t. I guess I’m just old and nostalgic.
@@andrewfaucett6915 It was not just about protection... But it was much heavier and harder to move in 😀
@@Chujometlofuk no doubt! My legs are like tree trunks from trying to move around!
Owen Nolan is Irish.
Northern Irish, specifically. Northern Ireland is part of the U.K.
What about the RW & Co curse? Two nhl defenseman have been used to market this clothing brand only to be traded the next season. (PK Subban and Erik Karlsson)
I loved this video on the EA Sports NHL cover athlete part 1 and I'm looking forward to seeing further new videos! 😀
there is actually a game before NHL hockey. it was either a demo or sold in Europe only. it was international teams. no names. numbers only. the game is amazing. the gameplay is probably twice as fast as the next few games. the skating is ultra fast. the game is great. many roms of it can be found online
Bro, a 3 part series? You should have just been a journalist or anything else less cheeky 😂
Ray Bourque was also on NHL 94. You can see 77 on the cover.
another great video!
This was a blast from the past, and enjoyable. Have a thumbs up!
you should do whatever happened to justin pogge
Can’t wait till’ we get to NHL 09’ and Double Dion
Why not include the players stats after the year thry appeared
I dont think the cover curse exists for the NHL
I assure you there is no curse with this game. Many more players went on to have a great career than not.
It’s very hard to look at a piece of paper and translate goalie statistics into individual success.
I don't think it's real
So good 👍 can’t wait for part 2
*NHL 2K prior to 2009 > NHL EA.*
Yes please finish them off!
It looks like the real curse is: Be told that you will be on the cover of an early 90s NHL game -> Get immediately traded.
Lockout and Post-Lockout: Oh you know Legends being Legends while doing Legendary things.
13:01 - indeed, that photo was of a goal Kovalev had scored in game 3 of those same finals; that photo even wound up in Sports Illustrated, I recall. :P
You should do a video on the tallest Canadian ever in the NHL, Mike Cvik, who was actually a linesman
Good video 👍
Virgil Van Dijk was on the cover of FIFA 20 and he’s out with a knee injury for the rest of this season.
Its widely know about the Madden curse. Nobody is ever cursed by the NHL cover.
Kane and Toews were supposed to be on 16 together holding the cup. But Kane was accused of rape and it was only Toews.
Documentary about the Russian Penguins on Bcc four atm.
I really enjoyed this video, great job. Can't wait for part 2
Aah perfectly balanced as all things should be
_Shows Thanos_
*TOO SOON!* 😭
great concept video. well done
Pumped for the rest of the series
NHL96 actually has an error on the cover with the player picture
Hm?
PART 2 PART 2
Yes part 2!
we want part 2-3
Glenn Healy being on the first cover was just coincidental. Early on, who knew that the cover would be such a marketing tool?
I think at the time since it was EA's first ever NHL game they just wanted an action cover picture for their game to make things look exciting for those who weren't die hard hockey fans. I actually still have that game and my original Sega Genesis.
It's hard to take a hockey video seriously when it's done by a Brit sadly..my dad was British and he would agree if he were alive but British people don't usually like or watch much hockey lol
There clearly is NO CURSE.
cool ... it would be great see another part :)
Laughs in Peyton Hillis.
keep it going my guy nice vid
