Gran Turismo 2: The Mercedes-Benz Special Model Saga

- When Gran Turismo 2 was released, sadly we didn't get to drive any real-life race cars built by Mercedes-Benz. However, that doesn't mean that the game's developers didn't at least try to add a licensed special model to the dealership. In fact, we could have potentially had three separate Mercedes special models! Join me as we go back in time to before Gran Turismo 2 was ever released, and we'll look at the three special models we could have driven on Gran Turismo 2.

Oh how I wish the CLK GTR was in Gran Turismo 2
There's screenshots of if from IGN of it being in game so at some point it was planned. Sadly there were no remnants in the files.. it's sad.
It is in the game as a mod
I still lament not getting to drive both that amazing CLK GTR back in Gran Turismo 2 and also quite amazing C-Class DTM. I'm glad that we got the CLK GTR in LM form eventually in Gran Turismo 4 and it was confirmed to be in GT7 a couple months back. but man it would've been amazing to see it on the PS1 racing on some of GT2's own special race tracks such as Red Rock Valley and Grindelwald.
What I find really odd is the C-Class DTM never making any future Gran Turismo appearance after PD's attempt for GT2. Yet the Opel Calibra DTM would appear again in Gran Turismo 3-6 and the Alfa Romeo 155 DTM would return in Gran Turismo 4 with a more accurate livery. Which was another car confirmed to return in GT7. Yet their rival car just doesn't.
hey its in txrz/shutokou battle zero kinda since alll the cars are unlicensed bootlegs in that game that are just missing their badges
@@jettlucashayes8508 Yup, TXR0 has unlicensed cars that are duplicates. However, it doesn't have the CLK-GTR in it. I think I know what car you're thinking of though. The yellow car with the D2 like decals right?
If it's that, that's actually a Lexus GS/Toyota Aristo replica made to look like a Mercedes CLK-DTM. The DTM and GTR are complete different kinds of race cars.
Considering the screenshots of the CLK-GTR date from February 1999, that means the car probably didn't even make it to the playable build seen at E3 1999. It's such a shame it was cut and that we never got this beast in Gran Turismo 2.
This beast is comming to gran turismo 7 but would love to see the gtr variant and the road car
Now this is the top notch content that I can't wait to watch.
I think EA is to be blamed for this. They had exclusive license to use this car in NFS High Stakes and what I heard and saw is that EA is also to be blamed cuz about the Porsche situation cuz they had an exclusive license as well until 2016. GT Sport came out in 2017 so yeah it all comes together.
Now it makes sense why the CLK race car revs so high and is all wheel driven like a Class II DTM touring car. It simply has the performance data of the C-Class that fits Class II regulations, to which the Calibra and 155 also adhere, unlike the later DTM cars like the final CLK were V8 powered and rear wheel driven.
It's bizarre that I've seen your videos from more than 10 years ago and never made the connection.
Unlike its competitors, the mid-90s CLK didn't have AWD. On the other end of the technology spectrum, the Calibra had a form of DRS in 1996. I would not have known any of this if I hadn't happened to watch the '96 ITC on RUclips just a few weeks ago.
Me: Who the fuck is still making videos about A 99 Gran Turismo game??
Also Me: proceeds to watch it and enjoy it.
For many years, the curiosity of the CLK GTR that was cut from GT2 has been with me. You putting this video up as a deep dive on it was very much excellent, and appreciated. Thank you, Matt!
Ah, yes, the CLK Race Car, I remember wanting a copy of someone's save file to try this car, which apparently has been hybrid'ed so it can reach outrageous speeds, do wheelies, and probably fly without possibility of getting back on track on the Test Course. Sad to see these cars excluded from the final game although the mentioned car did appear albeit not officially. A C-class touring car would have completed the DTM trio as well.
97 CLK GTR is the best!
Given that GT2 has been cracked wide open for modding, maybe one day we'll get the CLK GTR as a mod.
My theory is that PD wanted to include the CLK-GTR _and_ the CLK-LM. It would make sense, considering the other GT race cars, and their road-going counterparts, that are in the game.
What they _might_ have done is have the GTR be Mercedes' special model, while the CLK-LM would be its racing modification, akin to the XJ220, Lotus Elise GT1 and TVR Speed-12.
Alternatively, it might have been like the Vector M12, Viper GTS, Toyota GT-One and Nissan R390s, where the road car is a standard model, while the race car is a special/prize model.
that would of looked so cool back then aswell but obs ea licence was the bugbarer in them days pitty really cos they all mint cars too wish it was in gran trurismo 2
It would have been cool with the mercedes in gran turismo 2
it's sad that the developers have withdrawn this famous CLK GTR from the grand turismo 2 games because it is a game that i still play today and i never tire of it, i would have liked this spicy taste with the CLK GTR is a shame :/
awesome video @MattJ155
Can you make a video soon about the
Tommy Kaira R34 in GT2
that sadly never appears on later GTs games
This is the one bois
the inclusion of these cars might not seem like a lot but there would be many more very likable endgame racecar options if they did. shame.
so... how i can get the CLK-Race Car ? thank's
Weirdly the car without Warsteiner logos on the sides still have it on the bonnet :D
Will you be playing the gta trilogy out on the 11th? Be great to see a few videos on it :)
Clk GTR?
you dont have to buy that issue of edge. Its scan is for download on a website which name i forgot :)
but of course i bought it years ago because of GT2 content :D
Great video! 👌
Hello RUclips
more like this please

I’m also pretty sure EA held the exclusive rights to the C5 Corvette for some amount of time. I’ve always wondered why it’s not in GT2
