We also built Howard AIr Force Base and Rodman Naval base just a short distance from there. We abandoned all of them in 1999. Billions of dollars worth of US military bases were abandoned. President Clinton could have renegotiated the treaty Carter signed in 1979, which made us leave in 1999 but chose not to.
The US didn't build that larger canal in the background where that ship is pictured. That's the real canal now, longer and wider for the super cargo vessels. But you're right, Chinese control of the Canal during war would be a disaster for the US.
