- The talk is about smart cane for blind
Trained in Indian Classical Music, Rohan Paul is a young innovator behind Smart Cane. After spending his undergraduate days at the department of Computer Science and Engineering, at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi he joined the Robotics Department of Oxford on the Rhodes Scholarship. He is passionate about creating affordable assistive devices for people with disabilities.
Before the creation of Smart Cane, it was felt that the traditional cane for the visually impaired was not very useful because it had a limited range (0.5m) and couldn’t detect obstacles above knee-level. He developed a cane-mountable embedded system that increases the detection range to 3m and detects knee-above obstacles. The system incorporates an optimized algorithm for ranging and detection of speeding obstacles like cars, scooters. The project is in collaboration with the National Association for the Blind, New Delhi and is presently at the pilot trial stage.

This is very exciting! I use a Seeing Eye dog but sometimes I need to use a cane. My dog might be ill or I could be visiting a place where there are several cats who hate dogs. Also when I have to be between dogs and am waiting to be placed in a class to train with my new dog. These canes "give so much more feedback and information to help a blind person avoid dangerous and painful encounters with things like tree limbs and sign boards and other dangerous objects. Also knowing how close we are to a person in a line waiting for your turn is really important! Regular canes can also just slide underneath a thing that's going to be painful like a closed gate or a car. It will be a long time before you can offer these smart canes to people in other countries like the U. S. I'm really excited for the blind people in India!! And I know you will continue your work to make the canes even smarter! This was a great video! Thank you guys for caring about us. You're building a better mouse trap you know.
