I stayed a Catholic for the intellectual tradition, too. I also grew up in Connecticut in the 60s, and my experience was very much like Patrick’s-very rooted, as Simone Weil might say. That world all but gone now, sadly.

I think Deneen’s postliberlism is in the spirit of Chesterton and the Distrubitist movement more broadly . If this perspective is rooted in the pre-modern , then I’m inclined to call the classical liberals or “ right-liberals” modern and the “left -liberals” as post modern . What’s interesting to me is the extent to which the post modern liberals and the pre modern Distrubutists share common objections to the modern classical liberals . The trouble is that both the premodern and the postmodern solutions to the problem of modernity have serious defects . Hence , my feeling of homelessness . A conundrum to the say least .
