    Over fifty years old, on grainy film, and it has aged beautifully and is still funny as hell. Jim Henson was brilliant.

    If I recall it correctly, the purpose of the training video was to show that you can take something as simple as an automated coffee machine and overcomplicate explanations as to what each part does [and alienate the users].
    Cookie Monster was acting as the computer 'gremlin', wearing out components, breaking components down [in an exaggerated way]. I think it was also to show that having expensive, custom-built components instead of off-the-shelf parts is a bad idea.

      Chris Curtiss More like technically Cookie Monster’s great-grandfather since Cookie Monster’s father was shown in the show one time during a Monsterpiece theater segment.
      I still would like to think this was Cookie Monster before he lost all his teeth though since that was actually a prototype of Cookie Monster.

    The fact is Cookiemonster wasn't around back then and Jim Henson used a lot of his puppets for commercials and clips such as these. After this IBM video the same puppet was used again for the Ed Sullivan show, then in some commercials for food (forgot which) and finally was introduced in Sesame Street in 1969.
    Originally he was the same kind of bully brute he had been in these IBM videos, and had no name. Later he was given a cookie addiction and Cookiemonster was born

    Like Frank Oz after him, Jim Henson did a very good Cookie Monster, plus that IBM thing got used later on the Muppet show but with a different monster.

    I think this training video was too make sure people actually read product information before using it. This is an important thing to remember since failing to do so can lead to damage to machines or computers. That is a big waste of money for companies.
