I explain how your fingernails show health problems.
    Timestamps:
0:00 How your fingernails show health problems (especially nutrient deficiencies)
0:56 If your nails are brittle this is usually because of a folate deficiency
2:40 Brown or grey nails could be low B12 especially if you are a vegan
In this video, I describe how your fingernails show health problems, especially nutrient deficiencies. I previously did an entire webinar about how deficiencies show up in your hair, skin, and nails. But here I focus solely on your nails.
Your nails give a lot of clues about what’s going on with you internally as far as your nutrients and your foods.
Vertical ridges on your nails could indicate a slow thyroid (hypothyroid). But they could also mean a vitamin B12 or iron deficiency.
If your nails are brittle or break easily this could be because of a folate deficiency. Folate is found in leafy greens, and people with brittle nails usually aren’t consuming enough vegetables. Or it could be a biotin deficiency, meaning a lack of good gut flora (bacteria). If you have a history of taking antibiotics or of digestive issues you may be deficient in biotin.
Fungus on your nail, indicated by a yellowish discoloration, is also an indication of low biotin because of an imbalance in your gut. Taking silica will help strengthen your nails.
If your nails have little white spots this is due to a zinc deficiency. If the white spot is in the center, where it would be after six months of growth, we know you probably had a birthday party six months ago and you probably ate the entire cake because refined carbohydrates and sugar deplete zinc. So too will stress, IBS, and other digestive issues.
Horizontal thin white lines near the base of the nail are indicative of low calcium. Thicker white lines in a different location are usually because of a vitamin B3 (niacin) deficiency.
If your nail is slightly brown or grey that could be low B12 especially if you are a vegan. B12 comes from animal products. Or if you had a gastric bypass that will affect your absorption of nutrients. So too could it be low stomach acid?
If the nail is clubbed that could mean a liver or kidney problem.
And if your nail is mostly white with a pink strip across the top that could also be low B12. If it’s completely white or blue that could be low B1.
The common theme of how your fingernails show health problems is low B vitamins and minerals which are involved in making protein, which is what nails are made of.

Thanks for the video, Dr. Berg! I appreciate all you do for us. I'm hypothyroid and have a deep horizontal ridge in the center of my two big toenails. I don't take iron supplements, but do eat beef liver once a week. Apparently, that's not enough. I'll add some lactoferrin, then iron if no change. Worst of all, my fingernails separate from the nail beds when my nails suddenly become paper-thin, even though I take NDT. They thin after a sweat busting activity (Not from the gym or exercise, just living, walking across a parking lot, walking upstairs, etc.) and after I take Magnesium (any brand or type of supplement including Pellegrino). When my nails separate from the nail beds, my fingers tips turn red and sore. They're so sore, I can't use my hands. The pain lasts for a couple of days, but the nail takes weeks, sometimes months or even years to connect to the bed. Have you ever heard or seen anything like this?

I had crummy nails for YEARS. I tried taking biotin, but it never helped. I was at my wit's end....then I happened upon a YT video that claimed soaking your nails every day in olive oil would work wonders.
Yeah, right! And who has time to soak for 15-30 min every day?
So I compromised and oiled my nails every time I got near oil.
    Olive oil while making dinner,
Avocado oil while removing makeup, Coconut oil while making bullet proof coffee, Almond oil when I moisturized my hands at bedtime, etc.
Wow, it didn't take long before my nails stopped tearing and splitting. My thumbnails are still a work in progress, but overall, I am thrilled. 👐🏻

    • @jaytee2642
      @jaytee2642 5 лет назад +5

      @@ellehub2136
I'm not sure which time frame you're referring to.
The length of time my nails were a mess?....decades
The length of time the video said to soak in oil?... 15 to 30 min
The length of time before my nails began to show improvement?....a week or less.
This probably won't solve the problem for everyone, because our nail problems don't all have the same cause.
In my case, I wash my hands a lot and I think they were dried out from that, so the oil protects from the drying effects of washing.

You should also include; when nails are hyper curved, or "humped" - that usually indicates a respiratory issue, specifically in the lungs. This health indicator will always begin with the toes and move into the hands as the respiratory system deteriorates further.
