If you ever check out Indigo Gaming's retrospective on CyberPunk (overarching into Sci Fi in general) a lot of these mediums were inspired by books, that were inspired by books, that were inspired by books (myths, legends, folklore as well) etc. As far as games go though, I'd say "Spacewar!"

I remember being in high school riding the hype train with my friends and everyone in our LAN center was going insane. It was so scary at the time.

Well it was supposed to be getting a remake (coming out 2017!), then Night Dive decided they wanted to do a reboot, and changed a ton of things, fans were NOT happy, especially the kickstarter backers that backed it expecting it to be a remake/update. Then Night Dive realized they had too much "drift" and decided to go back to doing what they were originally.
I just brought OG system shock on steam so I can play it for the first time! I can't wait to experience history and then re-live it during the remake! I liked bioshock 1 let's see how it's father holds up lol ( I know they aren't related story wise)

System Shock and SS2 were definitely two of the best games ever, as were both Ultima Underworld (not "Underground", hehe) games. Even though System Shock's spiritual successor Bioshock was a great game as well, I still thought System Shock 2 was even better.

I think it is even better than its sequel and definitely doesn't get enough praise for what It achieved: 3d objects, working cameras (2 years before Duke Nukem di it, the unique combination of a point and click interface with the Doom-like shooting, the unrivalled aestetic it pulled of. In a word, a Masterpiece
I would be more curious for a new sequel to the system shock series rather than remake but it could be good to produce awareness to the series if it goes well maybe a remake of 2 and later maybe a 3rd game in the series
System Shock 3 was in development up until recently. It’s current state is a bit unknown, but the expectation is that it has been quietly canceled. Either that, or stuck in its own development hell. I do hope it comes back, though. The SS games are two of my favorites of all time. I even backed the SS1 remake to the level of getting my name in there as one of the cyborgs…

It's interesting seeing gameplay footage from games that came out when I was a little kid or before I started PC gaming.
I didn't even know about this game. It's amazing that such an influential game could be unknown to so many people.
a little funfact about the German version of SS1: Shodan's German voice actress in the first game is the same that later voiced GLaDOS!

id say ss1 is the most technically ahead game for shooters, more so than half life
With all of the differences the remake will have I can’t say my expectations are exactly high, and the many delays having helped that either.
The influence of the system shock brother are everywhere. The first second of SS2 (just the loading screen) influence the UI of dead space !
