'Gnosis' is cognate to the Sanskrit word 'jñāna,' which also means knowledge - mundane knowledge in some contexts or spiritual insight in other contexts. Jñāna yoga involves meditative techniques for sharpening the faculty of discernment or conscience (Sanskrit, buddhi) and progressively drawing one’s awareness inwards until, with much practice, it becomes possible to discern universal consciousness as the underlying essence of oneself and of all phenomena.
In certain schools of tantra, this introversive process of cognitively separating universal consciousness from its identification with mortal, individualized, finite elements (body, mind, objects/possessions, etc.) can be followed up with an extroversive process of integrating one’s experience of universal consciousness with one’s experience of objective existence, so that there is no duality between inner/spiritual and outer/worldly realities.

For me, I could best describe it like this. It was like my whole life was a collection of puzzle pieces. Every memory, every system, every law of nature used to just be individual pieces floating in a void. Then I spent a lot of time in reflection, and I was able to sort those pieces, then assemble them to understand the full picture of who I am, what I am, and what everything is. Like understanding the connections between everything.

Ken Wilber delt with this dual/non-dual stuff in his quite profound "The Spectrum of Consciousness" the book which started spectrum psychology.
In Jonathan Goldman's "Healing Sounds the Power of Harmonics" there are diagrams showing how different parts of the body resonate with vowels, yes I know their English vowels, but the principle might remain the same.
Maybe language can give instructions to practice a method that induces an experiential state, such as gnosis, an indirect approach to experience.
I'd say nous is more like Eugene Gendlin's "Felt Sense"
Peter Kingsley makes the same interpretation regarding early "Philosophers" such as Parmenides, that they actually practised psychotechnologies that changed their state of consciousness.

The difference between knowledge of the physical world and knowledge of the instinctual/intuition is fascinating. I think the light talked of in history may be the energy contained in atom’s. All matter consist of energy for lack of a better word. Moving, attracting, deflecting. In constant motion though solid to perceptions. Science explains how, but the self conscious, that’s a mystery. Concerning the radical nonduality of light, it would be interesting to point Prof. Hanegraaff to the nondual Saivism of Kashmir with its concept of an encompassing, hence nondual „light of (universal) consciousness“ (Skr. prakāśa) which both in terms of metaphysical speculation and experiential practice comes very close to this.

I will have to wait to get the book until my finances are in an improved state, as it's pricey...that's Cambridge University Press for you, alas, but it looks great!
I am glad that Prof. Hanegraaf has picked up on something I've been saying for years (including in one of the New Thinking Allowed interviews I did, which Dr. Mishlove did not seem interested in pursuing further), namely that there is an epistemological difference in what people have been pursuing about--for example--the Eleusinian Mysteries: it's not a "what," as in a bit of propositional knowledge that we currently don't know, but instead more like a "how," as in an experience of something, or a "what it's like," a feeling or state of being that is inculcated and--literally!--initiated by the rituals in undergoing the Eleusinian Mysteries (or, for that matter, any Mystery tradition). We have become too used to thinking of "mystery" in the genre fiction and film sense of "whodunnit" and some secret bit of (propositional) knowledge rather than the sensory experiences that lead to supersensory gnosis.

If nous is "the instrument which allows us to have gnosis," though not in the traditional expression of mind and intellect as we think of them, then how could this be expanded through applying the Hermetic Principle of Mentalism? If "The All is Mind, the Universe is Mental," it seems to me (pardon the amateur over-simplification here) that our very questioning of these concepts is an example of Divine Cosmic Consciousness experiencing itself, or one hell of an AI being who's been gradually awakening towards self-awareness.
Definitely adding this book to my reading list. I cannot even begin to express how relevant this video was to my particular path.

What a lovely conversation. I especially like the distinction between "Gnosis" and "Gnosticism". Too often the "-ism" get in the way of what it's meant to study. It's also quite "enlightening" to note the early emphasis on literal light (various forms of electromagnetic radiation) itself, which does indeed make up the fundamental nature of Nature (atoms/matter) itself. Cheers! (Star-Splash!)

Really great talk! This sounds so much like Transpersonal Psychology - attaining/revealing wisdom through altered/non-ordinary states of consciousness.

Is anyone else thinking that the 10 powers of light (7 planetary + 3 fundamental) are actually the sephirots of the Tree of Life?
I really have to get reading more about hermeticism, the way Professor Hanegraaff is talking about it is groundbreaking for me. I never ever heard anything like this before, this changes everything for me

The idea of the source pēgē reminds me of the concept of emptiness in Mahayana Buddhism or the Dao in Daoism

He tells us in English we don’t have the word that he just used in English! English is a wonderful borrower and inventor of words to express ideas. Just because most people haven’t studied isn’t the fault of the language. As if there is this perfect language somewhere.

This is SO on point! I’ve learned that we can read as many books on a subject as we want, but a profound understanding can only occur within. That is not explainable lol
