@@endlesssoundscapes5284 Craigslist started in SF so it's a free way to find space/ roommates. If you go to corporate apartment websites, the prices of course are usually higher. If you don't need a lot of sun/ don't mind a bit of a commute (keep in mind SF is only 7 miles by 7 miles in total), the neighborhoods with less sunlight - like the Outer Sunset - are cheaper. But you can just go a few miles within SF and there is sun regularly. Also head 20 minutes south to the Peninsula or east to Oakland and we're basically sunlit year around (70 degrees and sunny where I'm at) even when SF is foggy/ cold.
Really helpful video!! I am in SLC, Utah (UofU) and graduating soon with my PhD and the kind of jobs I am looking at are mostly in SFO or NYC and the living cost difference had me freaked out. So, it's nice to watch a video like yours and realize the other perks that might bring the living cost down. Thank you and stay safe and happy!! 🥰🥰
Good for you! I'm looking at this for a relative who doesn't believe it when I tell them too many articles, videos, etc. on San Francisco overestimate the amount of $$ it takes to live here. You're right housing is the priciest expense (I own my own place having come here year ago) but even with that, there are multiple ways to save. Because CA produces much of the US' produce, etc. if you learn to cook and shop selectively, you can get even organic, high-quality produce, milk, etc. for reasonable prices. And the weather is fine enough year around that outdoor activities can be done even in winter.
My wife and I have a fun money budget too. While I do get up to about 3 lunches covered a week at work, I can buy lunch if I need it with this money or buy what I want. She ended up saving hers and bought a Microsoft Surface Pro with it and it was like a mini savings plan. Super nice to see other couples doing this too.
I eat all of my meals at work. At the end of the day they let us take home any leftovers if we want. Most people do not. I take the leftovers home and my wife brings it for her lunch the following day. She will eat the day old bagel or pastries. This helps us to save money on food. I know it is not for everyone though.
Totally were the same as you guys. When we moved here , I thought we were not going to save. But it turns out your breakdown is very similar to ours. Free food goes a long way haha
I'm from India 🇮🇳 I really didn't know that cost of living in San Francisco will be this much expensive, here in India the rents are so much cheap, for 2 bedroom house the average rent cost is around 20000 Rupees that means only 260 dollars!!
To get a studio is like a race. Studio apartments always run out first so once something is available act on it quickly. I've live in the Bay Area since 2006 and studio apartments there go by quick. One day there is an opening the next day its gone.
I dont think San Fran is the world's most expensive city. I'm pretty sure Singapore, Hong Kong, and Tokyo are all most expensive. Paris might even but more.
I'm surprised about the difference between food and rent. For example, I'm living in a countryside of Venice, Italy and I spend 400 Euro for food and 500 Euro for rent... the figure is almost equal. Stranger that in San Francisco supermarket the price is so low. Here chicken, eggs and milk are more expensive than there.
Wow this is my dream. I’m going to be a freshman at Georgia Tech (mechanical engineering major) this fall, and I’m super excited! I’d love to live in San Francisco one day, but it’s always seemed completely unreasonable. Thank you for showing it can be possible if you’re smart with money :).
Nice video and very interessting informations for me as an german guy! Unbelievable how much you have to pay for rent!! I didn't know that how expensive it is in San Francisco. I know this beautiful town only from vacation...but I did not have any clue how expensive it is to live there. But, such a lovely town has its price... ;-) Best regards from Germany!!
Oh my gosh! I lived near Chicago and can't believe how much you pay in rent for a small studio! Oh my gosh! Got my first house under $200K in the burbs of Chicago. You must be a professional, etc. to afford that kind of rent not to mention the state of CA sucks out of your income tax, etc. Thank goodness you don't own as the property tax alone will drain you. Sorry to sound like this but I can't believe $2400 for a studio!!!!
I live in las vegas and here the adverage price of a 2b apartment is around 700 , the power bill is high cause of the heat but cost of living is low compare to cali
Josh mate, i have challenge for you. Make an awesome video with full animations, designs and use all your tech magic and make an awesome video with katie and post during christmas or new year.
Just out of curiosity, could you do a comparison betwwen the internet speed in your office (josh as well as katie) with your home speeds. Like use the speedtest.i n. Maybe just post in the comments or include it in your next vlog/video. Waiting for a new video. P.S. Activate the JOIN button/feature. We like you and wanna support you and look forward to having special live sessions (for those who join the channel)
Hi Josh, can you please answer me some questions? I am Brazilian and I study financial management college in Brazil. I really like this area of technology, but do you think that even if I do not have a diploma in this area, companies will be interested? Just another doubt sorry, I also think a lot about entering this area because of the money, if college is not something that prevents me from being hired, what languages would you recommend me to learn and which way would be "faster" to get a job and earn good money? I'm sorry if the questions seemed superficial and if there is a grammatical error in the text (I used Google translator)
Why does the LGBT+ capital of the world have to cost arms and legs to live there? Not only that, SF has gone downhill with increasing homelessness, gentrification and street crime. Even next door Oakland has gotten crazy expensive. This just breaks my heart.
America is damn expensive I get Fiber Wifi (jio fibre) at 5 dollars a month 110gb per day at 25-30 Mbps My phone bill is 5 dollars for 80 days(prepaid) Unlimited calls and 1.5gb data per day Amazon Prime membership 1.5 dollars/month Netflix 6dollar per month(4 people share it) Thanks to richest man of India (4th richest in the world) Mukesh Ambani, who is providing such cheap internet.
Housing is typically the largest expense for people living in San Francisco. The median household income is around $112K a year and the average monthly rent is $3600. It is tough to focus on averages though, because the income inequality here is insane!! A few years into a tech career, it isn’t uncommon to be making $300K- 400K a year in total compensation.
@@JoshandKatie Also do you think because of these large salaries it's driving the rent market up too? Or if you're making that much you'd have purchased by now.
Definitely driving the rent market up with those high tech salaries! Homes are so expensive here and can be unattainable even for high salary tech workers.
Man good for you guy's but theres got to be a catch. I am not single or not sharing a apartment with someone idont know. And nobody but my family will ever use my car. Your basically living off whats leftover..? Wow...bak to Utah i go.. Alright guys, what did you think? Were these figures higher or lower than you were expecting for San Francisco living?
Where did you find your apartment? I am moving to SF in a month from the UK and I would love some tips on how to search for a place.

👋 hey there fellow Utah student! Yeah you would be surprised. Apply and see what your offers are before getting too freaked out.
$3400 a month can get you a high rise penthouse in Las Vegas.
I believe it. When we lived in Utah we paid 1/3 of what we pay now!
Vegas doesn't have high paying jobs like San Fran does.

We were shocked moving out here as well! It is so expensive but worth it for us to be in the heart of the tech scene
go to Munich Ignatz, almost the same crazyness when it comes to rent / housing etc. Not just a SF thing.

The amount you pay for internet for a month is what I pay for 1 year of 40 Mbps (5 MB ps) unlimited 😅✌️
Damn that's a lot of expense 😂🔥🔥🔥
How is the cost of living compared to income? What is your savings rate?
Free gym membership is a nice perk. I spend $35 per month for the gym. I belong to two clubs and I try to work out 3-4x a week.
Wow milk in Ohio is only $1.49 and it’s almost $4 in California. Wow that’s crazy
Didn’t mention paying the poop tax to clean up after the homeless people

norgepab depending on the map... Nob Hill or Lower Nob Hill!
