- Hello folks, this week we share with a bunch of tips and techniques on how to jig up those tasty cod. There are so many great cod catching tips to give, that we had to break it up into two different fish catching parts! This is part 1 of how to jig for saltwater cod.
We're in the saltwaters of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, baited up with T-Turns, teaser rigs, and our secret weapon, the flexi-jig! The only jig which flexes to help land significantly better hook sets.
If you'd like to grab a flexi-jig of your own, you can get them here:

Part 2 of saltwater fishing for cod will be next week.
Until next time, good luck and good fishin'!
Ivo
Wow that looks like a lot of fun! Very rewarding too!
We really did have a lot of fun and part two will air next week :) Thanks for tuning in and good luck on the water
What a nice fish you got and your friends
Glad you enjoyed this cod episode Luis and thanks for writing in :)
I fish for shallow water cod well to the southwest. My friends and I would have thrown every one of those back. We fish 40 to 60 feet and catch fish up to 15 lbs with fat 23 to 25 inch fish the ones we go home with on a regular basis. We use diamond jigs and teasers or clams
Man, I love watching your videos!!!
Thanks for the great feedback - makes our efforts all worth while :) Part two next week :)
Great video Ivo

Good eats there man..Great Show!
Cod really are fantastic eating :)
Great video. Do flexi jigs work for freshwater ??
HI Ben - Flexi Jigs are rated for both fresh and salt water - here are a couple fresh water, Flexi jig videos: How to Catch Largemouth Bass Along a Weed Edge - Bass Fishing the Detroit River using the Flexi-Jig How to Jig for Walleye - Jigging for Freshwater Walleye on the Detroit River using the Flexi-Jig
Thank you ;-)
Great video
Hi Ken - so glad you enjoyed this Cod episode and thanks for taking time to write - until next time good luck and good fishing :)
I'm guessing the regulations are different than here in newfoundland here u got to keep what ever u catch and your only allowed 5 fish a person and 15 per boat and I'm pretty sure we are not allowed to use live wells
Great to hear from you in Newfoundland :)
Small cod, but nice.
Great vid. I really like your hat and was wondering where I could get one.
Hi Michael - glad you enjoyed this cod episode and funny you should ask about the hat - we just special ordered a bunch and they should hit the on line store in about 2 months :)
i bought some of your flexi jigs and found that jigging strips of cut bait works really well. Believe it or not i hooked up with 2 nice channel cats! overall a great product. And i was wondering do u guys get thresher sharks in your area? and have you ever specifically went fishing for shark? great videos ivo!
Glad you are enjoying our videos and that you like the Flexi Jigs....I love them as well :) I have caught many sharks, but it's always while targeting other fish :)
I think it would be cool if yall did a gar fishing video... just a thought
If we get a chance, we will try to :)
What breaking strain is the braid you are using and what size hooks are on your terminal tackle? I also notice you don't use a weight to get your bait to the bottom.....would this change if the sea was running a strong current or it was rougher? Peace from Glen in the UK
Hi, Glen! I saw your 6-year old question was not answered. I have been using the flexi-jig for a few years and had some success for bottom fishing. The heaviest jig Thundermist makes is 2 oz (with a buck tail style hair tied to it). The next is the 1 oz jig without hair. I usually use the 1 oz jig for hake and cod from the bottom.
I match the jig with Berkley Gulp bait. They hook fish very well. The only issue is that the hooks get rusty very easily. When you have strong current, the 1 on jig will not be able to sink quick enough for jigging and they would not hold position for the spot your are fishing.
Hi Ivo, I'm from the Cape Cod area and I love fishing for cod but I have a hard time catching them. Any tips?
P.S. I got the flexijig as a gift for Valentine's Day great jig I already love it!!!
Hi Mike - we launched at Plymouth and we only ventured out about 2 miles off shore - if you can find some structure or depth changes, fish the breaks where the depth goes for shallow to deep or vice-versa and you should catch cod :) PS> you are going to absolutely love using the Flexi Jigs
Fresh Cod on the Flexy Jig. How does it get better? Delicious
We did have a fantastic, fresh cod fish fry that day :) Cod are excellent eating
Was this in Buzzards Bay
+Fastbass123 Dean This cod episode was filmed in Cape Cod Bay, out of Plymouth MA :)
What bait would you use to catch fluke
One of the preferred baits is to use squid, but cut bait strips such as cut mackerel or cut bunker or cut sea robin for example will all work as well - the Size SS20 Viper Spoons are absolute ideal for catching fluke :) ruclips.net/video/sv9vCRcEvlA/видео.html
I know saltwater cod have 3 dorsal fins but like u said how to jig for saltwater cod. Is there a freshwater type of cod?
Hi Anon - in freshwater, there is a fish called burbot - which is also referred to as a fresh water cod :)
I mite go fishing cod today!!!:)
Sounds great Adrain - hope you get out and have a great day of cod fishing :)
I wish they would make it in to Long Island Sound. But I believe their coastal migration keeps them out of it.
Not sure if they make it down that far south, but you can get them in up in NJ and Rhode Island especially in the winter :)
*****
Though I believe a few strays may have, I don't believe they've ever been a presence in LI Sound due to their schooling, migration habits, and preferred habitat. I've a book floating around somewhere from a high school marine biology class that I took about LI Sound marine fishery, and it briefly touched upon the subject.
It sure would be nice to have decent amounts of cod locally during the colder months, to where I could just get in the boat, fish, and be back before the earlier sunsets.
And really, my boat {a 16' Grumman}, I'd be a little leery about leaving Long Island Sound in, where the seas tend to stay under 3 feet.
is there gonna be a video how to cook them?
We'll have to see what we can do about that - meanwhile, if you have some cod, try this recipe - it's using sea bass, but it will work great for cod as well :)
I'm looking to catch some cod and I have a beefy 30 lb conventional outfit is that to heavy for the 25-30 lb cod we catch here?
The outfit you have is not too heavy for cod - especially if you catch a real big one :)
YUM!
Cod is one of my favorite fish :)
What knot is recommended for tying jigs for saltwater, and is 20 lb test line(mono) sufficient for sea fishing?
Hi Ethan - 20 lb test line is fine for slat water use :) As for tying jigs, my favorite knot is the Palomar knot...quick, easy and very effective :) How To Tie a Drop Shot Rig Using a Palomar Knot - With Bonus Drop Shot Tips
***** Thanks Ivo!
what fishing line are you using
Im thinking Andes???
and at what test ???
Hi Stefano - I was either using Power Pro or it was Thundermist Lure Company Prototype line (which should be out in a few months). IT was 20 lb braided line with a fluorocarbon leader (the fluorocarbon was Seaguar brand)
what gram weight would you use for 20m or 30m? Also i tried to see your rig but had a hard time seeing it.
+Jared Ingalls Hi Jared...I was using 1 oz which is close to 30 grams :)
What rod are you using and can u link me to a site if you can please ?
The rod I was using in this cod episode was a Penn salt water rod, 1 piece, 7 foot long :)
What fishing rod & action were you using please?
Penn rods and Salt striker rods, med/heavy action :)
So foul hooked fish can be kept in the States?
Hi Steve - always nice to hear from you ....it's always best to check the local regulations as they may vary from state to state :)
what else could you use the flex jig for?
Hi Thomas, the Flexi jig is good for fresh water and salt water fish - any fish that you would use a regular jig for, you would use the Flexi Jig for - you are going to love using the Flexi jig :)
thanks!
Ahhh the old 1/8th of an inch shorts, i swear fish know the size limits and grow up to just short of keeper size.
Happens all the time :)
Just sneak em in ur cooler and wen the game warden comes go full throttle to a differnt spot hahaahahah
As opposed to…..fresh water Cod?
i prefer freshwater cod :)
Where's the gulp lol
don't know if its just where i live, but if you foul hook a fish no matter how big it is
its illegal to keep it.
Hi richcausey - thanks for writing in - that fish was actually hook just out side the mouth as opposed to inside :) Hope you enjoyed this jigging for cod episdoe and part 2 will be aired next week
I wish i could fish saltwater!
I hope you get a chance some day to fish salt water - it's a lot of fun :)
what is the lure called? the soft plastics.
Although I do not recall the exact brand I was using, the shad are very similar to the Bass Pro Shops Squirmin Shad - 4 inch size. Good Luck :)
***** Lastly, would you recommend a spinning combo or a baitcasting combo for saltwater/freshwater
JuzSinging99 If you are going to use heavy mono or fluorocarbon (such as over 15 lbs) then the bait-caster is the way to go. if you are going to use lighter line or braided line (which is very thin already) then a spinning outfit is the way to go :)
Thanks! I can't wait to catch some halibut and other surf fish! I hope you guys make soft plastics one day because your solid baits work well! ThunderMist Plastics/Lures
:)
JuzSinging99 Perhaps some day :)
