I used to catch the Tinker Makeral in Long island sound in Connecticut with the colored surgical tube umbrella Makeral Rigs, than due to the waters getting dirty they vanished in around 1980.and I fished off a jetty.they were to fishy and bony for me so I'd freeze them, than when I went blue,Striper, or fluke fishing I'd cut chunks and it worked great.much better than Bunkers.
I used to use Sabiki rigs to jig for baby bluefish, aka 'snapper'. It was fun catching them by the bucket and then cooking them up and eating them! Haven't caught mackerel with the Sabiki rig yet, because there's no opportunity for me right now. I am a true boatless angler.
glad to see you all wearing life vests. I worried about you flipping in the water and wondered why you guys did not wear them. nice exciting video always enjoy watching.
As an FYI, there is a very easy way to unhook these fish. Simply grab the shank if the hook. Use pliers. The fish will unhook itself in about i.5 seconds. I used to fish for these commercially with rod and reel, and we had to get them off the hooks and get the rigs back down where the fish were swimming. Also, we always tried to keep a well-hooked mackerel swimming under the boat. That keeps the rest of the school around longer.
I like canned mackeral LOL! I guess the oily nature scents well for bait. Are you guys Canadian? for some reason I had thought that if not guess I thought you were often in the Canadian side of the great lakes..
I spent a lot of time in little Portugal in Toronto so lots of Olives and spices and mackeral and herring. Cheers look forward to learning more great techniques.
Great vid! Reminds me of when I went fishing for mackerel with my dad and brother. A huge school came by and everyone on the pier was catching fish. We were pulling up 4 or 5 at a time. By the end of the morning, we had filled our ice chest! Although it was just mackerel, it was one of the most fun times I've had while fishing. Very exciting!

We use ultra light tackle for mackerel so it feels like a lot bigger fish!

We did actually try for stripers for about a half hour that day with live mackerel, but no luck :)
Are those Spanish mackerel or King mackerel?
Spanish :)
What part of the Cape is this?

Why are you wearing life jackets now?
When we first went out, it was very foggy & viability was reduced, so we put our life jackets on :)
