This cast-on is a simple twisted variation of the crochet cast-on. Instead of picking up the back bar, you pick up the bar in between the chains. By twisting the chain, these end up on the back and it creates a lovely braided edge.
This cast-on was once called Chinese Waitress cast-on. However, I think this name just perpetuates stereotypes and should not be used anymore. After all, tons of other names in knitting techniques but "of course" the Chinese waitress does not deserve to be named specifically (unlike say Judy's magic cast-on). Also...I mean, why Chinese? It's not Jenny's American surprisingly stretchy bind-off either.
On top of that, by adding a descriptive name we can ensure that future generations can easily remember the name.

Your pieces of work are so perfect. I'd never imagine to be such a fan of a knitter 😅, but this is amazing. Thanks Norman, you rock!
I'll try this for my net project since seems to be quicker and a bit easier than the one I'm currently using. 😊

I like the non twisted version found it perfect for garter stitch it looks the same on each side of your work and the matching behind off too(which i did with needles but found would be easier with hook). Not sure the bind off would look as close the the cast on when using ng the twisted though.
Honestly there are many variations of this cast on. Thie is the true version. Which doesn't look like the chains are twisted, like when done with another variation and a step is skipped when doing this cast on with a crochet hook. I believe all variations are beneficial depending on the project

I'll try to do this cast-on with a crochet hook, but since I usually hold my yarn in the right hand, it makes it esay to knit this cast-on. Thanks for offering this alternative. I'd be curious to see how stretchy this cast on is compared to the orhters you presented last week.

it's only medium stretchy for me.
And yes, this is easier if you tension your yarn in the right hand :)

I’ve also heard this CO referred to recently as “double chain CO” - appears like 2 chains going in opposite directions.

yes. I think that is based on the assumptions that you are doing a double crochet chain (but you don't).

I use this cast on quite frequently, but I can never get it to look seamless in the round.

hm...well you have to graft one stitch. But i didn'T show it in this video >.

Which one is more stretchy, this one or the crochet cast-on?
