I´m from Argentina and this man was the football player who made me like the sport for the first time. May not be the best brazilian player but to me was 100% inspiration and when I started playing football, in my mind, I wanted to be Denilson.
I remember watching him for the first time in 2002 world cup final. He was introduced in to the game against Germany at the last minutes and he nearly destroyed Germany single handedly with his dribbling techniques. His very direct and can take on any player in the world.
I still remember him for this exact same reason. If I were to tell anyone how I knew denilson, it will be exactly how you've described him. I remember say these same words and arguing with a friend immediately after the final against Germany. a legend albeit a bit unknown.

A great dribbler with tricks, a turn of pace, direction and forward passing but the stage fright when in on goal is surreal. This guy couldn't finish his dinner. I've never seen someone so good at one skill and so bad at another. Unbelievable.

The South American clubs ALWAYS do well in the international cup because they are in mid-season form, but the Euro teams are still pre-season and not in competition shape. Not because they are better teams.

Brilliant dribbler who could have been one of the all-time greats but perhaps did not choose the right career path - Goes to show how important that is. Also he tended to over-do it, hogged the ball a bit too much when a simple pass may have done. His shooting at goal also left a bit to be desired. Great player none-the-less.
I remember Brazil used to sub in Denilson at the end of sure win game to dribble in the corner to waste time. The other team would try so hard to get the ball of Denilson but usually ended up with a corner against their own goal or foul Denilson to give Brazil a free kick.

I feel like in a modern offense that maintains spacing and moves together, he could have been so much more, but back in the day, he was dropping defenders left and right, but his fellow teammates were too busy watching him dribble, too. So, sure, he'd evade like 7 tackles, but there'd be no teammate to do anything about it when the 8th tackle worked.

He had serious knee injuries as well which made him shorten his career,he retired at 31. He was consistent when he was healthy.
