I don't know why but this song always gives me the chills, especially when the men start singing, i just start thinking about all those men representing the lost voices of war, crying out for home, warmth and a nice bed to sleep in.
Dear Lord and Father of mankind, Forgive our foolish ways! Re-clothe us in our rightful mind, In purer lives thy service find, In deeper reverence praise. In simple trust like theirs who heard, Beside the Syrian sea, The gracious calling of the Lord, Let us, like them, without a word Rise up and follow thee. O Sabbath rest by Galilee! O calm of hills above, Where Jesus knelt to share with thee The silence of eternity, Interpreted by love! Drop thy still dews of quietness, Till all our strivings cease; Take from our souls the strain and stress, And let our ordered lives confess The beauty of thy peace. Breathe through the heats of our desire Thy coolness and thy balm; Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still small voice of calm!
Atonement is one of my favourite films. It's so touching and sad and dramatic... For me this film (and also the book) is like a treasure. Dario Marianelli emphasizes this even more with his absolutely divine music!
+Mike Trevor well if you want people to actually listen to you and act on what you say, treat them with respect. And there's no need to stereotype things, yes I may be a girl but what does that have to do with anything? Or are you going to say because I'm a girl I'm a wimp and too weak? If so, then you seriously need to learn how to act properly around people.
+Mike Trevor yeah yeah whatever, keep denying that what you're saying is wrong because you obviously can't argue you with reason. Also I quite frankly can't be bothered to reply to ignorant people like yourself anymore so you can reply all you want, because I won't be listening. I hope you learn some manners and how to treat people respectively.
This movie is very underrated and so patriotic somehow, I cry everytime I listen to this piece and that scene plays in my mind.. the one with the British Soldiers standing on the coast of France singing and gazing towards where their home is, England .. wishing to be at home with their famillies, some of them very ill and injured, some will never to see their home again.... why this film really gets me .. because this is life, this is ..sadly. Nothing good and beautiful ever last, but there is plenty of pain, deaths and evil.
Drop thy still dews of quietness, Till all our strivings cease; Take from our souls the strain and stress, And let our ordered lives confess The beauty of thy peace. The beauty of thy peace. Breathe through the heats of our desire Thy coolness and thy balm; Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still small voice of calm! O still small voice of calm!
Greetings from England Anna, the lyrics are from the hymn Dear Lord And Father Of Mankind. I'm sure they would have had a lot of meaning to your father and both of my WW2 veteran grandfathers.
I was walking the beach of the Netherlands one autumn day and whilst the strait of Dover blew it's exhale of the ocean's churning heart, I found myself transported into the trying hands of the people who have been through so much strife and anguish through the existence of humanity. This is not only seen in the Europeans, but in humanities strive to progress and live a fruitful life. I was shifting the sands with my feet on that brisk November day and my mind wandered into the future of humanity. I saw so many more trying times that lay ahead yet was comforted with the undeniable fact that something celestial would come of it. I was given the inspiring hope of those waiting at Dunkirk...that through disaster...comes yet another reason to never give up in having hope for a brighter future.
Some wounds go too deep. Briony's actions scarred both the lives of those around her and more deeply her own. As difficult as it may be for some, I feel deeply for Briony. Only in her dying lonely days does the full loss of humanity weigh on her shoulders. To die knowing what devastation you left on yourself on those around you and yet have a truly repentant heart that can never receive absolution...it's just tragic.
This song is so much better in my opinion that most versions of the hymn that are online. I wish they had it in a full version of the hymn covered. The lyrics is marvelous.
So much given by so few for so many. Impossible to listen without breaking up. Counter harmonies so intricate and delicate. Use this piece of beautiful music to thank those you can't ever thank in person. Unbelievably beautiful. No i'm not crying I have a a memory in my eye.
The most beautiful and heartfelt piece on the soundtrack. The Dunkirk was one of the amazing scenes I have ever seen. I feel for Robbie here, because he wishes Cecilia was in his arms, and he's reminded of her everywhere but yet she is so far away. One of my favorite movies.
One of the saddest films I've ever seen. I was devastated at the end and found myself sobbing. So many lives lost and changed. The music is so beautiful and sad.
This music is phenomenal, and the men singing the hymn is extraordinary, it makes me feel so sad for all the people that sacrificed their lives. R.I.P xx
Beautiful and bittersweet. Mariennelli won an Oscar for this the labor of love. The entire soundtrack is worth owning. Even then, when I listen to this particular hymn it brings tears. Exquisite soundtrack, haunting music. Lovely.
This scene is devastating. A hymn to our apocalyptic race. The phantom ferris wheel keeping time - the surf flowing over murdered horses - the voices of the hopeless - and the most powerful of all - James McAvoy's face - a mirror that reflects the wretchedness of both the war and human nature. His eyes confused at the betrayal - both by people and the world.
War has no poetry. It cracks open the oceans of memory that hold lives together. No one survives the slaughter of innocents. Every rip on the skin of my brother, is a tear on my own body. No one searches for glory, least of all a glory of annihilation. The sacred pain of these bodies inside the machine is the only poetry here. The stories of letters that were carried by the lost wind, carried far away from the familiarity of home, into a breach that exists to consume us all. Our world today feels this way again. As angry children rule big pieces of land and fight over histories and futures, with the lives of others.
This song makes me feel sad yet grateful for all the soldiers who scarified their lifes in war not only during XX's century but throughout history. because without them we wouldn't be listening to this beautiful song together, so a far from each other yet close. God bless you all
The movie is very well made, it inspires me greatly. The shot of the camera with the view of the vast beach, very dramatic. This movie is an outstanding film.
This song reminds me of my University sweetheart. Broke-up with her after graduation for a job opportunity abroad. Still feel shamed about the decision I made.This song makes me sad each time I listen to it because I associate the separation & distance between the two protagonists with my own.. it also reminds me of what was true love then..
This song was the most touching with the utter feeling of hopelessness and despair it invokes at first. Then it slowly tends to the small ember of hope that remains, bringing it back to life, only to end all too quickly.
:) just saw it today. I love James McAvoy and I think him as Robbie was perfect. I think this movie was perfect, it had a little of everything, and it had a message behind it.
What a powerfull movie!!! If you see this movie at different stages of you life you realize different meanings and different ways of understanding the love!
I watched the movie yesterday. It was so moving, especially in the part when this track was played. I already loved to listen to it, before I saw "Atonement". This song was enough to give Oscar to Dario Marianelli.

god and father of mankind...words hymn .... when the 350-000 were lifted from DUNKIRK my father was still fighting down near ARAS FRANCE not far from LENS anywho on the 4th june 1940 he was taken P.O.W. and spent the next 4/5 yeares as a slave labourer in the notorious STALAG 8B LAMSDORF SOUTH WEST POLAND .. never truly liberated as in Jan 1945 the German guards used the P.O.W`s as human shields as they marched west away from the soviets and into the hands of the U.S.A. troops ..

When I think that Britain endured what was depicted using this music and that great scene in the movie and the Battle of Britain and emerged victorious at the end of the war it blows my mind.
I don’t know why most people are listening to rap and hip-hop when they could be listening to this. Crazy! 😂 (I joke of course - everybody’s different)

+tom fiddleston wow you actuallyperfectly captured the essence of such a scene.. bravo fellow earthling

I searched on youtube The Book and didnt find nothing, is it The Book Thief that you are refering too? I would like to see it too.
killaomix No, with the book I meant the book of the film. It's also called "Atonement" :)
I know it's corny, but this song seriously awakens something deep inside my soul. It's just so hauntingly beautiful.
+Mike Trevor that is no way to talk to someone. Learn some manners and think before you start to insult people.
+Mike Trevor well if you want people to actually listen to you and act on what you say, treat them with respect. Best scene in the film.
Definitely. I can't even describe how I feel when I watch this scene.
CrownImperial1920 Yep. I nearly cried the first time I saw it.
One of the best scenes in ANY film.

All those soldiers should have been dead if Hitler only gave the order to attack... but he didn't...
This track always makes me cry. 😪
es estraño, como si fuera un recuerdo...

Beautiful words. Thank you.
Just hearing it makes me sob. We watched it again today. For some reason, this movie just slays me.
1:50 Goosebumps, tingles and everything else.

dude I feel your pain so much...
I tried to look for lyrics on google... they seem to be missing the first most important part...

The entire soundtrack to the film is excellent. this particular piece I find so moving, words fail me.
I fought abroad with her majestys forces and this song alone sometimes kept me going.. beautiful!
One of the saddest films I've ever seen. I was devastated at the end and found myself sobbing. So many lives lost and changed. The music is so beautiful and sad.
i think that this is better track ever... of the soundtracks history
BEAUTIFUL - WONDERFUL - MAGIC ...

The most emotional song I've ever heard in my whole life.

A piece of art...

An elegy for hope at a moment of despair

Rey Cruz Sadly if there was a way to avoid conflict I think we would know about it

😢💔
heartbreaking film when I first saw it I was stood in the ladies toilets after just crying my eyes out.
There has never been any song as moving nor as beautiful as this one. I feel no less moved every time I hear it.
This is something I'd sing before I die, or know danger is around the corner. God, I want to cry.
There's something about 1:50-1:53 moves me sooo much, the way the music kinda changes SO AMAZING goshh
Robbie and Cecilia forever...
I almost can't believe how beautiful this is.
Elegy for Dunkirk and variation 15 from Hans Zimmer's Dunkirk are my top 2 songs now!
This music it's beyond words....just awesome... pure.!!!! amazing amazing amazing!!!!
Beautiful score
This song was the most touching with the utter feeling of hopelessness and despair it invokes at first. Then it slowly tends to the small ember of hope that remains, bringing it back to life, only to end all too quickly.
I feel for those poor boys trapped on the beach at Dunkirk, dying in scores. This seems a small, transient salve for their pain.
it's good to know that i'm not the only person who is deeply affected by music as beautiful as this!
:) just saw it today. I love James McAvoy and I think him as Robbie was perfect. I think this movie was perfect, it had a little of everything, and it had a message behind it.
The besto of the movie. So sad and melancholy, yet solemn and great track for an excellent film. Thanks Dario
Our grandparents... the greatest generation

I Love this song.
Drop thy still dews of quietness,
Till all our strivings cease;
Take from our souls the strain and stress,
And let our ordered lives confess
The beauty of thy peace. x2
Breathe through the heats of our desire
Thy coolness and thy balm;
Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire,
O still small voice of calm x2
This movie has a separate corner in my heart!
Feels like it's somehow relatable to me
It's my favourite movie ever
i think i have posted before but, i just have to come back and listen to it every day,it is a very powerful and understandable song.
'Dear Lord and Father of Mankind' was always a favorite hymn of mine when growing up. It was painful to hear it in this soundtrack.
What a beautiful, perfect movie!!
How in the world can you possibly dislike such a masterpiece?
luv the book, the movie...everything about it!
Atonement would be halve the movie without its utterly masterful soundtrack.
Man, this made me want to cry. It's a really powerful piece.
Drop Thy still dews of quietness,
Till all our strivings cease;
Take from our souls the strain and stress,
And let our ordered lives confess
The beauty of Thy peace.
Breathe through the heats of our desire
Thy coolness and Thy balm;
Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire,
O still, small voice of calm!
Just amazing. No other words.
well that is really fucking good and touching, I loved it, made me cry
this scene captured the fear and chaos of Dunkirk very well.
Simply fantastic.
No matter how many times I listen to this I always tear up when the soldiers start singing
Find you, love you, marry you and live without shame
such an exquisite film, beautiful music
Just beautiful!
Where do the doomed love stories go ? Such intensity slowly vaporized into the time endless passing.
Great scene in the movie, something about the scene that makes me think he was in limbo?
Anthony Lopez yes he's dying of septicaemia and hallucinating.
