  • Using batter frame guides makes it possible to create dry stone walls that are perfectly true. This video shows an example of this on a complex project that had many wallers working.

    1:53 WOW! That herringbone section set in the wall is just stunning! And the wall itself is beautiful too. So nice to see.

    Great vid ! Stone can be so 'complex' - I'd be afraid of bumping into all those pole guides and knocking them out of true !

      It takes getting used to using frames, knowing where to put them so they will be least in the way is part of it. Having good equipment operators is key. Overall though it speeds up the build a lot, and makes achieving a high level of accuracy possible with a big crew. If a rebar frame does get hit, it can just be bent back too.

    no morter all i can think of is someone pulling out one small stone and it topples..

    • @thestonetrust500
      @thestonetrust500 3 года назад +6

      Margo, walls like this stay together because of how they are stacked. This is a very well documented procedure, and you can find out more at thestonetrust.org. Each stone is held in place by the weight of those above causing a huge amount of friction. There are no loose stones to pull out. Also remember mortar is not a good glue. It is a space filler and that is how it should be thought of. Using it as glue will reduce the lifespan of stone work. A well built dry stone wall will usually outlast a poorly built mortared wall, and in some case outlast even a well built mortared wall.

      @@thestonetrust500 how come then that no building is built with dry stack technique? They all are mortared. I only see low retaining walls and low property walls done in dry stack.

    That wall will be there long after the house has rotted and melted back into the earth...
