Big C/Lotus = for daily shopping, groceries
Tops = for higher quality groceries

Many food vendors and small restaurants get their raw ingredients and seasonings at Makro. That's why the portions are bigger, because it's not really for household use unless you have a big family. And, yes, Aro is Makro's own brand.

I’m living in Chiang Mai and my family of four (2 adults / 2 kids), spend around 4,500 THB per week at Makro. I find Makro fresher, cheaper and better selection than Big C. We were Costco shoppers in the states, so Makro is our go to shop.

to answer your Q, i started living a minimal, nomadic life after my dad passed away last year. sold off nearly all my belongings, and am squatting in a friend's house right now. so i don't do much grocery shopping because i don't cook. just the occasional toiletries and bread. cheap.

Makro is a wholesaler. You have to buy in packs or lots, which makes the unit price cheaper than other stores. There are 2 other stores that go in the same direction: Go Wholesale, a member of Central Group, and BigC, but BigC is a hybrid between modern trade and wholesale, so it depends on the branch you buy from. Lotus is a modern trade store of CP Group, which is the same owner as Makro. As for Foodland, Villa Market, Maxvalue(AEON is owner same 7-11 in Japan), Top, these focus on imported products from overseas, so there will be more options of foreign products than other stores. As for Central, The Mall, Seacon, Robinson these are super malls(Department store) that focus more on lifestyle than shopping, so the price of the products will be more expensive. As for Paragon, Emporium, Emquartier, Em Sphere, Siam Paragon, Central world, Mega Bangna, these are luxury lifestyle stores that sell iconic items and services.

Guys!!! Great shopping experience. Y'all be be cooking and eating at home for a month after today. I want to answer your questions backwards O.K.? First of all, Big-C is a hypermarket, with supposedly everything in it, although I think automotive stuff seems a bit lacking. Store decoration is much better than Makro, as well as better grade items 'coz they don't see themselves as a Cash 'n Carry (wholesale) store. In terms of shopping, I usually shop at Lotus for convenience being on the way back from my daughter's school. I would spend around 3K Baht per major visit and do this 3 times a month. So say around USD300 per month for food and related items for my family. This clip was fun. I think shopping for items makes fun videos to watch, if you spend a little more time checking the quality of items and make references to different outlets. Cheers guys!!!

please don't forget that millions of Thai workers receive a daily wage of just 340 TB...the prices are very expensive for them......some time ago I spoke to a young man who was butchering chickens...always from midnight to 6 a.m., 7 days a week...he only got 100 TB per night...I asked why don't you ask for more...his answer was I can't...they'll fire me...there are enough others who work for that
I asked how can you survive....

Thai people buy things mostly because of convenience. Therefore, the products sell well everywhere. Wherever it is convenient, they buy there.
Makro is a wholesale market, so the prices are cheaper. Most buyers buy to resell or buy to cook and sell rather than to eat themselves.
And will focus on selling in large quantities per 1 pack, so it can be seen that there will be fewer products in separate packs and there will be more items packed per pack than anywhere else.
If you observe carefully, each shopping mall or market will have a specific group that mainly buys, and each shopping mall or market will have its own unique characteristics, some things have them, some things don't.
And if you observe the processed products carefully, you will see that the price is the same no matter where you buy them because the products are controlled and cannot be sold above the price, which is controlled by the manufacturer and the Thai government to sell at this price only.
Department stores have separate grades. If you want foreign products or foreign ingredients, go to a more luxurious department store. Or if you want products with different grades, even if they are the same brand, the quality will be very different if separated. For example, Siam Paragon, Emquartier, Central World will have more imported ingredients than normal department stores like Makro, Big-C, or Lotus.
