  • A lot of you have been asking about Scruffy, and so here's a quick update! Sarah and I decided to take Scruffy for a quick weekend of camping, with a total round trip of about 140 miles. Doing this has uncovered a few bugs we need to iron out before going anywhere far away.

    The things I like in a video:
    - A story is told, I don't really care what the story is about but it's got to be told
    - Video length is 5 to 15 minutes. For some reason anything longer than 15 feels like too much of a commitment
    - Finally relatable. If you got all the tools and doing everything the right way all the time, then I don't feel a part of it. I want DIY not pro
    Just my 2 cents and this style of video fits into that so more of it will be good. The old style also mostly fits into that, so more that will also be good.

    Hey bud, a lot of times with older vehicles like that, it's easier to swap the entire rear axle with a decent salvage axle. Doing it that way, you wouldn't have to worry about setting the lash or anything. Just pop the cover off at the salvage yard and check to see if the fluid is clean and metal free. You could pull an LSD axle assembly and swap it right in that way.

    I had the same issue Gen 1 4.3 where it seemed like a fuel problem yet there was fuel during certain points of the test but the problem persisted and when we finally changed the fuel pump everything wormed well right away. PS... I also use a marine grade power interrupter Dual batt switch to isolate the battery for longer term parking purposes. That is a must for any Astro Safari, especially gen 1 where voltage sapping mysteries are incurable.

    If the fluid change in the rear diff doesn't do the trick and you find that you have to rebuild the gears, you should consider installing a locker. It could be more cost effective than a whole new rearend in the longrun. Love these van build update vids esp if camping and bikes are involved!

    The production quality was on point! Awesome video. Definitely like this 'format' although for riding videos I wouldn't mind it hitting 15 mins, but probably not much more than that. The story was easy to follow and the B roll was timed well, such as the dogs looking at the camera when mentioned. Obviously, I'm not a professional video producer so take that with a grain of salt but I think that was a pretty damn good video.

  • @pauld1848
    @pauld1848 3 года назад

    I just rebuilt the rear end of my F-150 last year due to excessive noise. It needed a pinion bearing and bearing races. You seem like you could do it if you have access to a heavy duty impact gun (for the crush sleeve) and some places to rent tools. It took me about 12 hours and some thinking on my feet to accomplish.

    • @pauld1848
      @pauld1848 3 года назад

      Also, as soon as you mentioned that it wasn’t running right, I was practically yelling at you to replace the fuel pump. A super common issue on this era GM’s.

    This was great content

  • @tommyr95
    @tommyr95 3 года назад +1

    Hey man, a couple things about the rear end of the truck. If it moans only on turns, it could be that you have a limited slip and, if it's a clutch style, you may just need friction modifier. If the noise is only on-power, off-power, or steady cruising, it could be bearings or a worn out ring and pinion. If you need significant rear end work like gears or a rebuild, it'd be easier and MUCH cheaper to get an entire rear axle (yes, preferably with a limited slip) and simply replace it. Good luck and feel free to message me if you want to discuss in more detail. Cheers!

    • @TheShredist
      @TheShredist  3 года назад

      The noise comes from cruising under load. Most noticeable going freeway speeds up a grade. My assumption was a ring and pinion? I'd love to throw a complete rear end in there like a g80, but I honestly don't want to use more junkyard finds for drivetrain pieces, and I'm not sure where to source a rebuilt piece thats not astronomical. Any suggestions?

    • @tommyr95
      @tommyr95 3 года назад

      @@TheShredist Well, it could be a bearing or ring/pinion in my experience. The most common failure I see is the pinion bearing. Did you pull the yoke when you swap the t-case? If so, the nut securing the yoke to the pinion shaft may be loose. It's often intended to be used just once, however, ample application of red Loctite can have them hold fine for a long time. Check the yoke to see if the yoke or pinion nut are loose and maybe pull the front bearing and see if it seems okay. You can do all of this without removing the diff cover.
      If you want a limited slip, chances are the carrier will need to be swapped, meaning you'd need to set the backlash. If you've never done it, the risk for causing a problem is fairly high, IMO. Other options would be a luchbox locker like a Lock Right or Aussie Locker. That's more aggressive than you likely want or need, but the road manners would be decent and it wouldn't require setting backlash, pinion depth, etc.
      Hope this helped a bit. Any questions, let me know. Good luck!

    • @TheShredist
      @TheShredist  3 года назад +1

      @@tommyr95 I didn't remove the yoke, but I'll definitely check if that bolt is loose at all. I planned on changing gear oil this week on it seeing its probably original and the van had a hard life before I got it. Maybe I'll change the front bearing while I'm in there. My fear is if there's noise coming from the rear, that the damage has already been done.
      Setting the backlash and all that is definitely what I have very low confidence in doing. I know I can swap the parts, its getting the clearances right so it doesn't blow up 100 miles down the road I'm not sure about!

    • @TheShredist
      @TheShredist  3 года назад

      Also one question since you seem more knowledge than me in this dept haha. Would a bad rear diff bearing cause vibration similar to an out of balance tire going 60mph+?

    • @tommyr95
      @tommyr95 3 года назад

      @@TheShredist Yep, that's the concern...a failure a few hundred miles from home! Swap the bearing as it's cheap and when you pull the diff cover to drain it, thoroughly clean everything and look for any odd wear on the teeth. Honestly, I don't think changing the fluid will fix it, but the bearing and/or tightening the pinion nut could certainly address it. And yeah, swapping the fluid is rarely a bad idea.

  • @TehEkHo
    @TehEkHo 3 года назад

    Don't be shy about touching the diff in scruffy dude, you're mechanically minded enough to be able to understand what is going on, would be cool to watch you MacGyver your way around replacing bearings and setting up backlash.
