"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.
Many people ask me where I am from and where I film my projects. I am from Northern Ontario, Canada, and live in an area where off-grinding is easy because I have lots of land to build on and experiment with different buildings and materials. Everything I do is to try to be more self reliant, and to depend less on others. But that doesn't mean I don't like working together with other people on projects. Knowing people who have skills is part of being self reliant, and trading skills is a great way to get more things done! Развлечения
Thank you for allowing us to come along on your adventures
You will probably want a window. It might look really nice to have a bay window with a bench seat added to the most picturesque side. I could easily imagine curling up with a good book reading watching the snow fall in the tiny little cabin.
It is amazing how you manage to make amazing content/videos endlessly.
Love the videos, information and adventures you have! Always a great watch
Once again your vision has knocked my (matching) socks off. I'm totally in awe!
That door is just lovely!
Those stairs look awesome! Great build, Kevin!
Man, you're killing that build. The door turned out beautifully, spray foam insulation, spool stairway. Wow! Can't wait to see the full picture. Love what you're doing 😊
This is your best project yet!!!!
I'm so impressed by how you have progressed to this level. This is crazy good!
Door came out amazing man
That spindle cutting jig works like a handheld lathe. Awesome
Great job on that cool looking door
Great modification on the ‘pencil sharpener’!
love love LOVE the stairs 👏
They pleasantly surprised me too.
I think you are freaking AMAZING!
Cool stairs!!!
Great work . I also like the saw tool.
Cool door! Would’ve liked to see the window open or be a Dutch door for such a small building, though.
Your daughter will love all the little "forts" or "playhouses", depending on her perspective, you're building. I don't know how kids play these days, but we would have loved any one of these as "base" for our childhood antics. The hideout in the woods to get away from the 'rents (although they kicked us out every day until supper and then again until dark, so they were waaaaay ahead of us. I figure, like most dads, that if you didn't do this for economic reasons you wouldn't have time to spend on these projects. A bonus for your clan.
As always! Absolutely loved this episode! As I’m sure we all love watching all your episodes! Keep up the awesome content!!!
Really good steps.
a perfect start to the weekend. Thanks for the great content!
Glad you enjoy it!
That door is truly made for a castle! ❤🧡❤️🧡❤️
Your appreciation for beautifully engineered tools helps me feel better about my own admiration for them. There are useful tools, and then there are tools that are also amazingly well designed works of art.
Wow, I am impressed! Thank you for doing this.
I love this door! As you build, you add a little of each build into your next one.
You definitely love the challenge of figuring all this stuff out with these builds, and I love watching.
Love this build dude. These are the best builds and the craftsmanship is damn cool and good.
I've watched every episode you've made and always admired your uniqueness when designing or building something. Ie the cube, the glass house chapel or sauna. I'll tell you what, though, not only is this castle beautiful, but that door alone is a work of art. I know you're good at doing recessed ceilings like in the cube, but to build a door that is curved and make it fit exactly like it should was super impressive. Not to mention how great the door looks to begin with. Thanks for sharing your life with us. I, for one, appreciate it.
I appreciate your comment! Thank you.
AWESOME STEPS🎉
Beautiful! Very fantasy like and perfect for a build in the middle of a forest.
Fascinating watching you work. Your creativity and skill is inspiring. 👏👏👏
Another cool build always enjoy the content never disappointed. Have a good day and enjoy your weekend stay safe Jimmy from North Attleboro Massachusetts
absolutely beautiful work
looking good!
plunge router tip is a winner!
Love your projects. Brain feels so juiced up observing your creativity. Encouraging.
Much gratitude.

I love your mini chainsaw! I have a 4 inch one! Works great!
You make the coolest buildings! Love it!
Seriously the most unique!!
Love it ❤
Glad you like them!
That drill bit looked pretty cool.. I'm gonna say it takes under a minute 30 seconds to make one..n about 15 to 20 minutes to make all of em
Wow!!! what a great video Kevin!
Great job Kevin!
I love the stair design!
love all your videos man you made another awesome build !!!! the circle thing or theme is awesome by the way squares juss dont have the same feng shui blessings to you and your family Stay Golden Kevin ! i mean Modern Self Reliance !
I love watching what you will come up with next
Great work on the door 👍
I have one of the mini chain saws…….so perfect for a woman or small hands or small jobs. Best thing ever!
Spray foam is great until you want to do a remodel or make changes in the future!
The tree sharpener, aka tenon jig, is cool. If I were to build a tiny home, I would use it to do the same thing. I'm not sure how many uses it has. I suppose I will have to look it up.
You have the coolest tools!
Omg this is outstanding! You are so creative!
Thank you!
Love the curves in general and the door in particular. The height of the roof is awesome. I do wish that rather than only building on the spool you had cut it in half and used the halves on either end of an eight foot square centre section to make a more usable space. You could then still have the curved door set into one end for the entrance but the other end could have a nice curved window or series of windows and a bench/seat to sit at and look out with the centre section as the practical living section. Maybe if another spool comes up that could be the next section of the castle build :)
Beautiful door
Such a wonderful project! The door is perfect and your daughter is going to feel so special playing in that. Awesome job👏👏👏
Hi Rachael!
What a fantastic job😊
Looks like an interesting outhouse.
We need more spider hole!
Love the door
That drill bit is amazing 🤩
Top notch professional work 💯💪
Your door is very cool!!
Love all the content.
Good morning from Minnesota USA! Great job on the door!
Thank you!
need a video of cool quirky tools
Outstanding. This is really turning into a VERY livable looking building. I’m looking forward to the inside finishes and I hope that you might find some way to add a window/porthole in the loft area. Are you going to spray foam the door? I’m guessing you could heat this place with a candle 😁. Thanks for sharing and your lovely wife visit was just an added bonus!
that big pencil sharpener makes some great kindling
Looks awesome.
The Kevin Show 🔥👏👏
Love the random, apple? In the beginning.🤣
Looks amazing!! Love it! The stairs are so creatively unique. Great job Kevin and thanks for sharing. Nice to see Rachael pop in too 😊 I’ve shared this
Nice door!
Cone skylight will be good for observations
for the foam removal there is a rufly 2 foot sawzall blade that is real flexible. works good to remove excess foam.
That would be unruly in there.
I really like the stairs you may need to put some sealer on them those seem to rot out pretty quickly, I look forward to your episode every Saturday morning, I’m a bit late watching pheasant season has started here had to go get my limit first thing.
🤩😍🤩💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖👏🏾 So cool.
Awesome build. I need to get one of those giant pencil sharpeners 🐸🍺🔪🔥
love the door great work
The door ❤😊
Thats cool
I’m not sure why your channel is so entertaining, but it is. It is not like I ever plan to build crazy buildings or caves.
Why not cover the ceiling of this project with a fabric that could be tacked to the rafters in a loose designer style.
A-Mazing
Percolation
Cool build Kevin! Happy Halloween!
Cool😎🌵
ROTFL. It doesn't mean I am a corporate schill just means I like free stuff! Lol 😂😅 He ain't wrong free stuff is the best stuff.
OUTSTANDING JOB. Just wish you could do more videos
👍
👍👍👍👍👍
once people realize that spray foam is structural then we will save lumber because 24 or maybe 36 on center will be the norm / because as you said you can take a cardboard house and spray foam and you won't need vapor barrier just an air exchanger because it will be so air tight / also you cam do a wall with 2x6 but stager every 24 with 2x4 one in and next out to stop thermal bridging in the wall and the spray foam does the rest
What is the data on off gassing with the stuff?
google it@@Serendipity-Divine
Beautiful door and a great tip regarding router depth gauge settings. Was there a handle on 5e outside of the door or will that detail be in episode #3 ? Great seeing Rachel again.!
Wishing you and your family a blessed weekend filled with great weather and restful evenings. Peace brother
I'm always looking for the perfect piece for a handle... I didn't find it this time.
@@ModernSelfReliance Perhaps there is an antler in your forest future. Peace brother
Spiral? It is a straight rise made of circles. Seeing you go up and down and seeing that you had so much surface available, I would had made each tread deeper.
It is so cool are you going to add light
A bit challenging but for the floor you could use your mill and square up some different sizes of logs then cut cookies and arrange in different sizes then there won’t be any gaps to fill in. Around the wall will be the most difficult of course. Oh and my guess is it took you about two hours to do your spinals
Is there any products out there that you can parge directly over the foam with good adhesion?
That pencil sharpener is pretty slick, have a link for it? 34 minutes if you weren't slacking..🤣🤣
Hopefully a window or 2 in the works..
Keep enjoying life brother.. Good stuff as always..👍👍
12:24 for the tenons. Gonna Sheetrock the cone I think.
When using the tendon cutter, you suggested to use a bench vise as well.... what you FORGOT to mention, is you NEED a package of Oreo's also!!! Yuppers, we saw them... and now I want Oreo's. 😔😂🤣🤷🏻♂️
Birthday Cake variety
@@ModernSelfReliance I like the chocolate and espresso ones myself, but I'm not too picky when it comes to them!
Awesome projects brotha ✌️
🎃
Cool build! Why are you a makita fan?
That little chainsaw is cool, an easy one-handed tool. Didn’t mean to rhyme. I’d be friggin thrilled if companies were sending me tools to review! But that pencil sharpener is so simple and awesome! From the time you got going I’d say an hour.
🪵 I haven’t heard “we aren’t building a piano” in a while 😆 I do love the cookies, the door itself is great, a nice challenge. The cookie grout sounds like a pain if you use spray adhesive, I’d water down (and maybe tint) wood glue and syringe it between cookies, then spread the sand. Spray adhesive often relies on pressure applied to assist in sticking.
I’ve always heard in carpentry/building that “curves are twice the price” and I understand it, but being THE builder, do what ya want! The stairs are cool, another interesting challenge.
I’m excited to see more, and what awesome details get added! I do hope there’s a light feature built in to the ceiling/walls like stars!
i am GLAD YOU ARE HONEST
Great looking door but you made a critical mistake by leaving it hollow and not stuffing it full of insulation
I haven't finished the inside. Just worked on the outside today.
I would have layed 2x4 or better2x6 on the thing first, overhanging 12 inches , so you get that much more square footage to put 2 beds,,,..the Next one
