    8D feels like that irritating stage of a flight or a car journey where your ears are *nearly* popping but not quite, and you wish they'd just cross the line and get it over with so you can take a swig of a drink and reset.

    This sounds like ‘Holophonic Sound’, a technique where a orb shaped 360 degrees microphone or set of mics picks up the sound in the 3D space and then turns it into an algorithm and the brain interprets the spacial placement and recreates it. It’s been around for almost 30 years, there were classic examples available in the 90s on the internet of a box of matches being shaken around your head, a bottle being opened etc. I think this is just an example of where the technology is where that effect can now be digitally recreated using purely algorithms and it recreates the movement of audio in space through advanced volume, panning and phase calibrations. But it’s eerily convincing, I don’t play computer games but I can imagine that’s a place it could really take off.

      This isn't new to gaming.. i can remember buying dedicated soundcards back in the 90ties who calculated dynamic reverb, echoes, sound occlusion and stuff like that and output it for headphones in a way that simulated positional sound. 3D audio rendering in games was a thing for a while.
      I don't know if that's still done today of it game companies just gave up and pre-processed all sound. If it's done, they probably just render it on the GPU..

    Hey, that's a lekker chill out track man. CNC machines can move in 6D by adding Pitch, Yaw and Tilt to up/down, left/right, front/back. And some scientists talk about more than 6 dimensions by having a cube within a cube (sort of a tesseract), and light casting a shadow of the smaller cube within the larger cube. If you had to apply this to audio your Cube could be: Stereo Width(Left/Right), Bass to Treble(Up/Down), Reverb and high cut(front/back), then you could have the equivalent of Yaw, Pitch and Tilt by somehow turning the first three axes. Maybe they assume that the first 6 dimensions can be achieved simply by movement on, or tilting of the first three axes. Then you would need your mix somehow put into a larger space than what it originally occupied. Maybe they are recording the stereo speakers of a finished mix, thereby putting the first mix into a larger space, and applying more effects. I am just guessing now. It is intriguing, but a bit of a gimmick. Because like you said, what practical function could it have in a club?

    • @DashGlitch
      @DashGlitch  4 года назад

      Thanks man, adding pitch and yaw makes a 2D plane into a 3D one tho, and theoretical physicists talk about dimensions beyond the third and potential of time being the fourth, they’re not scientists as in finding the truths, they’re hypothesizing theories 😃

    1. Why all the hate in comments towards something unique? 2. Didn’t this “remix” serve as an example/demo of the capabilities, not necessarily what a final released product would sound like? 3. Not sure what all of your expensive headphones and earbuds sound like, but using the oem iPhone earbuds I can hear/sense the sound moving left right, backward forward, and up down. As if there was a source circling a perpendicular plane around my head at the same circling horizontally. The recreation attempt in the video didn’t even come close to the spatial experience of the “remix”. 4. If you’re all so smart and expert level producers, the please recreate and post your results before you dismiss it. I’m not saying it’s 8D, but it certainly has characteristics that I’ve never heard or seen anywhere else. I couldn’t do it...I’d love to know how though! Imagine a pad, or solo instrument, or chord progression rotating in that space through a song. In years to come, with or without VR, venues will be able to reproduce this type of technology and you will be able to hear what the artists/engineers intended in an incredibly immersive environment. I hope I’m still alive when that time is upon us to experience it!

    i saw that Reaper has this library that works very well in creating/mixing 3d sounds (360º audio),
    called ambisonic toolkit
    ( www.ambisonictoolkit.net/ )
    and it seems to me that it is too very adaptable to make mixes 5.1, 7.1, among others

    • @DashGlitch
      @DashGlitch  4 года назад +1

      Yup Cubase has ambisonic stuff too, but it’s very specific to what you’re listening on 👌 it won’t work on regular stereo

  •  4 года назад

    It uses a thing called binaural panning. Mimics the filtering of our head and ears with HRTF filters (Head related transfer function). The 8D name is stupid. Also this is made to be used on headphones and not on speakers

    Well glad I cought the video bevore Billy Elish's army of bots are gonna snatch it from the net or put 100 midrolls on it (; Just a somewhat related observation Well I had the opportunity to hear Suzanne Ciani once and u know it was good ole quadrophonics, that's her thing, age old old tech. But it added sooooo much depths and expressiveness, humans perceiving true 3d audio very very differently than 2 speaker stereo... there is something to it you wouldn't expect until you hear it.

    • @DashGlitch
      @DashGlitch  4 года назад +1

      Yes I agree, but you would need 4 speakers to experience quadraphonic, I get there are systems with head tracking etc to emulate this kind of thing - but it's still within the 3 dimensional realm :)

  • @olijomusic2481
    @olijomusic2481 4 года назад +1

    Nothing that special. Just some HRTF (head related transfer function) implementation. Basically just some processing to add directional ques to the audio signal. ITD (interaural time difference) and ILD (interaural level difference) plus some filtering caused by auricles. Additionally, there is the room simulation reverb thing. Probably made with the free sennheiser plugin (I don't remember the name, AMBEO Orbit or something). Nothing that revolutionary.
    If you wanted to make something like that yourself, you should use some HRTF based filtering to make it sound a little different in the front and back sides.
    HRTF is often measured by placing a dummy head or a human subject on an anechoic chamber. Small microphones are placed in both ears. Then a frequency response measurement is performed for certain amount of different directions.

    • @jimipatalano1094
      @jimipatalano1094 4 года назад

      The whole concept made me wonder if HRTF was involved as well.
      Csound (free) lets you process music with HRTF algorithms as well

    • @FrankLorenz23
      @FrankLorenz23 4 года назад

      yes, sounds like HRTF processing. It‘s funny they claim to do 8D audio but do not even try to position the sound source in the 3rd dimension. So they probably use a plugin that is not capable of doing this.

    8D audio for music is useless.. no point of panning the whole track (especially the bass part).. For games or VR apps it could be usefull.. On the other hand, for music the Ambisonics (*360 degrees audio) is nice and has a better effect on the spatial manipulation..

  • @kykep
    @kykep 4 года назад

    I guess you don't exactly understand the mathematical notion of dimension and understand under the word "dimension" a "spatial dimension" or "sense dimension" and try to apply to that track, which is wrong. The super fat 8D call is of course totally ridiculous and made you think about it, but it means nothing else than adding few automation parameters, as you've shown. This of course does not sound so fat and advanced like 8D sound :-D

    • @DashGlitch
      @DashGlitch  4 года назад

      Then help me to understand it mathematically, not sure where the senses come into it - 3 dimensions + 5 senses? LOL :-D

    • @kykep
      @kykep 4 года назад

      No man not at all. You can call dimension whatever you want, which is totally exploited in entertainment ads. Strictly said a "new dimension" is a "dimension" not depending on the current "dimensions". So If I like bang a cowbell on random spots in a track, that alone can be viewed as adding a "new random dimension" or panning left to right would be also "new perceptual dimension". Music producers and especially psy ones seem to be oversensitive to stuff containing "dimension", "level", "warmth", "colors", which are just smart definitions for simple terms by their vendors.
