The choreography is also artistically commendable. With it starting out with just the Argentinian and Nini, but as the song progresses, more men join and take Nini away. Representing how Satine is reluctantly giving her body to her clients. She misses Christian and tries in vain to cope by imagining that she is with Christian. Pining for his nurturing and comfort while she is ravaged by other men. While Christian can only observe helplessly.

I love the vocals and the choreography, Jacek and Ewan sell the pain in their voices so well that they leave you breathless. The duke is downright terrifying and Satine's horror and fear can be practically tasted...but Caroline O’Connor deserves an award for her part. Every time I go through this scene, her little breaths as she is being tugged and pulled by dancers makes me stop breathing and just die.

Moulin rouge is actually based off a french novel “La dame aux camélias”, written by Alexandre Dumas jr. (The bastard son of the guy who wrote The Three Musketeers). The novel itself is based on a true story, on the relationship between Alexandre Dumas jr. and a courtesan named Marie Duplessis, who died at age 23 of a chest disease.
The novel tells the story of Armand Duval, a young man who falls in love with a courtesan, Marguerite. They begin a liaison, with Marguerite being a very famous and sought-after courtesan, and Armand being a young man of modest means. As he can not alone sustain his lover’s lavish expenses, she continues to take clients. It almost drives Armand mad with jealousy, and Marguerite, out of love for him, decides to quit her expensive lifestyle and retire with him to a countryside estate, while he plans to repay her debts with his dead mother’s inheritance. They live peacefully until Armand’s father appears. He writes a letter, asking for Armand to leave Marguerite, but he refuses. Armand’s father then secretly goes to see Marguerite and asks her to leave his son, and explains that if the two of them were to continue their relationship it would ruin Armand, he would be ridiculed and scorned by all, along with their family name and that Armand’s younger sister would never be able to marry the man she loves if her family’s name was tarnished as it would be.
Marguerite then leaves Armand, making him believe she has grown bored and had taken a new lover. Mad with jealousy and devoured by grief, he takes a lover himself as a revenge, behaving coldly and cruelly towards her at every social gatherings where they see each other.
Armand then asks her to come see him, and they end up falling into bed, after Armand mocks, taunts and finally begs her to come back to him, promising he would love and take care of her, no matter what. It’s a very sweet and passionate night. She leaves in the morning, and when he goes to see her in her home, he is informed that she is with one of his clients. In a fit of despairing agony and hate, he sends her some money with a note saying “here is last night’s fee”. After which she leaves for England.
Eventually, he receives a letter from her, where she explains that she has loved him and no other and that she had never betrayed him. It shows her immense devotion and love (one of my favorite lines roughly translated: “Everyday brought a new insult from you, which I received almost as a joy, for it was proof that you loved me still.”) However, the letter also explains that she has an incurable illness, and that she will soon be dead.
Armand rushes back as fast as he can, only to find her already dead, and all of her possession already being auctioned off. He finds letters she wrote him as she was slowly dying, where she shows her love for him, her final days, with bailiffs already emptying her house because of her debts and empty halls as no one would visit a dying courtesan. Her last letters were desperate pleas for him to come see her (“Oh! Come, come, Armand, I’m suffering unbearably, I am going to die, my God.”)
Armand sits through Marguerite’s belongings’ auction where he meets the narrator who bought a book Armand gave to Marguerite, and that Armand would like to buy back. Which results in Armand telling him the whole story.

I could be wrong but I just realized something in my multiple rewatchings of this clip: in the very end when the duke is about to assault Satine, he’s singing Christian’s counter-melody as he undressed her! But he stops at “feelings I can’t fight” instead of finishing the verse. I was shocked when I noticed this but I think it’s an interesting touch to the song because while the Duke is a terrible person, it shows how betrayed he felt and adds an even more sinister note to the overall scene

This film broke all the basic rules of editing, but it worked...that's why it won awards.
The attitude and atmosphere of the tango is complimented by the sharp, snappy cuts on action.
Like when on the dance floor here where they cut several shots of the woman spinning.
It looks almost like she's turning faster than the eye can see.

this scene completely altered my opinion of the movie when i watched moulin rouge for the first time. in the beginning, satine and christian’s relationship is almost comical. it’s all very playful and fun, because that’s all it is: a flirtation. an infatuation. then you see it develop into something stronger, a force of nature that yanks the characters around like a whirlwind against their will (mostly).
    then this scene happens.
everything suddenly starts snowballing. the tangible anxiety of everyone in that room before the song starts is downright suffocating. christian is losing it and he can’t fully put his finger on why because he trusts satine and knows that it’s all an act...but he can’t help it. he knows it’s for his benefit, for EVERYONE’S benefit, but he recognizes that what he and satine has is raw and new and unpredictable but it’s REAL. i get chills when he begins singing softly “his eyes upon your face / his hand upon your hand / his lips caress your skin” and then follows it by belting out in agony, “it’s more than i can stand”. by the end of the song it’s complete and utter chaos. everyone is essentially shouting their lines, competing with one another to be heard but conveying the same emotions, with christian himself continuing to sing even as he leaves the moulin rouge, dejected and frustrated and unable to stay and listen to any more of satine’s and the duke’s meeting. his lines in the song are repetitive but so, so captivating and ewan’s voice sounding almost as if it’s straining to get the words out just add to the whole experience:
“why does my heart cry? / feelings i can’t fight / you’re free to leave me, but just don’t deceive me and please / believe me when i say ‘i love you’“
the tone is suddenly very serious, when the rest of the movie just...isn’t. there were serious parts, of course, but nothing as continuously stressful as this scene. the whole of it carries a sense of knowing dread. it’s so powerful.
and satine softly following christian’s lines with the reprise to “come what may” as he passes below. the choreography and editing of this scene was just fantastic. i liked the movie okay before this scene, i thought it was silly and fun but i wasn’t a huge fan of musicals...but the moment the tango began, the INSTANT their feet slammed onto the stage i was hooked on moulin rouge. i watch it over and over again just so i can see this 5 minute clip completely change the atmosphere of the rest of the movie. it turned it into a masterpiece for me. don’t even get me STARTED on the ice skating routine from the 2018 olympics.

I remember being dragged to the theater to see this movie, having no idea what it was about. I didn't know it was a musical. I didn't want to see a musical. I kind of laughed at the movie at some parts, thought it was far too fast of a narrative at other parts...but this scene changed my perspective on the entire movie, and musicals in general. It probably wouldn't have done that, if I weren't in the theater.
I just remember how loud, intense, and beautiful this song was, and it sucked me into the movie, and musicals, forever. Life-changing song right here.

My mom showed me this movie one day when I was sick. Now, my mom doesn’t have a favorite anything. But when I sat down, she said “I want to show you my favorite movie”. And so, we watched it, and I absolutely fell in love with it, I realized there was an appealing part to just the general atmosphere of it, that linked with something I didn’t even realize about my mom. So now, we’ll burst out randomly into songs from this, and I love how we will watch this together forever and never complain :)

One of the most powerful scenes in this movie. Always makes me cry. This scene is what made me decide that this is my favorite movie ever. I will never forget the first time I watched this when I was 8 years old. I didn't have much of an understanding as to what was going on, but the music left such a great impression on me. Here I am 11 years later, still singing these songs and crying over how beautifully heart breaking this movie is. Moulin Rouge has honestly changed my life, as cheesy as that sounds. Even after watching it at least 100 times, not even kidding, I can't get sick of it.

Morgan Chamberlain Interesting your experience about this film. I don't know if you watched this film in the movie theater. I did and I have to confess, this scene was terrific! An absolute masterpiece!. When I saw this film, I was deeply in love. I remember I really felt the chorus of this scene "His hands on your hands, his eyes on ya face, his lips caress your skin...is more than I can stand. Why does my heart cryes, feelings I can't fight..." these words touched the bottom of my heart, because that girl didn't appreciate my love for her. I almost cry that night with this scene, but currently I can appreciate other things about this scene, for example the sounds of the violin, the original tango which inspired this song, etc. Unfortunately, I couldn't forget this memory.
