This scene is phenomenal, but what impresses me the most is how the music just embodies how jealousy feels. The screeching violins, the passionate tango, Ewan’s enchanting voice singing words of pure heartbreak. It just reeks of jealously and lust. They put this together so spectacularly.
I randomly seen this part of the movie on TV an I had to stop an listen. So I sat down to watch the whole movie an became obsessed from that day forward.
Mine is: ''When love is for the highest bidder, there can be no trust! Without trust, there is no love! Jealousy, yes, jealousy will drive you...MAD!!'' And: ''You made me believe that you love me...''
@maddie709 it's shorthand for boy-p*ssy, so their saying it's got a lot of passion, just in a dirtier way. So sorry if you need eye bleach after this 😅
Just taking a moment to admire Ewan McGregor’s voice and wish he sang more His tone quality is exceptional and honestly kind of indescribable, and the way he hits the “feelings I can’t fight” line produces instant chills Also whoever arranged this piece gets all the gold stars it’s so powerful and heart wrenching
All of your words are very true. Ewan’s voice in general but especially in this scene is phenomenal. So much control and emotion. And this scene is incredible. The singing, the dancing, the acting, the cinematography….it’s all awesome
I personally love this version most, even more than the Broadway, because here Christian is sad hurt, whilst Broadway just makes him angry and unlikable
i honestly love the movie versions of the songs more than the musicals. The music seems more fitting to the time and story to me. Not that I dont enjoy Aaron Tveit XD
Also, while Aaron Tveit has a better voice than Ewan McGregor, his singing doesn't have the brandy-soaked, nicotine-stained character of Jacek Koman. The song just doesn't work as well on stage as it did in the film, and one reason for it is because they turned it into a solo number.
@@TheHermione22 I would have been really nice if the musical could have gotten cleared to use the same songs as the movie. Just cause it would have been interesting to see
I love that The Duke sings at the end because it makes the words have a completely different meaning. When Ewan was singing, the words were conveying a feeling of genuine heartbreak and jealousy. When The Duke sang the words took on a feeing of anger and lust, but still jealousy.
Florencia Martinez It would be great if that were a reprise of another Christian solo. That verse is actually a sample of the tango, “Tanguera” by Mariano Mores. Though it’s an instrumental song, it is quite pretty.
And ofc the sub plot that The tango dancer and Ninnie are also in a relationship, although they're both sex workers. They tell their own tale also. That's why their performance is so real and raw. They're also jealous of one another's business endeavors
The complexity, the passion, the anger, the heartbreak, the yearning, the jealousy, the betrayal, the sadness, the intensity….all of that is in this scene and it’s amazing. This scene left me in tears but also just utter amazement. It was so well acted and sing. And it’s one of the most unique movie scenes I’ve ever seen.
I remember hearing this song as a kid on the soundtrack. I didn’t know exactly what was happening but I could tell from the music that something bad was happening. Then I saw the actual scene when I was a teenager a couple of years ago and I thought “Little me was right. This is a very sad scene.”
Hearing this, I can picture the entire gut wrenching scene… the most intense in the entire movie. The music and singing are both as powerful and impactful as the visual imagery. Can’t watch this scene without being genuinely heartbroken for Satine… doing only what she believes she must, enduring a lifetime of powerlessness and abuse. Christian’s singing and love for her are so beautiful but his jealousy throughout the movie, while understandable, is selfish. Such an epic masterpiece in every way.
This song and scene is an exemplar of what to do with an pre-existing song and completely transform it into a beautiful evocation of the emotions and atmosphere of the particular moment. It’s the benchmark for what all jukebox musicals should aspire to, to make sure the lyrics are telling the story and expressing emotions experienced by the characters but also the musical arrangement itself is heightening them.
This song is so…I have no words. It’s all over the place. The song and the scene are full of all kinds of emotions. Excitement, sadness, pain, passion, love….The acting in this scene is incredible. This is (other than Come What May) my favorite Moulin Rouge song.
This was the last film my fiance and I watched together, six years ago, we rented it. She cheated on me. I return to this whenever I find myself in a black study. It reminds me to keep my head on right because ultimately, it's correct. "Jealousy will drive you mad."
Yeah, but your ex fiance cheated out of greed. Satine was doing her job, which she hated. Her love was always Christian until her dying day. You deserve a Satine.
This song has my heart my soul and everything in between. The way it really makes you feel everything perfectly with the music. Everything, the way christian is jealous because he’s so madly in love but he’s not angry just scared and dancing and the violins, I have no words to describe how amazing this scene was. Moulin rouge is without a doubt on of the most underrated movies ever
The first movie I saw with Ewan McGregor was Moulin rouge and he was captivating. This movie is so powerful and beautiful. It's got such energy. Bravo Baz Luhrmann Phenomenal movie. This whole scene capitulates the whole concept of the movie and it's fantastic.
