- Sinn Féin's Pearse Doherty challenged Leo Varadkar on housing
It comes as new laws linking rent increases to inflation will be in place within a week, according to the Minister for Housing.
Cabinet has approved the new rules which will replace the current annual 4% increase allowed under Rent Pressure Zone (RPZ) legislation.
Moving forward, RPZ increases can be no higher than the general inflation recorded in the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) - which currently stands at just under 2%.
On Newstalk Breakfast this morning, Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien said permitted increases would have been lower in previous years.
“If you look at inflation over the last three years, that averages around 0.73% per annum - so just under one-quarter of 1%,” he said.
“So, instead of a 4% increase that some tenants would have borne because that was the maximum - the maximum over the last three years would have been under 1%.
“Now, currently, inflation is running a bit higher than that but we are still looking at about 1.9%”
Pearse's anger is representative of the average person's anger at not being able to call a house a home!
What a hypocrit Varadkar is. He slates Doherty for going over on time and speaking over the speaker, then does that exact thing himself a minute later.

Leo perhaps fails to realise that the outrage expressed by Doherty is reflective of many people who feel the same way. Hopefully we remember him telling us to "calm down" when next we go to the polls.
The smarmy attitude of varadkar never ceases to amaze me. Makes a big fake dramatic apology about pearse going over time when he does the exact same thing every time he speaks. She even said at the end that there was nothing to apologise about. The man is an obnoxious creep.

The fury and anger is not all pre planned. Anybody that understands body language can tell that Pearse was being genuine. And on behalf of the Irish people that are affected by the housing crisis I would like to thank Pearse for his constant display every Thursday of aggression, nastyness, fury & anger. As an outsider looking in, a Dutch native who has lived and worked in this country for nearly 10 years now.. both sides here are a joke and mostly because they talk but do not _ever_ listen, neither of them.
A massive problem in Ireland is not home ownership, it is rent prices being left to the landlords to set using tricks and nonsense arguments. Currently just because my landlord can rent out two apartments somewhat similar to mine at 300 euro a month more he can just slap the maximum rent increase possible on to my rent regardless of the fact that the value of my apartment has not changed, regardless of backlogs in maintenance, regardless of the fact the other apartments are well overvalued as far as rent goes due to market demands to begin with. _just_ because he _can_ ask and get hundreds of Euros more for a similar apartment he is allowed to increase my rent as soon as he is able to. He can set and manipulate rent prices in order to be able to meet requirements to get the max rent increase from me, and I have no doubt he'll be allowed to make up for the lost rent increase from 2020 to boot. So that will likely mean that my rent from 2022 will be about 30% (yes THIRTY PERCENT) more than when I moved in 7 years ago.
The way varadkar goes on says alot about his demeanor as a person, he is a toerag
