As a disabled person myself I totally understand that a PA is an important relationship, but these people portray wanting a best mate of even a significant other instead of a carer. Asking a PA if they would introduce you to their friends and/or drink with them is unnecessary, & frankly it crosses a line IMO.

I agree. This seems an odd approach to screening people who must be physically strong, smart, and well-trained. We have certificate training programs for " Nurse's Assistants" in the USA, which I think may be a comparable professional. I am shocked at this rather immature and amateur employment process. 😳

I agree - I don't think not providing a more complete description for the position in the advertisement is a great idea either. I
was a support worker for about 20 years, and even though having someone with similar interests, etc is wonderful, the person needs to have some kind of knowledge. It's not a great idea to be seeking someone based on the friendship factor. There needs to be some kind of boundary/ relationship of employer/ employee. I've seen situations in the past where that line blurred, and never ended well.

This doesn't cross a boundary in my opinion, I'm disabled and know my carers friends, family, have been to her sister's wedding, and we will drink together. It's someone you spend a huge amount of time with so theres no reason not to form that bond and become friends too. You might like your carers to be staff, but I think that is the difference between carer and PA. PA also helps with social activities, going to the gym, work, travelling etc.

When I was in the hospital for three months, due to a major stroke that left me paralyzed, one of the daily carers was a young woman around 18 or 19 years old; a nurse trainee. She fed me, dressed me, brushed my teeth, washed my private bits - no complaining, no comments, she was pure gold and we had a laugh :-) My point is, to become a PA to a disabled person, one will need at least basic information concerning the disability the employer has. Nothing should come as a surprise when one seeks employment as a PA.

That can be true, but they're asking people who have no experience with even getting up early, cooking OR cleaning to completely be the hands & feet for individuals who need them to survive. I'm flabbergasted that the PA's are not required to take a course in "how to preform personal care", at the very least.
For a greenhorn this is a terrible shock to the system. No wonder there is such a turnaround. To have some knowledge about medical issues etc. would be tremendously helpful too. In the US this is about a six week course if I remember right.

Scarily even those employed by care agencies are not definitely going to have had training. With one of the care agencies I used for a short time one of them actually admitted to me that at her interview for the care agency she had told them she had no experience, no qualifications & no training & they told her they would provide training, several years later they had provided no training! The care agency I use now thankfully have new carers go out with experienced carers for a couple of weeks to learn what to do & to be introduced to the clients & they frequently do training sessions, new carers are actually not allowed to use hoists for example until they have had the relevant training so until then the new carer would not be sent to someone who needs hoisting

I don't think being a carer is easy for a lot of young people. They don't have the life experience to deal with some of these issues. After you have a child or two, there are bodily functions that you just learn to deal with. Toilet humor be damned, lol! Being a young woman, and having to clear a male contemporaries bowels, can be pretty daunting to say the least. They need more training, not to just be thrown in the deep end, and say 'swim'.

The important thing is for them to be honest & trustworthy. I have had so much stolen from me. Including irreplacable things that were not worth money but were just taken in order to hurt me. I have also been intentionally poisoned. There seriously needs to be a process to eliminate care workers who have Narcisissistic Personality Disorder. There certainly needs to be a register including anyone working in someone elses home, particularly if the person is vulnerable. There are care-workers who have Narcisissistic Personality Disorder, who work mainly with elderly people because they can get away with murder literally. I am disabled, and have used Direct Payments for care. There are some videos on my channel about that experience. These days I just bump along using PIP for my needs, because of being a disabled PARENT the Council just kept assessing my parenting ability and giving me grief, so I came pretty near to having my child removed into care - even though that is why I went to GET THE CARE, so I would be the best parent possible and be able to do that without exhausting myself. So this type of situation is just beyond a dream for me. That said, I employed cleaners for a long time, and they were dreadful. I fired so so many. There were some who assumed I wanted them mainly for friendship and they would talk to me, which was embarrassing because I just wanted them to cleaning the effing house. Others stole from me. Others I caught on CCTV rifling through my paperwork. They made assumptions if they saw me walking (I use a scooter most of the time, but I can walk a bit). They didn't understand autoimmune illness at all. A massive joke really.

You have reminded me of an elderly lady.
She had care workers from Social Services.
We met in the park when we both had dogs and kept in touch.
I used to get so angry.
They listened to our conversations and hardly did a thing.
This lady was almost housebound and one told her to get a dog.
I said how can she take a dog out 3 times a day in all weathers, 365 days a year.
She said it would be company. Idiot!
It was her GP who told me he wasn't happy and was going to complain.
She thought it was me and I never told her that I had met her GP in the street. Maybe I should have but I cut off contact.

It's not the age of the carer that's counts it's how good they are to you and have a sense of humour. Also rule one your personal life is your own. Of course a carer will chat about their family and sometimes a carer will maybe bring the Client on a day out with their family but that is the carer choice and depending who's employing the carer they may need their permission eg NHS

This vas completely TERRIBLE 😢 shocking, unfortunate, unpleasant to watch, asking a PA to do things without proper training.
So inadequate to ask “to be introduced to your friends and drink with them…” or not having gloves to intimate help.. Look like they want “a very close friendship or personal or sexual relationship”. So uncomfortable situations, like, drinking til you can’t walk! 😣

Well urine is sterile so it’s not going to hurt you. It’s just a bit gross but you get used to it, especially if you have children. As a nurses aide I’ve had worse than urine on my hands, I assure you. You just wash your hands really well and move on.

That ad is very misleading, they are not looking for a assistent, they are looking for a carer. A assistent gets you coffee, a carer whipes your but. No wonder this went so poorly if you start out with a lie.

I think she’s just young. Probably too young to be doing that kind of work. After she’s grown and married with a couple of children she won’t even notice a bit of urine on her hands. And besides urine is sterile so it’s not gonna hurt you. Just wash your hands really well and move on. I don’t think it was a good idea to just throw these young people into the deep end and tell them to sink or swim. Some training should be given.
