Two things to advise new drivers in France. Firstly, at the pompe, diesel is usually labelled as 'gazole' and French drivers are commonly driving very close behind you or 'tail gating'as they say in the UK. They also overtake even when someone is driving toward them so be aware of this. Also, a few minor roads have priority over the larger road so pay attention to road markings.

In UK you can get a SANEF tag which operates the Telepéage (orange T) devices at the toll booths. Payment taken following month by Direct Debit in Stg from your UK bank account - saves a lot of time on m'ways (and also works in "Indigo" car parks) and once you have one you would not be without it.

Well that's about it for my French but I do enjoy your lessons. As for driving I completely avoided driving in Paris and enjoyed Uber and le Métro exclusively as well, of course as walking everywhere. I also used Le Batobus for a fun alternative, et les Bateaux Mouches as all tourists do. When arriving in Toulon for a tour through the Cote d'Azur, the rental company EuropCar gave me the biggest van they had, thinking I suppose that Americans like these cars and maybe also thinking Americans are BIG! I could not trade down as they had no others available. Fellow Americans, I strongly advise you to get one of the smaller cars so that you can more easily handle the narrow roads along Le Midi. My most unnerving experience with the big car was in Hyères where I chose what I thought was a lane but was not much made for cars. I was blocked by a bollard which stubbornly refused to lower under any circumstance until I decided to drive up to it almost touching it whereupon it grudgingly lowered itself for me to pass! Have fun no matter the obstacles you may encounter. Bon journée!

I would say be very carefull on french roads. I drove in a lot of states in the EU. I think France is the worst I have seen so far. First day while coming to France we saw a bad accident - a delivery truck on a highway went through the center barrier through the other lane and landed in a ditch witch some other cars. First night, somebody smashed our rear mirror on our car. It was a fairly wide road and I parked very well inside my parking spot. I still can't figure out how that could happen. Since then we saw at least a dozen of smashed rear mirrors on other cars, ripped of front masks on cars, smashed windows and two damaged gas tank lids/doors. All only in one week. And another interesting story happened the same week. We went to catch a tram to go to the city center. No trams that day. Turns out the bus revisor was stabed with a knife into his leg. Public transport drivers went on a strike that day.

    Thanks for your info,
I do have a couple of question regarding 1 priority a droite and some roundabouts in Paris,
1st regarding prioriie a droite, I'm familiar with the signs like the cross on a sign or the orange diamond with a crossout but without these signs how do you know you must give way to the right?
2nd , at least 2 large roundabouts in Paris like the Place de La concorde and the arche de triomphe there isn't any signs or road markings which indicate you are entering a roundabout, so do the parisien drivers just have to learn these are roundabouts and they hope every other driver who isn't from Paris will just follow the drivers who know they are roundabouts?

Be careful : "Diesel" is a car that will run on "Gasoi"l
NEVER put "Essence" in a Diesel car ONLY "Gasoil" otherwise you're going to break the engine

I've driven in Europe many times over the years and never had an "international drivers licence". I've never been stopped by the police and I expect most police can read the simple English on a licence anyway.
A mon avis, ce n'est pas necessaire.

I met a French man and went out to dinner with him. The man ate with his head in the soup bowl slurping the soup really loud and eating with his mouth open. After that it was over for me. I thought that the French had beautiful table manners. This man was from France, near the Mediterranean in an unknown town. Are there French people that are not brought up with table manners?

Not quite sure why you are repeating every french word or phrase. Maybe it's my ocd but that's quite annoying
