- A couple of marine biology students get a very close and personal visit from Oscar, a very curious sea otter in the Moss Landing Harbor, CA. I fell in love.

That's not kayaking with an otter, that's downright getting loved on by one! Amazing! As others have observed, must have spent time with people in a rehab. It's like he sensed she was a gentle soul, and figured, jackpot! Rest my flippers a bit and snag a snuggle before resuming his otter business. Very cool!
Sea otters are the heaviest members of the weasel family. They're also the smallest true marine mammals and the furriest animals. They're pretty unique.
Aren't they awesome? Supposedly very little body fat, which is why they need such dense coats. But yeah, they're clearly not skinny, either! That one had the body habitus of a harbour seal. Amazing they can bulk up that much just on urchins!

DiverKlein They are very cute and seem cuddly but I think I read somewhere or heard on tv that sea otters can be very aggressive so reaching out to pet it could end up biting you. Probably why the woman in the video didn't pet it. lol
DiverKlein I made a point of keeping my hands out of sight because otters (like toddlers) like exploring things by putting them in their mouth and biting them. They can be pretty aggressive, especially with their mates. The females tend to get their faces all scratched up during mating season. As cute as they may be, they can def fuck shit up!

Excellent video! My wife has really gotten me into more wild animals in general, but she especially LOVES sea otters in a very indescribable way. I can tell you love Oscar too. What a sweet sea otter full of love for complete strangers! Thanks for posting what is clearly a special occasion that doesn't come along every day! :)

I thought that was Moss Landing in the background. The Sea Otters near Elkhorn Slough and Monterey for that matter are very curious and pretty friendly. I was born and raised in Monterey CA. I used to run Del Monte Beach all time and newly released otters from the Monterey Aquarium are still friendly to people. I was on the beach with my towel one afternoon and all of a sudden a released female otter came onto shore they are pretty quick out of the water too. Hopped up towards me and yanked my towel she won and took it back out to sea. Nice footage.
If the otter decides...not much you can do. Caution is the word of the day though. If anything unexpected spooks them...and you are nearby...things can go south a lot faster than you might anticipate.
Not about fault or mistakes...they are wild...and something could easily set them off...anything.
I don't know what's more adorable the otter or the woman's response.

Otters are among my favourite animals, and are top of my "I want one as a pet" list. Unfortunately I live in Australia where just about everything cool is illegal.

***** Actually, sea otters are being threatened by killer whales and sharks due to a change in their diet. Orcas are replacing otters with pinnipeds. Of course humans have a big role, but not as much.
***** If you look they are close to a dock, and have a name for this Otter. It's so used to people that it's about domesticated.
wowman Stop spreading lies. Humans may not kill them directly but we are the largest factor in their population decline. Why else would Orca and Sharks hunt a lot smaller prey if we didn't deplete their food source.

This otter is as curious as the raccoons which come to visit my garage.
I'm guessing Oscar was a rehab patient and knew her prior to release. The only time they'll do this is if they are used to being fed by kayakers (DON'T DO THAT!) or they are being chased by a predator.
Nope. I had never seen this otter prior to this encounter. And no food was used to attract him. I can't speak for other people in the harbor, but me and my friend who was with me at this time know better than to feed wild animals.
I'd bring some fish with me for the next visit :)

most otters are curious.they will come close to you.even rub against you.but don't let it fool you.never reach out to pet it.you will notice they let him do his thing,but they never touched him.
Ricovali Otters are definitely not as cute and cuddly as people perceive, they literally rip noses off of females and baby seals while they try to mate. I mean, it's a cool experience to have one come up to you and engage you like that, but I wouldn't stick my hand out either.
Sea Town absolutely!!! People are given the wrong impression on tv and movies that all wildlife is cute and cuddly. When they will rip your face off at any moment. These people are extremely lucky.
Ricovali Same could be said with big dogs, catch it on a bad day and when it Bites, like actually tries, not just a warning bite, you could get hurt. Hell a German Shepard can cause some REAL damage if they felt the need to. All animals are to be respected for their strength.

It's dangerous to treat otters as if they're domesticated. It's like any other wild creature. If they begin getting the idea that humans are friends, it usually dooms them.

They can be extremely aggressive and dangerous. They are wild animals, related to wolverines, badgers, minks and weasels. Their teeth can both crush and tear their prey. It may look cute, but the folks in the kayak were very much at risk of serious injury.
I don't get why people think animals exist to kill/hurt people. It was just a curious otter. And judging by it being named, i am pretty sure it's adopted
+Ken Peterson didn't look like he was in attack mode. more like curiosity mode or love and sugar mode. I think they would be more likely to attack real prey, fish, certainly not the person in the kayak.
