I'm a Strat guy, I got a nice Nash Tele a while ago. Here's what I like about it: its rock solid, notes always sing clear, its a very easy guitar to keep in tune and well set up, which consequently makes it easier to play across the neck. The bridge pickup is more rocky and useable than a Strat bridge. I play it most often, actually. But, when I pick up my Strat, its like putting on an old pair of slippers. Its so comfortable. The strings are a bit slinkier. The neck pickup does the blues thing so nice. Both guitars have their strengths.
So true! When I had the Tele, BOOM! Hey, it's the Strat but you've got that Tele! Put the pickup two tones off back on the bridge, knuckle down and you're home. A little extra slinky, good hip on the intonation and it's square one. No ham and egg'ers but if you need to you can shave that edge real close, feel around till you find what you need. It works both ways with each pickup, especially if you're playing through an old rock steady. Great guitars! 👌💯
It the best choice as your go-to “desert island” guitar.....doubles a hammer, paddle, shelter, as well as a fine instrument (that stays in tune).

I'm 60 and true love hit me in Navada Music Shop in Portsmouth England 30 years ago. I went in looking for a strat and came out with a buttersctoch reissue Telecaster.....it was love at first sight......I play it every day !! (not on the same planet as you Josh ...but I try !!!) There are Tele's and then there are TELE's. Bill is also a friend, we've jammed together back in the day in SJ and various "tone hunt" get togethers. I've played a bunch of different Tele variations he's done as I'm sure you also have. As great as all his guitars are, he has some special affinity for Tele's. He knows just where in a hunk of wood the body lives. He built an RF tribute for another friend which was the most alive guitar I've ever played.
BTW, it's a good thing RUclips has a slow down feature. There are so many concepts to pick up from what for you is just noodling but add the right spice to what the rest of us play. I've been going though your guitar collection vid picking out things. Now I'm going to have to add this to the list.
I'm a strictly strat guy playing the Chicago Circuit for years. Its an amazing discovery to know the versatility of the telecaster. In certain situations the Strat can sound thin. (Especially when you need to sound jazzy). Now i bring a Strat and a Tele to every gig i play and im in tone heaven. Thanks Mr. Fender
Everyone has their own opinions, but man you can make ANY guitar sound amazing. Me personally I’m a Strat guy till I die, but I love Teles as well and Humbuckers. But for me a Start neck position you can’t beat in my opinion.

Regardless of the Tele being a magical guitar, the only takeaway I get from your videos is that if you can play the guitar, you don't need any gear, any special equipment, expensive guitars or effect pedals. It's all in the hands and the ears. All of it. But this is a lesson we desperately need to learn these days.
My first guitar was a tele and I just ordered a tele build kit from warmoth, i'm excited to have one again!

I always thought of Telecasters as cowboy geetars, so I stayed well away from them. Sometime around 2003, I walked into a shop here in Tokyo and there was a dirt cheap Fender Japan Tele in 3TS hanging on the wall. Something about its looks spoke to me and I asked to play it. Seventeen years later, it's my Number 1. It's gotten '64 Pure Vintage pickups, CTS pots and is just magic into a hard-working Marshall. It's resonant and wonderfully loud acoustically ... and it never fails to bring a smile to my face. Neck and middle positions are to DIE for ...
What kind of music do you play?

I couldn't agree more. Before the apocalypse, I found myself playing in about 10 different bands. I would take a tele to every one of those gigs. Reggae, Soul, Blues, Rock, Jazz or whatever it was, the tele was the best option.
I also like how little there is to go wrong on one. If you've got a floating trem on a strat and snap a string mid song, you're knackered. On a tele, you can keep playing and be in tune. A tele can take more abuse than any other guitar and still do its job well!
Funny thing is I discovered F. Tele a few months ago. Earlier I played Music Man, Ibanez, Strat, LesPaul, PRS CE24 and Tele just blown me away with its tone, versatility and very efficient simplicity. I was afraid of giving it a chance but I don't regret I did. I totally agree with you man.
Hail to the tele. I'm old and have been fortunate to own many guitars, vintage and new. Most have come and gone but I still have an all black AVRI '52 tele that I bought new in 2004. I haven't changed a thing about it. It's my go to guitar and play it much more often than my LP and strat.
I've been playing for 30 years and always wanted a strat, never even thought of a tele, ended up playing Gibson style guitars for 20 years, then I got a strat, couldn't get comfortable with it at all, I got a cheap tele about 5 years ago, did some work on setting it up and new electronics, it's now the first guitar I go for every time, it just feels right, stays in tune and plays everything.
I totally agree, it’s the most raw and honest guitar there is. I bought an anniversary Broadcaster because your playing has been really inspiring for me the last few months.
Tele and 335 are imho the most honest guitars.

Sold my ‘66 Tele a long time ago. Built a couple of Tele Deluxe style guitars along the way...been missing the simple, straight up basic Tele.
Can’t afford to even buy the Squire Classic Vibe right now. I have a nice Strat style guitar, one of my Tele Deluxe builds with P90’s, and SG Junior, so I’m a blessed guy.
I will likely have one again. Hopefully sooner, than later?

This holds soo true for me. I was a strat player through and through until I played the right tele; didn't even have to plug her in.
But to be completely honest, you could say that about any type of guitar.. The ones that aren't your favorite styles or what not.. You just haven't played the right one.
Its crazy within the first few notes you can tell how special an instrument it is.
I started playing Guitar in 1983. My first really good electric Guitar was a 1985 Japanese Telecaster Custom in Sunburst with a double bound Body. I still have it, but it's played by my Son now 90% of the time. I own two pre CBS Strats that I prefer. And I can't live without a Tremolo. Almost every Note I play gets a dip or a yank...😆
My Broadcaster has been my main axe for the last 5 years and I’ve been a Strat guy for 45 years.
Josh that's some superb playing on your part and music to my ears.

I bought a Tele from Reverend 3 years ago because of you. Haven’t touched my Strat as much since.
Another fine vid. I had played many years before I got my first Tele, before I held a Tele at all. When I felt that neck and then heard the bridge pup my eyes popped! Still have that Tele but now I play a Mark Jenny Tele still with a Fender bridge pup but a Gibson minibucker in the neck.

Then a buddy who worked at Hollywood Vintage needed cash and sold me a ‘69 that was owned by a famous player and spent some time screwed to a wall at a hard rock and it’s perfect. My #1 ever since
I built an MJT tele with a super fat vita he v shaped neck from warmoth with Monty guitars DP-51 pick ups in it. Thing is a dream. Accompanied with my fender hotrod deluxe I can literally play anything on that bad boy.

No guitar do the job as a Tele do.
It pretty recently I put one in my arsenal!
My main giutar has been a 55 strat 56 strat and a 59 strat whit Rosewood neck and a 63 strat.
I got hold of a 62 tele sonic blue whit poor neck on so I'm got a Esquire 50s neck made to me. I love the thick fat D profile and as I'm use 0.12-0.58 whit thin neck that give me cramp. But heck im love my Tele and its because of Josh and few more im today own one and it's part of my gear. I even consider bring in a Adler body Tele because it has a bit more snapp then my old heavy Ash body.

My first Tele wasn't even really a Tele, it was an early Schecter PT model in 1980. Unbelievable guitar. That's where I fell in love with the body shape and its feel. I then got a 'Fender 52 reissue and liked it, but I let it go for some reason. I didn't bond with that When I got my '62 reissue with the rosewood neck and double binding, everything just clicked. Swapped out those particular pickups because I wanted something closer to a 50's Tele sound, and I got it. Once that was in place, it's always been the guitar I always go to first. And I love the 7.25" radius too!

All I have ever played right up til last year has been my Telecasters...I added a Strat but my go to us always my Telecaster. I love the sound and the ground you can cover is vast!

I agree. I got my first Fender Tele this year. Got a Les Paul and a Strat, and by far; the Tele is my favorite. I actually plan on my next purchase being another Tele style guitar, perhaps a different guitar maker
I absolutely agree! If I had to limit myself to one guitar, it would be the Tele. I made the most miles on the Tele and it always works in every situation.
I played a custom shop nocaster and it was the finest guitar I’ve ever had in my hands. I like pointy guitars, but the nocaster felt outrageously good. Something special about it.
My favourite tele style guitar is from the Godin. I’m playing Passion Custom Classic. Amazing quality and sound! Thank you for the video and music.

I am a newbie to Guitar but have been playing Tenor Sax for 40 years. I bought a Gibson LP and then happened to pick up a MIM Tele. Holy cow...It's like dating two really hot chicks but one likes to stay out late. Love this Tele.

I had a 52 reissue tele, it had the dark bassy sound in the neck position that I liked, especially if you were to play "Bring it on home" from the mighty Zeppelin or something similar.
I agree with Josh, if you can only take one guitar, the tele hands down is the most versatile election guitar.
I bought one on ebay for $137. Made by 'Tradition' guitars. Maple neck that's really comfy in my hands. It has paid for itself a hundred times over I guess. Has the urethane finish-perfect for withstanding the horrible climate here on the Texas gulf coast.
Dude, tele are most unique, and it will be almost impossible to find one that sound just as good that one, great vlog...
You do sound better on your “Strat “. You say that because you don’t use the whammy like it should be used. Like Landau for ex. Or your friend from last interview. Then you would really give the Strat a fair shake. But you are Josh Smith man. Of course you like the Tele more. And we like you!

Absolutely agree, I'm a lifelong Strat player but I'm really enjoying my Tele these days. We owe Leo and co. an immense debt of gratitude for these wonderful creations!
I think my favorite versions of other guitars are the ones that remind me of Tele’s
I remember the first Tele that I fancied for a while and got in 1997 - I was beyond excited. Then when I started regularly playing it only to realize how much I hated everything about it - the anemic neck pickup, the horrendous vintage bridge, and the fat bat-sized neck to name a few. Fast-forward to today, the T is my #1 - I can't live without one! All the negatives are the ultimate positives for me, ha ha!

Love me a tele. No doubt the most versatile guitar - and I would argue the best. But question - has anyone used a real tele for pure metal shredding. Not that I want to do so - just an academic interest.

Not sure if you consider this shredding, but check out Jim Root of Slipknot and John 5. My son is into this style and I've seen a few players in this genra using teles. So yeah, there are at least a few and this might be a place to start.

I used to think they were the most boring guitar with a bland sound. Put them off for 20 years. Then someone put one in my hands. It was an squier affinity. I've been in love ever since. I have so many I've lost count, lol. They have classic style and tone for days.
Telly is more versatile than strat IMHO cause has got just 3 positions BUT all usable (harder to find a strat that blew your mind on all 5 pos) . On other hand, it's true Strat has got more positions, more confort and iconic Neck pickups sound, ok, but IMHO the 3 positions of the telly are telling "what you are" and force you to develop your expression, while stratocaster leads more to "defined licks" and "defined expression". Then, there are "modern" contoured teles, top loaded bridges, p90 teles... So in the telecaster shape we actually have more options than in the 50's! And... Last but not least, two of greatest actual guitarist (Josh Smith &... Julián Lage) are playing telecaster I two very different "genres", so as he said: try it!

Love my Tele, but after getting my 64 Strat which has an amazing sounding bridge pickup, that will always be number one, they are so close though. I'd say more Teles sound better than most Strats, but those very few very best Strats out there are still the king of the hill.
I played Strats for 40 years-still do-but since I never use the trem and only play in three positions, I decided I might as well play a Tele. I’m never putting mine down again.
If I close my eyes I ear an excellent archtop guitar....how is that possible???

Well, I wish I could play like that on my telecaster style too lol. Ted Greene, Ed Bickert, Tim Lerch and you sir are my main influences for Tele style guitars. How close would you say the pickup height should be? I have Lollars on my Tele style Godin. Lollar CC on the Neck and Lollar Special T in the Bridge. Thank you very much!!
So I found my tele for me. It's amazing. It's not a fender. It's a one of one warrior guitar. It is by far the best guitar I have ever played. Played plenty. Don't like fender custom shops. They are good but not at worth the price. This one is 5400 and literally wipes the floor with the custom shops and masterbuilds I've played. Coming from a strict strat player point of view this t style is unreal
Right on Josh yeah I have a couple of Telly's and I want to get more into playing them and you can definitely send out some serious riffing on that telly and combining the pickup combinations which are have been what sets that guitar apart and it's like you said a all around and great and has all the sounds you really need to cover a lot of different venues of music of course you have your own definite style witch you have worked out of that great guitar and your Technique is fantastic of course like yourself I am hung up on my 7 string Ibanez and Lovin Every nuance I can Propel out of that guitar and I bought it for 250 bucks off Craigslist made in Indonesia with emgs real ones and a tremolo and it's just Brown mahogany I think and it didn't play ding dong when I got it and I brought it to my guitar tech and he brought it back to some life and I played it and thought wow this thing sucks and it's out there for 6 7 8 months and I plugged it in just to see if I was going to tried to sell it or junk it or whatever and I did a little fine-tuning on it and all the sudden I was just totally amazed and I thought I was just hallucinating but it really sounded great I think I had a cheap battery or something in it and I put a high-end battery and those emgs came alive and the things stays in tune perfectly in the intonation which I'm very strict about and I've been praying it ever since every night for the last eight months I can't put it down it just sounds ridiculously fantastic and I have my custom shop straps high end Ibanez shredders my custom-made guitars etc etc but that thing is the bomb so my to Telly's which are sitting right next to it kind of the same scenario how I got those one I thought I was going to junk and it's sat there for 8 months a year because I thought I put this together getting different parts and The neck The Relic body with pickups out of Florida 4 like 50 bucks The Necklace about a hundred and seventy-five and I got it back from my guitar tech and I thought this thing sucks again it's out there for months and months and when time I tried to turn it after it sat for a couple of months and I couldn't get that thing to tune up worth a ding dong so it's at for another 6 months and then I pulled it out again and in a few minutes I had it tuned up and it's playing perfect just like my Ibanez and I'm going what is going on this is unbelievable and this tele is playing like it's nobody's business it's like a relic surf green with some oil caps and I got it from a guy out of Florida and anyway the thing is just playing amazing go figure right the two guitars that I thought I was just going to junk end up being some fantastic playing and sounding guitars anyway did your playing your sound and you're different effects you added to it the slapback the fuzz was cool too and you make those big string sound like playing with ease I know I like to dig in to my strings also but with different guitars probably do both light Touch and digging in also to get the different variances of tone and sounds anyway play on Josh sounding great take care

Hey Josh! One thing your guitars have (this one as well as the new Ibanez signature, so it can be a coincidence!), that the classic Tele didn't have, is the roasted neck. What do you feel it adds to the guitar? thanks!!
My Chapin isn't roasted but the Ibanez is. I like the stability that it adds. Roasted necks stay straight as an arrow.
