Tell you one of the biggest expenses on top of everything in this video, is a computer system. You can't develop your digital images without some sort of computer can you! And I tell you what, if you want to take advantage of some of the latest features in image development applications, you do need quite a pokey machine. Lots of people do mobile editing, uploading to cloud and downloading for development on tablets and phones (Lightroom mobile for example) but you want all the cool features and more pro level catalogue management, and performance to suit, you do have to spend a bit of money on a computer system, hard drives, back up methods etc etc. And they're not cheap either, considering demand has hit the roof for electronic devices.

Very good topic Jimmy. I too also go places where nobody has been. Since I got "back"into photography 10 or 15 years ago, I kept a spreadsheet of all I bought for my "hobby". Including printers, paper, ink, cameras, lenses, batteries etc etc etc. All in all about 45k so far, that includes the new hobby of youtube videos and all the stuff included in that. And there is all the genres that I experiment with, macro, astro, wildlife, landscape. And lets not leave out all my film cams, film, and processing! This doesn't include the gas for travel, attraction tickets, food etc. Then there is the time involved to "get there". And how many miles have I put on my car to get to the places I need to be at, which by the way required new more off roady tires for my lil SUV, and the upkeep of the vehicle... Then there is the computer equipment to process all this stuff, hard drive storage, off line storage ad infinitum. I rekon you could say my lil apartment is my "office" which holds all this stuff and where I do my work. But you know what, I am retired and this "hobby" keeps me fit as I need to hike to places, I walk a lot, am in the outdoors a LOT. The health benefits of what I do far outweigh the cost. Keeps my mind busy. I mean ALL my time is planning, going, shooting the "next place" And by the way, no more buying!!! I'm learning with what I have! Cheers!

Time is the ultimate cost of photography.

That was sure on point for my start in photography. My first camera was what I could afford and it wasn't much. A little pocket camera that held 110 film. The film wasn't too expensive. Developing was the killer in the hobby for me. When I realized I needed something different was on a vacation in 1977. We were in Yellowstone Park and I saw a guy set up a tripod where he could catch the sunset just to the side of Old Faithful erupting. He let me look through the viewfinder and that hooked me. I tried taking the same photo with my little camera and, of course, it was a waste of money. It was a little later when I purchased my first "real" camera. An Olympus OM-1. Couldn't afford it but I had a credit card and I had fun. I took lots of photos (maybe too many since it was film) at all kinds of events. Lots of people who were at the center of these events would see my photos and ask to buy some. It never crossed my mind that I could develop my hobby into something more, maybe because I had no money to pursue it. I sometimes wonder what could have been. Now I have an OM-D EM-1 MkII and some lenses but I will be upgrading soon to the new OM-1. That's kind of a neat idea for me. It takes me full circle to the same camera model I started with. I'm retiring soon and now I can play with my hobby more than ever.

After travel and personal time, the most expensive part is making and presenting high quality prints. Without presentation, your images are photographic embryos destined to stay on a hard drive until the technology dies or becomes inaccessible.

Hi Jimmy Yes true comments. My cameras and countless accessories have cost me a fortune. However, once bought the cost is finished other than upgrading, repair or replacement. But travel particularly overseas to shoot mainly wildlife and nature is my highest expense. Four, 1 week trips in a year to just Europe cost me around £8000 !! And then with wildlife I may not even see let alone obtain a good photo of the bird, animal, plant or reptile I would have liked to shoot. Half the fun is just going. Still waiting for my pre ordered OM-1 camera and the problem with my 150-400mm lens to be sorted out by OM Systems. Peace 😊

This is were the rubber hits the road. There’s so many good photographers, but very few people that have the skills to run a good business. Spending money on gear is easy, making your money back is the hard part!

Photography is quite expensive, camera, lenses, memory, batteries, bags, lights, tripod a computer powerfull enough to handle editing and storage. This doesn't include printing your selected photos its not unreasonable to spend north of $15k. I am not a Profesional I shoot a nikon D850 Photography is my therapy. I wouldn't have it any other way.
