@@BarryKenny I like SUPing in low tide coz I get to go away from people basking in the sun on the shore. I prefer no audience coz I’m still practicing my balancing, and I like dipping in the ocean before I go home, the water 🌊 is warm, so away from audience the better. Being on the board I can spot a good area for dipping (no sea grass and weeds, just sand).
I been seeing People do this at my favorite outside swimming spot for 2 years now so I bought A cheap set wanted to try out today but weather turned so gonna try out tomorrow
I was just doing an annual check in with ya, Barry! How's the SUP'ing been going for ya? Do you have any follow ups? You should be King of the Sea by now :) I'm thoroughly enjoying my past year with mine, although I do wish there were a few more folks on the water out my way (Balbriggan - Still waiting on that DART ya promised me (For 2018) on George Hook's Radio show on Newstalk back in 2011 I think it was - Haha!) Anyway, thanks once again for being the encouragement for me to get into SUP - I love it!
Going great David! I think I’ve started about four follow-up videos by now, so I MUST finally get it done! A few travel clips have got in the way also. The money ran out for the DART back then, but we’re back in the planning for it now! Delighted you’re enjoying SUP too, hopefully July and August will bring the weather needed.
Great video . Just got my husband a paddle board for his birthday which we are taking to the Dordogne area on Saturday. He’s only tried it once before on a sailing holiday where we hired a board with the yacht but it would not inflate properly- it was like a banana - being a trier he kept trying to inflate it more but it didn’t work but he kept trying to paddle much to my and the people on the shore of the wee coves we were moored in viewing pleasure - it was so bloody funny. Hopefully with his own board and calm waters he can stand for more than 20 seconds 😂
Good stuff Barry. Obviously years of dodging awkward questions has given you a great sense of balance😄 It's not easy, I tried it off Clifden last year and found it difficult and I used to white water paddle.
I got intrigued by it - last May and just after the Covid restrictions were partially lifted. Since then over this year I have had three more go's at it. And on my last attempt I stood up on the board for 4 seconds. I am hoping to do better than that - on the 15th August. And if it means getting wet. By design or accident. I will do so.
@@BarryKenny It is. And although I am hiring at the moment. A 10.8 foot board or a 12 foot one is adequate. And good enough for me to do so! I do have a battle plan to do so. Assuming that the problem with the water quality improves by the 15th of this month at Clevedon Marine lake in North Somerset. There's a intention to do so by the 12th so my battle plan for that, remains in effect. For one hour and to learn how to get back onto the board after coming off. I've done a lot of research on this. You were using the paddle backwards. It is a very common error 😏 The blade slopes and people assume you want the slope to face backwards to 'scoop more water' but you want it so that when your paddle blade has been drawn past your body (top of the shaft now sloping forward) the blade is now vertical. To put it another way, with the paddle shaft vertical, the blade should slope towards the front.

Morning, just started paddle boarding myself.. unfortunately on my first attempt I fell in about 7 times when trying to stand up. But great fun regardless. What thickness is your wetsuit from Decathlon? Thanks
Ive been very cautious, I reckon I need to let myself fall a few times!! It’s 4/3mm thickness - given the goal is to stay out of the water, it’s certainly plenty temperature wise even in winter. Great job! I know your video is 2yrs old but still, you give me encouragement! Greetings from Miami Florida USA 🇺🇸! I hope you are still paddle boarding in 2023! A kiss for puss 🐈
Excellent video and very informative. I know Bull Island but did not recognize the the exact spot where you started and ended your journey, could you let me know where this is located? Also is there any concern about getting stuck in the mud flats around the Wooden Bridge?
Thanks Tom. I started and ended from behind the Sea Scouts building, just on your left after you cross onto the island and pass the small few houses. google maps Dropped pin goo.gl/maps/1dFzgCTuWUHnnRND8 I keep a close eye on tide times so as to avoid getting stuck! The great thing about Bull island as an area for using the board is that we do get some very calm days (albeit there were a lot more of them last summer!)
Hi Barry, I bought my first SUP board last week and was thinking of taking it on a maiden voyage at Bull Island. Your video has been really helpful. I was wondering where to start off from but the Sea Scout area it is. I was also wondering if you avoided the beach area due to the kite surfers?
Enjoy your new board Tom! Certainly as a beginner, the sea scout area is a good choice as the water is calmer, and there’s no audience! But there’s lots of choices including the slip opposite yacht club, the one a little up from Bay, the swimming shelters on the Bull Wall, and the beach itself. The kite surfers didn’t come into my mind to be honest, I just think the wind will always be a bit stronger and the sea less calm out on the beach.
Great video and amazing to see you standing up straight out of the box. Just bought my first sup but on its first inflation it’s got a leaky valve so it’s going back. Just hope I get my refund quick so I can get another ordered and delivered in time for my trip to the highlands month 👍
The oar is facing the wrong direction:) Good sense of humor. By investing a bit more you could get a decent pump. Carbon oar makes a difference. Keep going;)
Hi Rei, still using it and using it year-round (when the weather is right). I’ve loads of clips recorded for a one year on video, one of these days I’ll get around to editing it!!
you said using one for the first time, then 2 months later! So after pumping it up, you didn't attempt to stand up and use it for 2 months, and then got up the first time when you did?
Hi Michael, I got it just after Christmas so not unusual for Irish weather not to cooperate over a few weekends. And yes, I was surprised too how I took to it - I assumed it would be the clown show that my surfing efforts had been, but the one lesson I took from other YT videos was “stand either side of the handle”. The boards are sturdy, and it was very calm. Full disclosure, I had stood on a board on holidays about 5 years earlier, without instruction, and with fairly regular falls! And also had a “beginners” informal session a few months earlier, that was worth doing just to see if it was worth buying (again, quite a few falls). But that was my first use of that board, and assuredly as a novice!
Hey! Thanks for the video. The board seems nice. Never heard of Orca Boards before. What's the build quality and what's your weight? Looking to buy one, still deciding on the brand and specs :) Thanks!
Thanks Alex! I was like you, doing all the research before deciding. It is 10ft 4 long, 32inch wide, 6 inch thick. I’m 184lbs currently! And I think you can see how solid it is for my weight. It’s a great package, and they are excellent to deal with, so I’d certainly recommend.
@@BarryKenny Do you deflate the SUP when you’re not using the board? Pumping itself is a workout. Too much energy is spent in pumping instead of spending it paddle boarding.
This board is absolutely identical to my GOSEASUP board, down to every detail so I’m convinced they are mass produced china items being branded as different brands. That said they are really good, rock solid and high quality for the price.
I have just bought an inflatable paddle board, which I have tried out twice so far, with great success. The only problem, is carrying the board to the launch site (the North Sea) Although the board isn’t particularly heavy, it is a bit awkward to carry. I’ve been looking online for carrying straps and there are a few, ranging in price from less than a tenner, to some much more expensive... they seems too good to be true. Have you used straps to carry your SUP .. if so, which one did you buy ?
Hi Brian, I had the same problem. On a busy day, there’s too much traffic to drive to where I launch, so I wanted a good strap. Unfortunately the experience has not been good - mine cost about €20 or so, and it barely fits the board, and is still fairly awkward to carry the board. Probably a bit better than carrying without the strap, but it did make me wonder whether it was worth the bother. Sorry I can’t be of more help, but if you do find one that’s good, let me know!
Thank you for the video, very helpful. I just bought a board online and looking forward to trying it out. Did you end up buying an electric air pump? Just curious.
Great video, loving our SUP time, we’ve all pumped the board up and then deflated it instantly, so glad it did it too. Have you bought a compressor yet?

Thanks so much, hope you enjoy your session on Sunday, I’m sure you’ll be great!
Thank you for this video. Just about to have my first lesson so this was really useful. 😊
Thanks, great to hear it - hope the lesson goes well for you, and that you enjoy it!
Great video.
What camera are you using on tbe board? I love how it moves around .
Keep it up
Thanks Christopher. The camera is an Insta360 OneX, so it’s recording 360 degrees all the time, and you can edit the footage afterwards to show the view that you want. They’ve released the One X2 since I bought mine, which is better again.
Great job! I know your video is 2yrs old but still, you give me encouragement! Greetings from Miami Florida USA 🇺🇸! I hope you are still paddle boarding in 2023! A kiss for puss 🐈
Thank you for your lovely comment! Yes, still paddle boarding, though I think it would be nicer in Miami!! Puss says hi too!
Great video makes me want to buy a board now 👍
Thanks Stephen, Christmas is coming, treat yourself to a board!
Apart from using the paddle the wrong way around, I thought you did a great job.
Yes, well I did say I was a beginner…🙈 Glad you liked the video!
Excellent video and very informative. I know Bull Island but did not recognize the the exact spot where you started and ended your journey, could you let me know where this is located? Also is there any concern about getting stuck in the mud flats around the Wooden Bridge?
Thanks Tom. I started and ended from behind the Sea Scouts building, just on your left after you cross onto the island and pass the small few houses. google maps Dropped pin

I keep a close eye on tide times so as to avoid getting stuck!
I had my first time days ago and I felt just like how you felt in the intro of this video
It gets easier, I promise!!
Good man BK!
Good job!! :)
Great video and amazing to see you standing up straight out of the box. Just bought my first sup but on its first inflation it’s got a leaky valve so it’s going back. Just hope I get my refund quick so I can get another ordered and delivered in time for my trip to the highlands month 👍
Fingers crossed, can only imagine how spectacular that will be!
Sometimes you just need to tighten the valve with the tool in the orange tube. Some boards come needing to be tightened a little.
The oar is facing the wrong direction:) Good sense of humor. By investing a bit more you could get a decent pump. Carbon oar makes a difference. Keep going;)
Barry, I'd love to know how you and the SUP are getting along better than a year later. Are you still using it?
Hi Rei, still using it and using it year-round (when the weather is right). I’ve loads of clips recorded for a one year on video, one of these days I’ll get around to editing it!!
Do you think paddle board actually more stable than cheap inflatable kayak
I genuinely don’t know, I find it easier though!
you said using one for the first time, then 2 months later!
Looking to buy one, still deciding on the brand and specs :)
Thanks!
@@BarryKenny thanks!
@@BarryKenny Do you deflate the SUP when you’re not using the board? Pumping itself is a workout. Too much energy is spent in pumping instead of spending it paddle boarding.
I generally don’t, but I have an electric pump now so I save my energy! 🙂
This board is absolutely identical to my GOSEASUP board, down to every detail so I’m convinced they are mass produced china items being branded as different brands. That said they are really good, rock solid and high quality for the price.
Thank you so much
I have just bought an inflatable paddle board, which I have tried out twice so far, with great success.
The only problem, is carrying the board to the launch site (the North Sea)
Although the board isn’t particularly heavy, it is a bit awkward to carry.
Thanks Nana. Yes I did, I bought this one and it’s brilliant! outdoormaster.com/products/20psi-high-pressure-sup-air-pump-the-shark
Great video, loving our SUP time, we’ve all pumped the board up and then deflated it instantly, so glad it did it too. Have you bought a compressor yet?
Thanks Phil! I got the electric pump, so I’m saving the energy for the paddling these days!!
Damn maybe I need a different board. Fell off mine straight away
At least the weather is good for falling in! 😆
Pour une première fois, c'est très bien 👍
Merci bien Rudy!
Great video Barry! Though not sure I'm up to SUP.
I just need a waterproof drone controller, because Mrs K isn’t keen on learning...!
La pala se utiliza al revés??
¡Sí, sí, ahora lo sé! 🫣

Can I ask the width & length of your board?
Hi Serge, it’s 10 ft 4 long, and 32 inches wide. (3 metres 15 long and 81cm wide).
@@BarryKenny Thanks! I'm a beginner like you and I was going to get a 30" wide iSUP, but you've convinced me 32" is better.
Clontarf?
Yes indeed
Certainly isn't how my first attempt went, on a lake with a little breeze.
Very wobbly 🤷♂️
I’m lucky in that where I paddle is reasonably calm. Also, the board makes a huge difference - I’ve hired boards abroad and can barely stand!
Lol using the paddle as a shovel, turn it around
Yes thanks, as many others have pointed out, generally more politely 😉
Amazon has a electronic pump
I got the Outdoormaster Shark pump since, it’s a game changer!
You are holding the paddle backwards
Yep! A recurring theme in the comments!! 🤭
Very good but you must learn how you can hold the padle!!!!
😆 yes, I’ve fixed that!!
@@BarryKenny go on ......!!!
Nice video, just one thing and you are probably aware now. Your
paddle is the wrong way round 😊
Heart attack when you let the air out, thx

Using paddle wrong way!
@@serenity8145 yes, I’ve been told that a few times… well, I was a beginner! 😆
I hope Orca didn't sponsor. I'd be devastated if you advertised my product by not being able to pump it up.
Haha, no they didn’t - to be fair, pumping is simple, it was the pump operator that was the problem!! A great board, still going strong.
By now I hope you know you were holding the paddle in the wrong direction...
I do indeed, a recurring theme in the comments! 🙈
Now you've done an unboxing vid I presume that next will be pretending to be an evangelical Christian reacting to the Dead Kennedy's? 🤔
As consistent as any of the other videos I suppose!
Loved it, thanks for sharing your experience. As others have said it's a nice video and helps make that first trip out seem very approachable. Looks like a great location and I know what you mean about bike pumps 😃
They’re the worst, just illogical!! 🤣 Thanks a mill, glad you enjoyed the video.
