  • Our Grade 4/5 class recently spent an incredible three days at the YMCA’s Camp Thunderbird in Sooke, BC. During this time they were able to challenge themselves in various ways, not the least of which was being away from home for an extended period. For many students, this was the first time being away from their parents and sleeping in another bed, mainly due to the challenges of Covid over the past two years. They were able to face their worries head-on and persevered for our two-night stay.
Before the camp began we had written down our “Roses” (things we were looking forward to) and “Thorns” (things we were worried about). Afterward, we were able to reflect on our experiences and reviewed the statements we made before camp. The students realized that most of their worries and anxieties about certain elements were unfounded and not a reason for concern. It was a good learning experience to explore how our mind often takes over, when in reality we have the skills and abilities to successfully face challenges.
