This is one of the greatest intro's of all time. Not just for anime but television in general. It sets up a perfect atmosphere, disturbing and mysterious which fights the show nicely. If Monster's pacing had been better (really drags sometimes) and some filler and characters cut out then without hesitation call it the best show of all time. The realism of the setting, the simple but interesting plot and the incredible themes (i.e who is the real monster?) make this anime a classic. Please note this is a personal opinion!
the theme is perfect for johan. the choir represents his outside appearance of beauty and perfection that holds over and the subtle interference with it that eludes to him, and only when he appears to the viewer does the facade fully disappear.
I do agree that the show does get draggy at times but i would argue that sometimes the filler was super important. The side characters and tenma's interactions with them really help in both exploring tenma's character and also in furthering his character arc. Making his development solely dependent on his interactions with Johan would both remove the enigma and mystery from johan's character while also wouldnt have given tenma the room for growth required for his character arc

after 5 years of watching anime, i still think johan is the best villain (runner-up makishima shougo).... he never had any good intentions from the start (unlike Light and Lelouch) he was practically BORN evil. And his character is so realistic and so unique that its scary. not only that but his goals and methods are also very believable... i always get this feeling that such a person in world might actually exist... o_o
Very similar to Kirei Kotomine; however, Kirei tries to figure out what's 'wrong' with him per say. Johan has no doubt in his mind who he is (a monster with no name) and what he wants to do.
To all of you saying this opening sends shivers down your spine because you watched the anime, let me tell you something... I've never watched this anime and it's sending shivers down my spine, I don't think knowing the anime is required for that eerie effect.
johan may be the monster but he's beautiful at the same time it actually is unearthly and frightening it gives you a sense of how dark and deep human nature spirals
i had watched this series once and it left an impression on me that still makes my body shiver, i just saw the opening and sure as hell i got that shivering in my body back.
I saw this anime when I was 13 and I remember that I was captivated and frightened by it. Nowadays, I don't really remember the story but It seems that I always have shivers when I think at Monster... Brrr....

Johan is hands-down, beyond every anime and manga antagonist. He would manipulate Light to commit suicide and Light could never find out his real name because even Johan doesn't know it, lol. Don't know for Lelouch, but if he is similar to Light as they say he is, then he woudn't stand a chance against Johan.

It's like Johan.... it takes you into the darkest regions of human nature, but shines like the sun. Singing towards the sacred, but grieving in the profane. Dark and twisted, but beautiful nonetheless.
