  • There was a time in Korea when every household had at least a few pieces of onggi and as many as several dozens. Onggi which has the longest history among Korean ceramics was widely used but became gradually replaced with plastic and stainless-steel containers and bowls. Bonghwang Village in Chilyang-myeon, Gangjin-gun, Jeollanam-do Province is still famous for making this special type of pottery.
Let’s watch the process of making onggi and learn about the patience and devotion it takes to make onggi and keep the tradition alive.
    - Jeong Yun-seok, a master of onggijang (National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 96)
    - Jeong Yeong-gyun, who has completed the training in onggijang (National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 96)
“Dojagi” is a term that combines “dogi (ceramic)” and “jagi (porcelain).” Ceramic pottery is made into the desired shape by a dogijang using potter’s clay and fired in a pottery kiln, while porcelain is made with kaolin by sagijang in a porcelain kiln. Onggi belongs to the category of ceramic pottery, and onggijang refers to an artisan who specializes in making dok and hangari, which are traditional Korean jars.
