- The new Media Player in Windows 11 now has the ability to rip music CDs which it didn't have when it first came out. Now you can use the built software to rip your CDs but you only have the option to create AAC, FAC, FLAC, ALAC now MP3 files with a recent update. You can also still use the original legacy Windows Media Player in Windows to RIP CDs if needed for now.
You can read the writeup of the process on our website.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. I've searched for over an hour, why the most simple solution doesn't show up first, I don't know why. 1000 Thumbs Up, brother!!
NOTICE: The mp3 format has now been added, as of September of 2023. I'm still disappointed the format of WAV is still not available, though. Microsoft clearly wants people to use FLAC, because FLAC is both "Lossless" and "Compressed," whereas WAV is just "Lossless." But, WAV is used in far more players, so there may be a need for some people to use WAV. I really think Microsoft should add the WAV format.
Short, sweet, to the point...thanks for the help and not dragging it out for like 10 minutes!
Thank you! I've been looking for days to try and find the "rip" option. Perfect.
I'm doing my CD collection right now (3.19.24) on Windows11 and Version 11.2401.2.0 has an MP3 selection! WOOT! 😁
The "Rip CD" does not show in my version of Media Player.
Do you have a CD in the drive? I don't think it will show up if you don't. You can also try this app.

yours is the best instruction on this, thanks
Thank you So much for kind explain..
Thank you very much.
No mp3 and does not access the internet for the music description. I’ll stick with the legacy version.
Right! I think this MEDIA PLAYER is more trouble than it's worth. I'm with you sticking with the legacy version! Windows has a good thing and they want to screw it up every time.
I have version 11.2211.36.0 of media player. Mine does not look the same as yours
I just looked at my version and it's the same as yours. What looks different?
good video and as already stated MP3 is an option but when I add the location of music vs audio book vs whatever I can't tell it which folder to put it in and it doesn't know the difference between audio cd and ripped audio book or different locations based on my library set up. I also no longer have the legacy version of media player which I would love to go back to.
You can still use the Windows Media Player legacy app in Windows 11.

Thank you very much for this.
I hardly even use W11 unless I service a machine running it -- mainly because, despite a couple of years to refine it, W10 remains superior in every way. Some people ask me to change their W11 machines to W10.
Recently the W11 Media Player turned up on one of my W10 machines and deleted WMP 12.
The W11 Media program seems less untidy than WMP but does less and gives an air of indifference on the part of Microsoft. Gone are the days of laptop and desktop 'media centers' using earlier iterations of WMP as M'soft became ever more business orientated and swerved away from both enjoyment and education.
This disdain will cause the steep decline of Windows use to worsen, while Apple improves its sonics even on very small devices. Some Linux distros also serve music and video well and they are mostly free.
Lately I serviced a 2 year old Surface Pro and happened to have a new one for a customer to hand. The disdain for sound is worsening despite the ludicrous prices now being demanded just to open a hatch and replace the SSD. I have subscribed and look forward to seeing your other work.
You can even use the classic Media Player in Windows 11.

I put a cd in and it ripped it. When finished, I searched for one of the songs that was on it but in "Search Results " it said nothing matched the search. Consequently I cannot play the song so what has happened to it or where has it gone? I wish I'd never bought a Windows 11 computer.
MY VERSION (11?) Doesn't show these options, I updated all apps but wont show the facilities needed. Scared to uninstall/reinstall in case all music album covers go too. Got my music backed up in a separate folder.
Here are some other free options to rip CDs.

0:43 - They already have MP3 along with WAV
I am unable to find a way to rip a CD in Windows 11 using the new Media Player, that used to be Groove. I don't see any tabs for Rip CD. However, I was able to load the CD in my drive, go to File Explorer and right-click the CD then select Play. This opened up the old Windows Media Player (Legacy). I didn't find a menu but I pressed CTL-M and the old interface opened up. Unlike the one that is in Windows 7 (which cannot connect to the music DB) this version resolves the album information.
Its hard to say what the problem could be without seeing it but I know the rip option won't show up unless you have a CD in the drive. You can try this software as an alternative in Windows 11.

@@OnlineComputerTips I see the problem. In the old Windows Media Player the rip function is on the same page as the music library, which was the default page when the app opened. Now, rip is on a different selection (in the left side column) but the app still defaults to the music library and, like you said, the CD icon appears only if there is a CD in the drive. Thanks for your help and video 🙂
Hi,
Im trying to install Media Player from the App store on Windows 10. When installed, there is no option to rip CD. How do I get the latest version?
It should already be installed on your computer. If you don't have a CD in the drive, you may not have a rip option. You can also use the classic Medial Player in Windows 11.
ruclips.net/video/KRbKMvs0_hU/видео.html
I don't have the three bars on the left so can't access the Rip features at all
If you can see the menu names, then you won't have the 3 bars since they are only used to expand the names associated with the icons. You also won't see Audio CD unless you have a CD in the drive.
@@OnlineComputerTips I spent more time than was reasonable trying to make sense of this Media Player. It was rubbish before and it's rubbish now, you'd think after all this time and having all those technicians Microsoft would have got it right by now. Same for the ubiquitous Windows Ink, which was surely designed to harass Photoshop users. To sort the CD ripping I downloaded EZ CD and got the job done effortlessly, to sort Windows Ink I disabled it as I do with all new Windows installations. Have to say, I'm finding Windows 11 far less user friendly than its predecessors. No surprise there!
@@michaeldodds2722I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR BEING BRUTALLY HONEST HERE ABOUT WMP AND ALL CD RIPPERS BEING RUBBISH.
**GREAT JOB!!**
Is there no .wav format to rip?
There is on my Lenovo laptop, although I use the Windows media player legacy
How do you create an exact 1:1 copy of the original Audio CD? It seems this solution compresses Audio files to a lower quality first.
If you are wanting to copy a CD to another CD, there are many apps you can use to do that such as this one.
ruclips.net/video/1-popnWRyYk/видео.html
exact audio copy
A bit harder to do on a laptop that doesn’t have a disc drive.
And they don’t seem to make laptops with cd drives anymore….
I don't have an audio cd section. windows 11 latest version media player.
It might not show up unless you have a CD in the drive.
@@OnlineComputerTips I read that somewhere below in the comments so I put a cd in the drive but it didn't help so I used another program.
@@gordonwilloughby8793 You might want to try this program too.
ruclips.net/video/7ZBHJP6v-9M/видео.html
odd. MP3 is indeed an option for me. Maybe MS added the feature?
Yes it was added with an update.
I don't have the "Audio CD" option in the menu on the left))
If you don't have a CD in the drive, I don't think it shows up.
@@OnlineComputerTips Thanks! I did but it had a problem; when I put in another CD it did show up. Silly me. Thanks again
I wish you had included more information for idiots (like me) . Like what is the implication of using a different format. And how you copy to a flash drive or other “thing” to share. As if you were speaking to someone’s mother. My old sister has my father’s voice on tape and we would love to share it with all our siblings.
PS: And that new info about Flac and Wav is even more confusing!
There are many devices that can convert audio from a cassette to MP3 files you can save on your computer, assuming you meant cassette tape and not VHS. There are VHS converters as well.

Great! Except that I can't actually set where the file rips to. You can add a location of media files but it won't rip to that location! What??? I had to do a search of the main drive to find out where it ripped to. It's like they assigned some college intern to design this. Mine does allow MP3. It is obvious there are many iterations to this "app", none of which is an improvement from what I had on previous versions of windows.
You might want to try one of these alternatives.

It's only for Dev Channel. I cannot on my version, the newest.
I have the rip option on a Windows 11 22621.963 retail build. You need to have a music CD in the drive for it to show up.
@@OnlineComputerTips And it does rip to .mp3 (Version 11.2210.33.0).
It is horrible to have to come back to this video to help with the abhorrent unintuitive Windows Media Player.
No mp3 and no metadata lookup? Super wack
