    Coolest thing ever, my tiger barbs surround my turtle at night and clean off his shed. First day with the barbs had the turtle swimming after them, but it only took a few hours for him to realize he can't catch them. During the first night I noticed the tiger barbs surrounding his legs, arms, and neck while he's in his sleeping position (sometimes when I come observe he wakes up and they're right in front of his face, but he doesn't seem interested in them at all), and this happens every night now, and the amount of shedding skin that I need to clean out has fallen to none at all. Best investment I've ever made for my turtle tank.

    Great video! I had great success with my eastern painted with mbuna because there were rocks and they can dwell but just an fyi for anyone reading this, as the turtle matures and gains size and more instinct it may be a matter of time before it becomes inevitable they will be picking off fish. The fish in my experience will be prone to disease from stress. It can be done though with the right size tank and even rock dwellers where your turtle will not knock over small decorations.

    • @SGBeardedAquarist
      @SGBeardedAquarist  4 года назад

      It's possible but convicts are likely to harass the tetras. If you have a big tank then the harassment might be minimized but still be prepared (eapecially if the convicts are male or there are many or you have a breeding pair in there). If its a small tank then the neons are likely to be continually harassed and may die from stress.

    Great video! Thank you so much for it! I found it because I was thinking of adopting an RES to add to my tank. What do you think about an Oscar with the turtle, assuming the turtle is large enough to not fit in the Oscar's mouth?

    • @SGBeardedAquarist
      @SGBeardedAquarist  3 года назад +1

      Definitely possible - seen it done before. That said, I would place it as high risk both ways. Small likelihood that the Oscar attacks the turtle and considerable likelihood that the turtle attacks the oscar (cause it's not a very active or fast swimmer). So unless the turtle is one of those super mild ones that doesnt chase any fish at all, success really hinges on the turtle being interested in the Oscar and the oscar defending itself enough for the turtle to learn it's not food. Worth the try if it's a new oscar you have no attachment to. Wouldnt risk it if it's an oscar you dont want to lose.

    I was looking to add a turtle to my 55 gallon tank that right now has 2 full grown blood parrots. They certainly are a pair have had them for 6 years now. They no longer lay eggs so I’m thinking they may not mind something else in the tank now. I’m interested in hearing what you might say about that!

    • @SGBeardedAquarist
      @SGBeardedAquarist  3 года назад +1

      It's doable. Something you really want to consider is how sentimental are your blood parrots to you? Are they pets you have grown an attachment to? If so, i wouldn't recommend it as there's always a risk and although adding the turtle after the fish usually increases chances of success, i wouldn't recommend for such cases because unlike adding new fish where you can simply see the loss as "food" or circle of life, it might not be worth it for fish you've had for awhile. But of course this is your decision to make.
      From a feasibility standpoint, definitely possible.

      This fish keeper made a video about fish compatibility with turtles.
      The best fish to keep with turtles are those that...
      1. Have short fins and can dart quickly, rather than those with long, flowing fins.
      2. Are active. Fish that spend a lot of their time resting are not good choices.
      3. Are intelligent enough to dart away from the turtle, rather than only trying to escape when attacked.
      It's up to you to provide the last two necessities...
      Shelter - It must not only be present but dense. Decorations not only shelter the fish but also provide a more interesting scape. The more bored the turtle is, the more time it will spend chasing the fish.
      Space - A turtle that's not cramped in its aquarium will spend more time away from the fish.
      It also provide the fish somewhere else to go when the turtle is in one spot.
      Rainbowfish would probably work if the tank is very large and well-sheltered. Keep in mind also that if the turtle is a RES that the older it gets, the less aggressively predatory it will be (although it will always be a threat).

    Could a large bullfrog survive in a 900-gallon pool with a red-eared slider, and if so, what would be the conditions?

      Yeap. This usually happens within the first 24hrs. Fish that survive the first 24 hours usually do fine 95% of the time. Barbs and cichlids in general are a good fish to keep with turtles. Barbs because of their activity level and cichlids because of their aggression and intelligence. This is a generalization, may vary on the species.

    I bought some tiger barbs to go with my turtles but end up half of them are eaten in 3 days. I should suggest not to get the albino tiger barbs which are orange/red in colour which the turtle will think it’s prawn for them

      For me, its always depended on the turtle specie. Aggression and the want to eat fish varies from specie to specie. I always opt for a South Asian terrapins as they are generally more docile
