We live in Central Vermont, (Zone 4, Barre,) and I cut all the tall, top branches off in the late Fall and just protect 6-8 inches what is left with a thick pile of leaves. In the Spring, when it’s safe to uncover, the remaining cuts of branches are still a nice, healthy green color. 😊
Here in Ottawa my DA roses usually die all the way back to ground or few inches above and they are not cane-hardy as advertised by DA. However, they grow back with vengeance and flowering beautifully forming nice shrub. The idea is to plant them few inches deeper and I don’t bother to protect them during winter.
Hi Fadi, I do agree with planting grafted roses 2” below ground to ensure the grafted area is protected in ground. I believe most roses come with instructions to plant 2-3” deeper…which was what I also did at the time of planting. Many of my DA roses had cane dieback after our last harsh winter. We were so lucky from the year before where I had no cane dieback at all. I do agree about DA roses come if back full and happy even with all the cane dieback. They are starting to bloom for me today so enjoy 😊
@@TracysHomeGarden Thanks Tracy. This winter was harsh even some of the hardy roses had cane dieback. You are right , last year was an exception and wasn’t really cold. Happy gardening 👩🌾
Thanks for your video - I live in SE Wisconsin zone 5 and last year I had a newly planted DA rose Wisely and did not protect - west side of home, but we did have a mild winter. This year I have another newly planted DA rose Golden Celebration and I think I’ll try and use a rose collar to protect it. Hope all your roses and plants survive the winter this year!❤️
It's good to know. I have few roses last year and unfortunately it died. Definitely will try again this coming spring season. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and wish you have a great evening.
Hey Tracy How are you? david austin roses.. You probably already know that I'm new at planting, I love this!! yes let's cross our fingers!!!! I hope to see them well next year hun, deinitely date us!! Thank you for lovely video Tracy! Learning again :) See you dear!
Thanks for the great tip, also in Ottawa and always looking for ideas on how to save roses, I always seem to lose some after particularly harsh winters.
You’re welcome Kris. Our last winter was harsh & I didn’t protect them and many of my roses had cane dieback to the ground. Moving forward, I will protect with compost to make sure the grafted bunions are protected. Happy gardening! 💚🙏💚
I am also from Ottawa and my roses lost almost all the growth to the point I thought they had died 😢 luckily they came back but now I am afraid about the coming winter
Hi I fairly enjoyed watching your video and I thought that was a very good idea for texting your roses thank you for sharing the video with us that was brilliant😍😍❤❤
I had 2 DA roses last year and did not cover them and they made it and grew new growth and then in April of this year -- a wild spring fall of 5 feet of snow killed them.
Hi Martie, I will definitely be protecting the roses this year because of what happened last year. I want them to come back strong and also DA roses are so rare and difficult to find. Many Nurseries don’t have them on display as customers prepay for them.
Great tips..I should try it.I live in Alberta and my Winnipeg rose is very hardy and has done well for years but my yellow sunshine daydream didnt..hope it stays
hello Tracy, you have a wonderful garden, and I´ve really enjoyed your gardentours and your advices about hydrangea care. Please, do not feel offended when I tell you, that about 2/3 of my DA roses did die back to the ground (or forever) in a not so harsh winter back in 2012, protected with mulch. And I live in zone 7/8 in Germany. Of all my roses they are my greatest love, but they are English divas. Please be aware of that and give them some love and a bed of leafes and a bit of fleece come snow. You will not regret it. Much love and best wishes!Hanni
Hi Hanni, I’m so sorry to hear about your DA roses! Zone 7/8????? I'm shocked to hear this! :-( I believe it has worked for me with mulching is a combination of a good amount of snow cover that we have in our Canadian winter (most of the winter, we get as much as 1 meter or more that remains until spring) + plus the addition of mulch around each rose. Snow is a great insulator. Thank you so much your kind suggestion Hannie! Stay safe & happy gardening!
@@TracysHomeGarden Tracy, you are so right about this, I totally forgot to mention that it had been an early frost that killed or affected my roses back than. And, yes, snow is rare where I live. Thanks again for having me for your wonderful gardentours and helpful advices! Take care and stay safe!Hanni
this is a very good idea thanks Tracy, Would you do the same for new Hydrangea"s this will be my first winter in my Zone 5b and I am a bit concerned how theydo over this coming winter?
Are the hydrangeas panicle or Macrophylla? If they are Macrophylla, then this would be helpful to help protect the blooms on old wood. Panicle hydrangeas don’t need protection as they bloom from new wood. Good luck.
Hi Tracy! Thank you for the gardening tips. I haven’t tried winter protecting my roses yet and your tips are really helpful. Thanks for sharing the video.🤗🌹❤️
All of the roses came back and bloomed but I have a few that came back with just a single branch. One William Morris came back but didn’t show any growth until much later in the season. I came out thinking it was dead and found out it had some tiny growth coming out of the soil surface.

That is a good idea , I have two pots cut open like that.
Give it a try Dessy! 🙏❤️
I love your beautiful Roses....Tracy!!
Say HELLO to your Hydrangeas....Have a good week and good night from my Country.
