One way is you can see quickly that the answer must be a decimal between 0 and 1, so 5^(-2) is the answer, but to solve it really, go from left to right -> (5)/(5)/(5)/(5)=(1/5)/5=1/25=1/(5^2)=5^(-2).

I teach Math Olympiads (prepare really) my 4th--5th grade students for these competitions here in California. I am barely able to understand basic calculus and trig...and that was really when I was in college with a tutor etc... Most kids that are in these competitions are not normal 100 i.q. humans like me (if I'm even that high). What you have to keep in mind is that many of the problems, at least the level of Math Olympiads for 4th through 6th grade, is structured in difficulty from relatively simple and direct to absurdly difficult; divided into a 5 problem competition. This problem would not have a multiple choice (I've never seen a multiple choice in the competition), but it would be the easiest problem; this is straight forward arithmetic. A more typical problem, that is difficult in this situation, is to ask the student to find the pattern and write the answer for 'n' divisions of the expression.
