    I like to think the reason the hunter never went with his rifle for the first fight was because he probably was like “wait they’re only using grenades? Sounds like fun, I’m gonna try that too!”

    New challenge: MEDIEVAL MODE!. The crossbow, hunting axe, templars, rangers with non-plasma katana’s (Tier 3 is unrealistic, chosen katana isn’t), ANYTHING BUT using a gun, grenade, and any modern tech. You get the idea. You may alter the starting roster to be only rangers and templars. Covert ops are allowed. The Shadowkeeper is technically a “old looking” gun. So it is allowed! May the melee lords have mercy on your soul.

      I'd argue only basic explosive grenades and incendiary grenades ought to be allowed for it, modding the basic grenade into blackpowder bombs and firebombs into ceramic jars with burning oil.

      If you can. You'd probably pick remote detonation.
      And bring utility items to detect those dang Lids.
      Although you might need a utility rule for Lost. Possibly only secondaries against Lost. Because we are not dealing with this stuff. And it would make snipers viable.

    The missions with lost that require you to kill all targets dont require you to kill all the lost. It requires you to kill all enemies that were on the map when the mission started and reinforcements (not the respawning lost) So there can be 1 enemy lost in the corner of the map at the start and the lost will just keep spawning till you kill him.

    Grenadiers launch the UltraSonic Lure from their launcher, which makes me believe they may be considered grenades by the game. The Lure can already be used to do heavy lifting for you on missions where you don’t have to kill all the Lost, but if you can pair this with Incendiaries you can even handle “kill all enemies” where they do spawn with a bit of clever grenading.

    41:00 The UFO spawned as a part of the story is guaranteed to hit, while the Dark Event UFO has a 50/50 chance.

    I think the reason as to why mines didn't trigger was because greanade launcher's bonus to the explosion radius only affects the radius in which it deals damage but not it's trigger radius.

    Thing about Proximity Mines, they aren't used as traps as you'd expect because (as you discovered) it leaves too much up to chance.
    However, they allow for an old exploit that people used before Firaxis patched it out.
    See, you can actually deploy Proximity Mines on Player Phase whilst Concealed and maintain Concealment after using them. This allows you to drop a Proximity Mine on top of an inactive pod of enemies. On Enemy Phase, they will move and detonate the Mine, causing them to Scramble and waste their turn, also triggering Ambush Overwatch shots (no Aim penalty) and then allowing you to engage with a full roster next Player Phase.
    People used to do this by allowing their troops to be discovered on Enemy Phase (which would trigger Scrambles), but Firaxis gave the enemy an opportunity to take flanking shots instead, making the strategy very risky (though the introduction of SPARKs made it much less so). Proximity Mines recreate that exploit without leaving soldiers exposed, making them a PRIORITY research for most playthroughs.
    You can also pair them with Claymores if you're feeling particularly destructive.

    The time lapses with Christmas music were hilarious! It would have been utter hell, but you could have probably defeated a Blast Shielded Chosen by piling on the damage-over-time grenades.

    Honestly find EMP grenades extremely useful since late missions have so many Codexes, and they get one shot that way without shananigans.

    As someone who almost never uses grenades past conventional weapons, this video was a good fix for my explosions in XCOM 2 for a lifetime.
    Also, have a challenge run suggestion for you for the new year: Can You Beat XCOM 2 War of the Chosen Using Only Sergeants in Combat? Thought it’d be interesting as it’s just before any class gets its defining abilities, but still a high enough rank to get the job done. Having soldiers of higher rank is allowed, so you can still hunt the Chosen, get Squad Size II, and get all the GTS abilities. I’ve tried the run myself although haven’t finished it, would love to see you have a crack at it!

    I think the Andromeda might of glitched somehow due to their robotic form when you kill their alien self being a robot, and thus immune to being disoriented, so maybe the game got confused on the alive andromeda before it became a mech? Or maybe they are supposed to just be immune but the game doesn't tell you or something
    Either way, definitely agree with the reload, the overwatch couldve always been a hit, but that grenade use was really the big stinker there

      It's not glitched, the Acid Bomb is actually one of their _normal_ attacks. It's not a special ability.

    To kill the Hunter with explosion immunity, you could theoretically just spam frost bombs to stun lock them and use dot weapons (gas bomb, acid bomb, incendiary grenade) to *very slowly* whittle them away.

    you know, even gate crasher would have been a potential RNG fest in vanilla under this challenge, if the pods split before you could drop grenades on them. six enemies and four grenades isn't a great matchup, nevermind everything that comes after. and outright impossible on legend difficulty, since that has a third pod.

      TBF, I did the math, if you had six incendiary and six EMP grenades, with six grenadiers, you could theoretically beat the final mission of the game if grenades had only a single extra charge. Of course that would mean in the final chamber you can only attack the avatars.

    First thing I though about the challenge was "that's gonna be easy as hek" but then I remembered that grenade immunity on the chosen is a perk and that would be an issue. Gonna require incendiary to deal the DoT or smth.

    I've been binge watching these playthroughs and I had a thought as to why the Andromedon was able to use its Acid Bomb while Disoriented.
    The Enviro suit is what allows the unit to use the ability, rather than it being the pilot's own ability. And because the enviro suit is considered a mechanical unit, it can't be disoriented, even if the pilot can be.
    In other words, Andromedons can use their abilities while disoriented because all they realistically have to do is input a command to the suit, which takes care of the operation. The pilot itself isn't performing the action, the suit is. The reason they lose the ability to Acid Bomb when the pilot dies is because, well, the pilot is dead and can't input the command.
    It's kind of lame in terms of gameplay to allow it to do this without conveying that information to the player, but it makes sense from a mechanical perspective.

    Man watching these challange runs is so fun. A small idea I had at the back of my head would be a playable Aliens only run or Sectoid/Viper/Muton/Andromedon only run. I played the mod recently and it's pretty fun to play with Aliens. Hitting Advent with it's own forces.

    Challenges like this are fun because they can bring further appreciation to otherwise ignored or forgotten mechanics and items! Lots of the unique grenades are very cool and useful, but people usually forget all of them except for the Frost Bomb, and maybe sometimes the Acid Grenade. It's just a shame you got the Gas and Incendiary Grenades so late, as they're very strong earlier in the game, and having those sort of 'denial zones' of AoE/DoT effects to place can be extremely useful. And of course, violently stacking Gas, Fire, and Acid all in a big puddle where the enemies have to walk through can be hilarious. Only issue tends to be that Gas and Fire grenades don't effect robotic enemies consistently, (Kinda hard to poison a robot and all that) which makes those grenades fall off somewhat later on.

    So, regarding the Base Defense mission: Yes, it is a campaign unique mission that can only trigger once per playthrough.
    The existence of the Dark Event UFO is to trigger a potentially difficult mission prior to when you'd otherwise be prepared for it, basically removing the player's ability to dictate when the mission takes place.
    If you've already done the Base defense mission, UFOs can be safely disregarded and the ADVENT Turret Research Project is effectively useless (unless the unlocked room is staffed, which then reduces the odds of Chosen Sabotage missions succeeding, so yeah, effectively worthless). Unless they deploy Turrets on the Avenger Assault Chosen Missions, I typically don't allow them to get that far.

    When one of the soldiers dies, all of his/hers granades have to go off in a cumulative blast wiping the entire map in a fiery mushroom of glory!

    Can you beat XCOM 2 with vipers only? Allowed mods are allies unknown vipers of course, as well as amy mods that are required for it to run. I also suggest using the Torque squadmate mod, since she will actually spawn in your barracks at the start of the game, and I think she's playable during Gatecrasher. Of course, if you do decide to get that mod, and you have no other viper squadmates, Torque will be the only viper you can use until you are able to get more. I recommend mods that allow you to knock out and capture stunned/unconscious enemies and recruit them, such as interrogation and recruit mod (viper add on of course).
    The Viper King squadmate mod is also available for this challenge, but in order to get him as a squadmate, you got to knock him out and capture him and later recruit him through the interrogation and recruitment mod.
    In a world where humanity is essentially non-existent, it is up to the sneks to reclaim the Earth as their own from the Elders.

    Kaboom? yes drifter Kaboom. Edit: as a person learning programming i love the fact that you modded stuff in the mods you use though making them yourself is a lot harder, can say that from my experience making games myself.

    Thanks, Drifter for the countless hours of entertainment and education about X-Coms mechanics.
    But I have a small suggestion for you: I noticed a very low, inconsistent rumble on the audio of your videos. First of all, a plop killer in front of your mic is a great little helper, if you don't already use one. Secondly, a little low cut / high pass would prevent all of the rumble. Used at maybe 55 or 60 Hertz it should not impede the sound of your voice at all, but could clean up your low end nicely. Other than that your audio is fine.

    i think it would be funny to do a challenge where you can only attack enemies that are adjacent to you. that way you could make as many 'close range' jokes as you wanted to and would also be an interesting challenge imo.

      Isn't that pretty much a melee only challenge?
      After all, most of the range weapons will still have an 80% accuracy at point blank, so you'd be better off with swords...

      @@riccardocalosso5688 melee and shotguns would certainly be ideal for the challenge since you're gonna be on the alien's face anyways. But i like the thought of a reaper running up next to a sectopod from out of concealment in order to banish it to death. also it wouldn't write off things like grenadier shredding or psi-op abilities

    Blast Padding itself isn’t so bad but it’s unlocked along with Shredder which is just infinitely more useful than it.

    I also have an idea for in case if one of the chosen having explosive immunity, try gas, acid, and fire bombs, it doesn't say they would be immune to that, in theory

    You're justified in that reload for the tower mission. Dispite all the BS and rage it is to miss shots for example, you were given the % and you rolled it. Fair.
    but for a known mechanic to not work on a single enemy due to a dev forgetting to code it in, is not being upfront, its a rug pull.

    Can I beat XCOM 2 with only SHIVs
    There is a mod on the steam workshop which adds 2 kinds of shivs, these are built from the proving grounds like cheaper sparks.
    The scout ones are versatile, able to use any primary weapon and are speedy but not bulky. They also only cost about 75 supplies last time I Checked
    Alloy SHIVs can either use a sniper or their own version of the grenadier cannon, they provide cover like sparks and if you want to shield something, surround it with these heavy bois. They are also still cheaper than sparks
    Their one downside is lack of secondary weapon and they behave more like sparks than they do in Enemy Unknown
    You will need a rookie to do skulljack and blacksite vial but otherwise it should be doable.

    20:00 he's desperately trying to capture a soldier. ive only seen it happen twice but with the warlock, I believe it works like a ufo event and always happen atleast once but they'll garentee try to take a soldier in one of their early encounters

    Okay I'll agree with the reload against the Andromedon because that certainly seemed like a glitch as if it's supposed to be immune to the disoriented effects then it should not have the status apply and just say immune

    For the UFOs, I think it depends where you are in the story. I've had the first be evaded, but I tend to take forever to get into the actual story, so that may be why.

    The firebomb academy appears to have some new big names in it.
    If not changing explosive immunity, would you have to rely on poison, venom, and/or fire DoT to get them down?

    Wondering in a "Psionic Habilides" Only run. Tho would be similar to the Templars and Psi operatives run... But use of weapons and 'nades aren't allowed, only the Purple Habilities

    In enemy within I never used proxs with mec for mines.....
    Just used as a secondary grenade pouch.
    Cuz as you said sometimes they would not trigger. So just use em as a secondary grenade launcher.

    The only ones doing a challenge run here is ADVENT; _"Can you survive a game against a deranged lunatic with more grenades than we have soldiers?"_
    The Andromedon can use the Acid Bomb when disoriented because it's _not_ a special ability like the others, that's one of its _normal_ attack. Just like with the Solace Mess-Up, the game's playing by the rules.

      @@TheDriftersBroadcast Don't know if it has a cooldown or not (since they almost never use Acid Bomb anyway), but it is still a normal attack rather than a special ability.

    My favorite part of this is that walls and obstacles mean literally nothing. On the missions you need to blow up an alien facility, it would be fun to see the entire building wiped out before placing the charges.

    I love that you had to mod a mod, and all this modification nesting doll of explosions, and blast padding's utility is greatly boosted to "barely-acceptable-but-i'd-rather-have-shredder" status.
