I've always enjoyed this song, as for the slightly off key parts I could not care less, this is Rock N Roll after all and imperfection is fine and can actually add to the organic nuance and feel. In my opinion this is a good song, I've seen many criticisms of it before but I think it is fun, hooky and has good momentum and levity. thanks for the lesson!

I love this song and the album. When you listen to Mike describe how the song was made and produced you would expect to hear a half hearted mashed up throw away fill in song but for me it’s still a great song and that’s the magic of what the Beatles can do with their songs.

I watched this video when it was released. Also, I seldomly comment on RUclips videos, but this video made me leave a comment. I want to thank you wholeheartedly, Mike, for clarifying that it was George who did that busy guitar part on this song. I watched a couple of tutorial videos regarding this song, and guess what. All of them said that it was John who did that busy part! I believed that one. And yes, thank you for breaking the myth I believed in! :)
P.S.: 'Hold Me Tight' is one of my favorite songs by The Beatles! A great rocker. 😎Certainly not old enough to know these smaller details (I'm 15, by the way). However, I'm glad to know there are people like you! I enjoyed watching this video. :) I want to learn this someday. :) Hopefully, you're doing well, Mike! ❤

Love the history info. Nothing like a Gretsch around the C position. We forget how the bass sound was in the 60s, nothing like hearing a T60 , Vox Foundation or Selmer Goliath giving it what for in songs like Kansas City, standing outside the Cavern it sounded like all you wanted to be was the bass player. Nice to see the zero fret.

How does Mike know all this stuff? I mean what guitars they used, amps they plugged into, and who did what! This is a treasure trove of Beatles info! I wish he was around when I was younger. I would buy these books at the music store but they seemed to be on piano. Then my old turntable would spin a bit slow sometimes making the song seem to be in a different key. Humbling to realize I had a lot of these songs wrong although we got through them.

Sympathy John, back in the day I would spend a long time trying to tune my Strat copy with a pitch pipe only to find the turntable would run a bit slower on the outside of the record and a bit faster towards the middle - never really in tune!

As a ten year old listening to Meet The Beatles in March of 1964, it was this song that most caught my ear, (followed by Don't Bother Me). I had been a guitar student for a matter of weeks and I seem to recall it was this tune that provided the impetus to learn to play the daunting F chord! I guess the appeal of the song was its energy- the clapping, foot stomping drive it had. I still like the song- likely largely based on fond memories. It wasn't the best song on the LP, but everyone likes what they like, even if the songwriter thinks little of it. Clearly not Paul's favorite- as he said- it was a work song- something to take up album space. I don't think it's ever made his post Beatle concert playlists. But who wouldn't have loved being in the Cavern- hearing the Beatles play it?

A short note - many years ago, me and my two friends got to record some songs at a studio, and one of my friends insisted we do Hold Me Tight. It came out nice though - I played a a nice digital bass part throughout and did a little singing!

I really enjoy these detailed evaluations and demos by Mike Pachelli. This one is no exception, enjoyable. I might add far more enjoyable that the Beatles recording of this song. I was drawn to this video because I always have had "Hold Me Tight" as my #1 song on my personal list of all time worst Beatles songs. As Mike alludes to, a lot of the disappointment in this song is probably related to production issues. The tune has potential and I have heard some live versions by others that were pretty decent, but the Beatles recording of this is pretty sub-par. I agree with John Lennon on this one.

Man, that Rickenbacker sounds like garbage! It's like a damn toy guitar (w/that tiny neck. Heh!) My first student guitar in 1977 had more balls. And man, the whole "leaning out of tune" bit had me cackling. What was John smoking. To have any serious interest in using a Rickenbacker just seems like clinical insanity.
No matter, it worked. And it's all part of the Beatles tapestry of delight.
Mike, you're awesome. Thanks for all the fantastic instructional videos! Great vocals too. 😎
Your "I AM THE WALRUS" clip is still my favorite. Brilliant break down of utter genius. Not ironically, my favorite Beatles song too.

This is the first of your videos I've stumbled upon! I'm a guitar player, played this song in several bands, since 1964 when we first heard it. You are amazing! I love all the history and details! I have always known the Beatles recorded it in the key of E, (and Paul and John both considered it an album filler, neither never really liked it) and (George Martin?) or someone pushed the recording up to "F". I would never attempt to play it in "F"! But, you do! I'm impressed!
Now.. at 17:36, you provide us with an amazing compilation of you playing all the instruments.
My big question: (having never seen any of your other videos which must be outstanding!), DO YOU REALLY PLAY the Hofner Bass LEFT HANDED??? Or do you play a right hand bass, and flop the video for us to make it look like you play it left handed, just like Paul? If you do play it leftie, I'm blown away!

There is a short snippet of the original Please Please Me version on one of the sessions bootleg. It almost sounds like the song There's a place. It has the same drum beat and it's not as heavy as the version that was released on With/Meet The Beatles. Story has it that they used the same reel of tape to record the new version over the old one, wiping the old one in the process, as they claim that it was done to save on tape cost. A fresh reel of tape is a small price to pay in exchange for having the old version available.

CJ - It really depends on the sound I'm looking for. Mostly for Beatles I use a Neumann U87 (I have 4 of them) - I also like the Neumann U47 and TLM 103 and a Sontronics Delta (ribbon mic) but, the preamp and compressor makes A LOT of difference. I have a number of them, Telefunken V72, La Chapelle 992, Toft EC-1, DBX 286A, ART PRO MPA II, ART PRO MPA, Empiracle Labs Distressor, Universal Audio 1176, Daking 91579, etc. etc. Oh yeah - I did do a video on an inexpensive U87 clone. see:

Is George’s lead guitar here a template for ‘Drive my car’. I wonder? Very similar I thought

Fantastic! Are you really playing left handed bass or is it a photo flip? If you are, WOW! If you're not, WOW, too! You are an amazing musician.

Thanks and the bass is flipped in editing. I feel it sacrilegious to see a McCartney bass part played right handed.

For some reason I like this track. I qued it up like ten times last night and danced in the kitchen.😂

Hey man I love the channel, I'm a huge beatles fan! Have you thought of breaking down "In Spite of all the Danger"? Or "Like Dreamers Do"?

It always impresses me that you play the guitars right handed but the bass left handed!!!!😮
