Vader doesn’t ask Han any questions because that’s not the point of torturing him. Han’s pain and later Leia and Chewie’s heartbreak is what Luke senses while training on Dagobah. Vader knew that Luke would sense his friends pain across time and space, which is why he does what he does at Bespin.

I must say that I love this movie even more now after editing it than I did when I reacted to it. It's really hard to be as reflective as I would like after only watching it once. However, after watching over and over while editing, I'm so much more in love with the storytelling, the character development, the pacing, and overall world building of this movie. The set, the lighting, the costumes, and the music bring this universe together in such a beautiful way. I truly came to care for all the characters, and there were many moments that made me reflect even days after watching it.
Also, if anyone is curious, I will be reacting to these movies in release order. Thanks ❤

My mom saw this at the show when it 1st came out, & she knew what the dream meant.
It meant Vader is related to Luke, but in what way ?
Cause Luke never saw what his father's face looked like.
George Lucas was deep in Story Telling 🎞🎞

Kahla, you mentioned the swamp setting on Dagobah, there’s a documentary that shows how they built that set, it’s very interesting if you ever get a chance to see it. It’s hard to believe that it’s all built on a soundstage.
The outside shots on Hoth were actually shot on location in Norway, so yeah it was freezing. The battlefield shots were shot _ON_ a glacier!

@@troiler3 That's partly correct but not the entire answer. I waited in line for 3 hours to see it when it came out too. Then I saw it another 10 times in the theater, and another 100 or so since then.
It was actually a warning to Luke to beware of the dark side, lest he fall to the same fate as Darth Vader.
      Luke: "I feel death, cold."
Yoda: "That place… is strong with the dark side of the Force. A domain of evil it is. In you must go."
      Luke: "What's in there?"
Yoda: "Only what you take with you."
Yoda: "Your weapons, you will not need them."
Then later Yoda pleading with Luke not to go: "The cave, remember your failure at the cave!"
That whole scene was a test for Luke to see how he handles confronting Vader. He wasn't supposed to kill him.

A lot of people dont understand the cave scene.
    «What's in there? Luke asks.
-Only what you bring with you. Your weapons, you will not need them. Yoda replies.»
Luke chose to bring weapons to a place of evil so he was met with weapons, confronting evil which turned out to be his image.
Had Luke brought no weapons and peace, he would have not become the evil character in the domain of evil.
It was a bit of a clumsy metaphor, but it served as a warning to not become that what he wished to vanquish.

This came out when I was 14 yo and I developed a MASSIVE crush on Harrison Ford because of Han. The "scoundrel" scene made an impression on me as well, I gotta tell you! And then leaving the theatre in complete shock because of what Vader did to him and Luke. Between that film and The Wrath of Khan, Id never been so 'destroyed' by a movie.
ESB truly is a gem because it remains the one of the best SEQUEL films ever to have been made. I loved your reactions and you had me laughing so hard at your reactions to Leia and Yoda. I think if Lucas had paid attention a little more to how women reacted to this film, Return of the Jedi would have been a little different and there wouldnt have been this idea that Star Wars was only for little boys. There was, as you pointed out, so much going on at so many different levels that it drew you in immediately. ANH was astounding for its own time, but ESB made something new as well.
The people who wrote the script for ESB were Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan. Leigh was an exemplary, VERY WELL KNOWN and established sci-fi and screenplay writer who had been around for a long time. She was known for The Big Sleep (who she wrote the script with William Faulkner and a few others) as well as several very well known novels.

    1. Han to Chewy, "Laugh it ups fuzzball"🤣
    2. The scene in the cave is Luke seeing into his future if he were to turn to the dark side.
    3. Do them in the original release. They were put that way for a reason. Jumping ahead ruins it for you and us.
    4. IRL Ford and Fisher were having an affair. She was only 19 and he was much older and married. She put it in her biography before she died. She got an ok from him to put it in there.
    5. Hans', "I know" was ad lib because Ford thought it's what Han would say, and required a new script change to be written in the next movie.
    6. You will learn more about the emperor and Darth Vader in episodes I, II and III.
    7. The next one wraps everything up and IMVHO is the best of the original VI Lucas episodes.

Seeing the Vader reveal was an absolute life changer for me. I still vividly remember, I was six in my Virginia home and begrudgingly watching A New Hope and now Empire, and we get to that moment. And I want to say my jaw was on the floor with that reveal. I turned to my parents and just started babbling "He's lying, right?!!! He's got to be lying!!!!" I couldn't comprehend it
I want to say that was the first time that it ever dawned on me that the good guy could have a connection to the bad guy and that things weren't so black and white. It kind of made me realize just how powerful storytelling could be that it could make that much of an impact on someone.
20 something years later, Star Wars is my favorite franchise and has inspired me to write my own stories (or try to at least; do or do not I guess)

Great reaction :) It was fun to watch!
In the cave scene, when Luke asks "What will I find?", Yoda answers "Only what you take with you". The cave is strong in the Dark Side of the Force and basically it shows Luke a few things:
    1. It shows him what obsesses him (his hatred for Darth Vader)
    2. After he decapitates Vader in his vision, it shows him that lashing out in hatred and anger will turn him into what he hates the most and cause him to fall to the Dark Side
    3. It foreshadows the relation between Luke and Vader.
Regarding Luke's vision, few people realize that the visions themselves were a set up.
Not enough credit is given to Vader's understanding and mastery of the Force. When Luke had a vision of Han and Leia's misfortunes on Bespin, it was the future he saw.
Vader purposefully made Han and Leia suffer, going as far as torturing Han to use them as bait to draw Luke to him. This means he knew, as a Force user, that due to their relationship, their suffering would cause a ripple in the Force that Luke would sense in the past and come to rescue them.
Hence Obi Wan saying "It is you and your abilities the Emperor wants. That's why your friends are made to suffer."
Vader had the mindfulness and understanding of how the Force works to plan actions that would have consequences in the past and shape the present to his designs.
This is also why Obi-Wan and Yoda told him not to go (not play into Vader's hand), and the story proves them right : Luke does not help Leia and the gang at all. They escape all on their own. On the contrary, they end up having to rescue *him*.

What I found fascinating, though, how Vader’s Theme wasn’t written until Empire-but Anakin’s Theme was later written to turn into it-and NOW… A New Hope is … missing that theme…

The history buff in me compares it to the Govt. of Nazi Germany during WW2 telling Companies like Mercedes & Volkswagen what they're going to produce, who their big customer is going to be, what they'll sell product for & what labor they'll use. Say "No, u can't make me" & stand by (for not very long) to see what happens to u. As Obi Wan said in Ep 4, "There are alternatives to fighting."

Star Wars came out when I was 5-1/2 years old, this movie when I was 8-1/2 years old, and Return of the Jedi when I was 11-1/2 years old...... my friends and I knew the entire movie(s) by heart, word for word, and acted them out on the playground every day. Being the tallest of my friends, I was always Darth Vader. The first movie didn't leave any questions unanswered, as George Lucas was never certain it would be successful enough to warrant a sequel. It was this movie which left off on the cliff-hanger..... and it was three years before we got the answers. It was absolutely amazing seeing these movies in the theaters, as there had never been the special effects that were in these movies before. You're watching the CGI enhanced versions of the movies which George Lucas did as he was making the prequels to bring the effects on par with the technology which was available; and he added things in to tie into the prequels; but like many my age, I prefer the original theatrical releases better. I have all the original versions of every movie.
Due to having seen Episodes II & III, you already know the twists ~ but the revelation of Darth Vader being Luke's father in this one (which was the topic of discussion for three long years as to whether or not that was actually true), and then the revelation that Leia was Luke's sister in Return of the Jedi..... I really can't begin to relate to you just how it was growing up with these movies as they were being made. George Lucas also was the creator of the Raiders of the Lost Ark. He was too busy making these films to make Raiders of the Lost Ark, so he turned that project over to his friend Steven Spielberg. The man is just a master storyteller, and a creative genius. Dialogue, not so much. He brought in additional writers after the original Star Wars, and also turned over directing duties, which is why this movie is generally regarded as the best of all the movies.
You're seeing Yoda through the lens of having seen the prequels. When you watch these, you really need to try and see things from the perspective of haven't been seen before. Plus, you saw CGI Yoda. This Yoda was entirely practical effects, being puppeted by Frank Oz who was the puppeteer of Miss Piggy, Fozzi Bear, Bert, Cookie Monster and Grover (among others), working with Jim Henson of the Muppets and Sesame Street fame. In fact, Yoda's voice is quite similar to Grover's.
Yoda was essentially testing Luke which is why he acts the way he does at first, before becoming much more serious as we have come to know him afterwards. He wanted to see how Luke deals with frustration and impatience before developing his abilities further. In that regard, Luke is very much like his father.
And John Williams, well there's not much else to say about him that hasn't already been said. Arguably the greatest composer of our time.

This movie has two of my favorite lines in cinema history.
The first is when yoda looks at Luke an tells him "do or do not, there is no try" my dad would say it to us all the time growing up
Another is when Han is frozen in carbonite and leia tells him "i love you" and Han whos name should just be chad thundercock at this poit says "i know" toatally improvised by the way Harrison Ford felt it was not in Han's charecter to simply say "me to" back lol

This was one of the first times in cinema where a sequel to a hit film was even better than the first. However, at the time, opinions were split on it, as many fans felt like the darkness of the story, and the fact that the heroes fail in this one, was a betrayal of the lighthearted fun of the original Star Wars.
Over the decades, of course, it's come to be seen as the best film in the franchise by most. :)

Hey Kahla, Fun Fact: There was a fake page in the script that Everyone got. Something like the day before shooting the big reveal, George Lucas brought Mark Hamill, David Prowse and James Earl Jones together and told them about the "real" line: It wasn't "No, Obi Wan murdered your father." like the fake script said. Not even the crew on-set knew what was going on. ...And that's how you keep spoilers out of it! :)

I was 7 when Empire came out. My sister worked as assistant manager of a movie theater that summer. When my mom would go shopping, my sister would let me go sit and watch Empire no matter what time it started. I probably saw most of Empire about 20 times that summer.
If you ever get a chance, watch the Robot Chicken Star Wars episodes. How they handle the various Force-choke deaths is brilliant.
It’s petty, but it still upsets me that in the scene after the swamp monster spits R2 out, Luke no longer says “It’s a good thing you don’t taste very good.”

Yeah, it feels like the storylines of Luke/Yoda and Han/Leia respectivly are on different time scales. Sometimes, it is implied in Star Wars that time moves at a different speed when being in intensive touch with the force. But at the time of making this movie, it was probably just convinient for the plot.

"I'm sure the turnover rate [for being an Imperial officer serving under Vader] is very high."
Probably, but I seriously doubt it's as high as working at a Verizon Wireless Customer Support Call Center. 1/3 of my class either quit or were fired before our 6 week training class was over, 90% of those who remained didn't last longer than 7 months, and not a single member or our 35 member class lasted longer than 10 months. 4/5 of us who graduated quit before we could be fired. One of us needed therapy for what the stress of the job was doing to him weeks AFTER he quit. He didn't even have anxiety issues, it was just his first job out of high school.

I love watching peoples' reactions to their first time watching Star Wars, and you'd be surprised how even though "Luke, I am your father" has spread into the popular consciousness just how many people don't realize that Vader said it or which movie in the saga it came from or any of the wider context around it, and how when they _actually_ get to the scene the plot twist still hits like it did in 1980.
Some of them even think that Vader's lying just to get Luke to join him, like James Earl Jones did when he read the line.
I think you're the first person I've watched who saw the prequels first and went in knowing who was who.
As for people saying it "ruined" the moment, it may not have been a shock or a surprise, but I don't think it's possible to "ruin" a great moment in a great movie.
Sure, it hits differently when it's a surprise, but it still hits even when you've seen the movie a dozen times or more too.

  • @ravenmadd3895
    @ravenmadd3895 8 месяцев назад

"LOORRRD, that's the moment. That's the trauma, look at the trauma."
Fun fact about that scene: they wanted that reveal to REALLY be kept under wraps. In the official script, Vader says, "No, Obi-Wan killed your father." Considering how they wanted Mark Hamill to react properly to this reveal, the director Irvine Kirshner came up to him just before filming this scene and said, "Look, I know this, George [Lucas] knows this, James Earl Jones will know this soon when he records the lines, and now you will know this. If ANYONE else finds out, we'll know it was you who talked."
Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford apparently had this little game they liked to play where, if they knew a secret they wanted EVERYONE to know, they would "Tell it to Carrie [Fisher] 'in confidence'." When they finally saw the finished product at its world premiere, Harrison Ford leaned over to Mark Hamill and whispered, "You didn't fucking tell me about that!"

There's debate about it back and forth about it (George Lucas says it was just to build tension, Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) claimed it was specifically to explain Hamill's change in appearance)
