How to Calibrate your Stadiometer

  • Rob from CelebHeights with the perfect method to check a Stadiometer for accuracy and ensure you're measuring your height correctly.
Most stadiometers should be precise, and any error usually occurs due to mismeasurement, bending the rod, not putting the platter section on your head and bending it too much.
However, there will be some height rods that do in fact have an error, so it's worth checking your own device, to ensure it's accurate and that you're not under or over measuring your stature.
Simply find an object of suitable length and with a tape measure record it's length. Then on flat surface with rod perpendicular, measure this object and figure out if the stadiometer is accurate or if there is an error.
In the case of this Seca 213, I found it to be within about 1mm accuracy.

You can do the same trick to check if your wall is perfectly straight. Take a book and measure it with a ruler on a table top, then put it against the wall and measure it with a tape measure. The measurements must be identical.

I measure against the wall in my kitchen with tape measure. It has a tiled floor and it seems pretty accurate. Floor is even except maybe off like a mm or less. I keep measuring around the 185 mark on my wall so just go with that or 184-185 range, or weak 6'1. I say I feel fairly tall walking around in Canada and glad to make it to 6'0+

Hey rob, remember when you told me that i miss measured my height as 5'5, well i happen to be quite shorter than that. I measured my height and i got 5'4.5, and in the morning i am 5'5.5, i measured my height like a hundred times and i am no close to 5'6. I measure my height with a steel tape and i personally think that the steel tape i have isn't accurate. I measured my sister's height with a steel tape and she got about 4'10 but the doctor measured her and she got 5'1. So i am just really wondering whats my real height?

Rob, I think a lot of people hold the headpiece of the stadiometer wrong. I think they push it too hard on one side because of which it gets tilted down a little and under measures them. Btw Rob, what does the stabilizer do?

    Hi Rob
Why this small spacing of 2cm between the back base of the stadiometer and the wall? If, for example, you stick the back base to the wall and shorten the adjuster a little at the top, don't you achieve the same result?
I say this because I have the same stadiometer as you, and I stick the back base to the wall, because if I ever stumble on it inadvertently, I don't have to redo the calculation at the bottom to put it back 😉
On the other hand I calibrated, vertically I am about -0.3 ° (Rather correct) with my GLM80 but it adds 2mm instead of 1mm that you have. And at the 6ft6 level it adds 3mm. It's quite complicated to calibrate it to 0.0° exactly 😳
Thanks to you Rob for reading me. greetings from France 😊👍🏼

Yes, if you shorten the adjuster you could get the base close to the wall.
The Green wall in my videos isn't perfectly straight in certain points, so I do adjust mine slightly to ensure it's as vertical as possible.

Indeed it is annoying when the wall is not as straight as we would like. My wall too, it makes waves. Maybe I should invest in a real spirit level, like the one you had in the January 2018 video "Back to Front". 👍🏼

The little black bar at the top (stabiliser) helps keep it fairly solid, and like I put in the thumbnail to this video, you can move it slightly to make sure the rod is straight.
      Not all walls are straight.

I'd guess 5'11.5"/181.6cm,could end up any height but still definitely more to grow. I'd be surprised if under 5'10 - over 6'0.5

180 is likely based on ur pubertal growth and father’s height, 183+ 6ft) might be possible
